The Final Fantasy Thread

It's exactly what bad mystery box writing is, or the kind of writing we saw after Season 5 of Game of Thrones. Twists for their own sake. And then double twists to further trick the audience.
Which is just weird because FF7 has a really good twist and most people don't actually know what it is. (It's not Aeris dying)

You mean, that he's not actually the person that he thinks he is at first? That is a pretty unusual twist for a JRPG. I mean, there are tons of characters who don't know who they are; amnesia is a notoriously overused plot device, after all. But they all know that they don't know who they are. It's rare to have a major character, let alone the protagonist, who's just straight-up delusional.

Neither was playable characters dying. Hek, besides say John Marston and Arthur Morgan, you could still say that.

Hmm. No...Fei from Xenogears shouldn't count as an unreliable narrator. He's got a whole other problem.
Tellah from FF4 and Galuf from FF5 say hi. No wait, they don't because they're dead. Also, Shadow could die in FF6 if you didn't wait for him long enough. Some playable characters from FF2 died too, but I don't remember who because I never got very far in that game before becoming fed up with it. So death of playable characters was not only not new to JRPGs, but wasn't even new to the series.

FF2 had some deaths; Minwu, Ricard, and Josef are all temporary party members that die over the course of the game. Then of course you have Tellah and Galuf.

What separates Aerith's death was that it was a death of a character that seemed like a permanent party member. FF2 and 4 had a revolving door of playable characters based on where you were in the story so most of them ended up feeling expendable anyway, and Galuf's death is somewhat offset by the fact that Krille inherited his stats and abilities. You're certainly right that death wasn't new to the Final Fantasy series or JRPGs in general, it's just that 7 was the first one that made it actually matter.

I'm noticing that Aerith says the word "mosey" quite often. Was nomura trying to depict her as Southern? Because I don't think she said it in the original game or Kingdom hearts.

You kill your playable party members in smt 1 though
Xillia 2 had you murder your whole party as a means to intentionally get the bad ending.

Probably a reference to the shitty English translation of the original game where Cloud says "let's mosey" at the end of the game and everyone makes fun of him for it. If anything, Cloud and Tifa should have southern accents. They're from Nibelheim, which is in the sticks, and Tifa even wears a cowgirl outfit in the flashbacks.

they should give aerith an annoying boston accent

then no one will mind that she dies

Finally beat Remake. Here are a few random thoughts:

The good:
-The characters all have distinct and well-written personalities. Its fun watching them interact with each other.
-The music in this game is great. I cracked up laughing the first time the gangsta rap version of the chocobo theme came on.
-The graphics are beautiful. As I said before, Wall Market is one of the most beautiful environments in any game, period.
-The battle system is fun for the most part. Tifa is super fun to play. Cloud is good. Barret is okay. Aeris makes me want to kill myself.
-90% of the story is pretty solid, straightforward and enjoyable. Characters don't do random dumb shit, but rather all have good motivations for doing what they do.
-I'm glad they did away with the whispers this game so we can have a story unencumbered by such a heavy handed plot device moving forward.

The bad:
-RP walking is a blight on this game. JUST LET ME RUN!
-I hate the chapter set-up because it creates a lot of points of no return. I'm hoping the second game is more open-world because it sucks having to take a three hour break in the middle of the story to complete a bunch of side quests.
-Due to being set in Midgar, the visual language of the game lacks variety. Everything is dark, green and grimy.
-They don't adequately explain who Sephiroth is or why the characters want to stop him.
-They don't adequately explain what the whispers were or Sephiroth's involvement with them.
-You never actually see the characters leave Midgar. They're on the road, there's a fight and *boom* they're all on the ground outside Midgar. Really robbed us of a powerful scene, especially given Aeris's hesitation to leave Midgar.

The ugly:
-The Angel of Slums "reveal" comes about 12 hours and 4 sidequests too late.
-Some achievements can only be earned by replaying long segments of the game and altering your final save state. Because we don't know if we'll be able to carry over our saves to the next game, I'm hesitant to start fucking with shit willy nilly.

Final Rating: 8/10
Agree. Solid 8/10. No huge complaints in terms of gameplay. Combat was satisfying, Materia selection was sufficient. Maybe add a few more summons/enemy skills to learn. The next game needs to be open world though. In terms of the story, while it's nice to see Square shake things up by changing certain plot aspects, the entire concept of the whispers is so fucking stupid. Sephiroth also appears too much throughout compared to the original where he's this looming, ominous force.

I'm not sure how to feel about this part. On the one hand, this is mostly for people who already know who Sephiroth is, and the magic could never be recaptured. On the other hand, well... Yeah, it's pretty over the top and dumb.

I feel like it would have been received better had it been announced as a reimagining from the start. Which I think like one guy said, but Squeenix leaned on the remake angle hardcore. Sequel would probably be more accurate, but the entire premise, dumb as it may be, wouldn't work from that angle.

...What? Do you mean no popular characters, or literally nothing from FF?

I mean, to be fair, when I think of Tactics (any of them), the first thing that comes to mind is the generic class units and not the main/story/hidden characters (and that's despite loving me some Ramza and Mustadio). But you said it's a gatcha, so...that is kinda weird and dumb. Wtf?
