Probably going to be grandfathered into a service run by Crunchyroll.Friend of mine brought up a question about the digital copies. I don't know how those work, but are they still going to work or have they gone bye-bye?

"Funimation isn't gone, the name just changed."
The irony of what was once a piracy site eventually absorbing the biggest US publisher is fucking nuts.Reminder Crunchyroll was a piracy site originally.
lmao
A piracy site till they figured out a way to make more money "legally"Reminder Crunchyroll was a piracy site originally.
lmao
Hopefully it can be avoided based on current trends.Sony?! I'd say it's a matter of time before The Mouse nabs them.
They weren't even that good of a piracy site either back when I still streamed animu like 12+ years ago. I'm kind of amazed they're still allowed to keep that name given they now deal with Japanese studios ran by the sort of people who really don't take kindly to piracy.Reminder Crunchyroll was a piracy site originally.
lmao
Sony owns almost the entire North American anime market besides some shit like token Netflix original anime (most of which suck and no one watches). They also have a big stake in the production too back in Japan. For Sony, it's pretty much a license to print money.Considering they are competing with Hulu, Amazon, and Netflex, I'd give it about three years unless Sony gobbles something else up and shoves Crunchyroll under it between that period.
Sony has Spider-Man's film rights. You know that The Rat will be looking for every opportunity nab them.Hopefully it can be avoided based on current trends.
Or at least postponed for a bit longer.... The last thing The Rat needs is more monopolizing power.![]()
Studio Profit Report: Disney Dives as Sony Soars, Paramount Rises
THR’s annual analysis shows it was a rebound year for the box office and many studio businesses' profits after a big 2020 COVID hit. But higher expenses weighed on some majors as production and marketing spending ramped up.www.hollywoodreporter.com
It really is only a matter of time until they own everything.Sony?! I'd say it's a matter of time before The Mouse nabs them.
Do you like….actually believe this? Monica is still going to get work, nothing is gonna happen to the studio in Texas, crunchyroll outsources like everything, they aren’t going to close down one of the biggest dubbing studios that they actually own for no reason. that’s why a lot of the funimation staff have come out and said they’ve already been working for crunchyroll anime. theres been way more La and Texas crossover in terms of Voice acting since the purchase and covid happened making remote recording a bigger priorityThis still hits me hard, obviously you can say that it serves them right for what they did to Vic and whatever was of value of the company was already gone.
But still... wow, end of an era for sure, they were a cool company once and I still have a lot of affinity for what they were thanks to things like Fullmetal, I mean it's just as well since the brand was irrevocably tarnished but I'm just sad it played out like this.
It's also crazy to think that in December of 2018, when they released that Broly DBZ movie things were still business as usual, now just a little over 3 years later the company is defunct, life fucking hits you fast, I wonder if people like Monica think it was all worth it?
