I'm still weirded out that the entire game is just Midgar.
Like I get it, a "faithful remake" would be fucking enormous but along with the plot alterations they're only going to a handful of locations overall, or shit will speed by so fast it barely matters.
Can't remember if I already said this here or to my brother, but I get the feeling part of the reason they simply stopped at Midgar is because there really isn't that much of a point of going past the city unless you were going to do an honest to god remake (well there were a few other things they did while in the city to consider as well).
I mean, does anyone actually give a crap about what the remake's take on Red XIII's Cosmo Canyon subplot will be? Like how is that subplot necessary anymore when we've already been exposed to the meteor threat (as opposed to the planet just dying because of Mako overuse in the original which I think you can infer here) and also that Red XIII honestly does not matter to the overall plot?
How about the Nibelheim flashback at Calm? Is that necessary anymore since the characters have already confronted Sephiroth, the audience (and Aeris who, like I said before, knows too much) should have some kind of understanding that he presents some kind of threat (perhaps you could argue they may not know the scope of such but that wasn't covered in that flashback anyway so who cares) to people in general, and Hojo, in the remake, has already hinted that Cloud's memories are BS and that he wasn't in Soldier? The answer is no, not really. Certainly not in any particular detail.
What about Gongaga? The only point of going there was just to get fuel for the buggy you get from Golden Saucer which is connected to another subplot that doesn't matter a whole lot in the grand scheme of things. It doesn't help that I doubt we'll be seeing the characters go cross-country in a car. The only other thing of note as far as the story goes is Zack Fair's parents. Whoopdy freaking doo.
Finally there's Barret's Corel subplot which didn't really matter that much in the original. It's just more of a character moment for him. I get it helps show why he hates Shinra and when he did but at this point, why should the audience care anymore? Wasn't what they did to Sector 7 enough for them to understand Shinra is despicable? And just to say, I'm not even opposed to this being in the game at all if say it got converted to a sidequest. As some kind of chapter in the next game though, I just don't get it.
Assuming they still care about treading on the finer points of the main story, the only things that really matter for disk 1's plot are : Rocket Town if only just for the party to get an aircraft which, if you really need that to happen, you could just as well have the characters obtain the airship at Junon, the Temple of the Ancients, Golden Sauncer if only to get that keystone to get to the temple (also Cait Sith who plays a minor role in the temple), and the Forgotten Capital. Everything else really doesn't matter that much.
