The Final Fantasy Thread

Anyone here ever play Theatrhythm? That was a pretty good pair of games. The arcade version is okay too. And the second game had Chrono Trigger and Dragon Quest music, too!

General Beatrix is best girl in FFIX. Disagree? Fight me.

This is a plothole I think. And always was.

If you're bothered by that, then you should also be annoyed about Cloud's sword coming out of nowhere in the original (oddly enough I noticed a similar thing in the remake where Aeris pulls her staff from out of nowhere) or how after Aeris cinematic death scene, you see her with her ribbon still on.

I kid of course.

Speaking of death scene...I have to admit, I never actually bothered seeing how the other characters reacted to her death. I never would have thought an optional character you get would be so badly shaken by Aeris death.

Can't argue with that.

That's one of the most underrated aspects of the death scene to me; you see how the other characters react to it. It makes the scene more powerful in my opinion, seeing your party go through their own emotions after seeing their friend die. And the fact that Square took the time to give each character a unique reaction gives the scene a kind of replay value, seeing which characters react in what way. I especially like that there's no dialogue, and even the limited animations are able to communicate so much emotion, like Tifa running off with a hand covering her face or Cait Sith slinking off in shame after realizing the comedy act isn't working.

I hope you're ready for the subtlety of the scene to be raped in the reboot sequel when (if lol) they get to it.

Barrett always gets to me in that scene. Just without fail.

I bought XV after having enjoyed the 10 or so hours of piracy and losing the save. Still can't wrangle up a PC copy of 7, and I think after those I'll try 8 and 13.

Steiner and Beatrix hooking up was one of the funniest and most heartwarming parts in the game. And that game had a TON of funny and heartwarming moments.

Fuck, IX was such a great game. Never expected to be as blown away by it as I did when I first played it. Now it's going to be twenty years old. Fuck...
We got lucky that Square backslid into almost making an old-fashioned Final Fantasy game after Final Fantasy VIII. Once Final Fantasy X hit, it was all over.

I would skip 13 and 13-2 and just do Lightning Returns.

Lightning Returns is the only 13 game that's decent and it throws out the story of the previous two games.

12 Zodiac Age is worth trying before you do 13 or 13-2, I've been looking up ways on the biggest way to break 12, 8 can also be easily broken you can get the Ultimate Weapon before the end of the first part of the game and boost up your stats to an insane amount.

You might want to steel yourself for 8. It's not bad (well compared to other installments in the series) especially in the beginning, but it just meanders after disk 2.

PS : Use a guide on that one and make sure you get the refine card and item ability asap. Trust me, it sounds stupid, but it'll make things a lot less tedious in the long run.

PSS : Worry less about leveling/grinding and more about getting cards, items (either to refine or make better weapons), and magic (preferably from items and NOT by drawing).

You can do retarded and awesome things with the card game in VIII.

Like getting people's best weapons on the first disc and Lionheart-ing the Disc 1 boss with huge amounts of damage because CARDS.

Later on you can also basically chain refine stuff.

p.s For free AP bully the robot spider over and over.

Triple Triad was the best FF minigame ever. I'm honestly baffled Square Enix just dropped it after one game and never brought it back or mentioned it again.
They finally brought it back as a subgame in FF14, due to player demand (go to the Gold Saucer to get started). I honestly don't understand why they tried to make Tetra Master from FF9 a big thing instead (there was actually a standalone Tetra Master game on PlayOnline, which was the SE online service that FF11 was on; there were a few other games like Front Mission Online, but they were canceled and never came to the US).

I really want to break FF8 and get all that neat stuff in the first disk, but I have zero patience with Triple Triad. I got sick of doing the game quickly but you have to do a lot of it just to get the really good stuff. A lot of it is my dislike of card games in general but there's also a lot of RNG I'm not fond of (I have bad memories of trying to get that fucking Quistis card for hours).

I also foolishly tried following the obscure Queen of Cards sidequest which was just piled on the tedious bullshit. Honestly, the big reason I don't have a lot of fun with FF8 is precisely because of all the time I wasted doing Triple Triad. If I were to play the game again, I'd probably just ignore the sidequest. Yeah I miss out on all the broken shit but I really don't want to waste more of my life playing Triple Triad.

It's shallow, but that "Raggedy-Ann-and-Andy" art style always bugged the shit out of me. I didn't try any of the games that had it (besides the Theatrhythms, there was a mobile typing game called Final Fantasy World Wide Words).

Steiner's probably one of the best developed characters of Final Fantasy. He never really gets some big dramatic character moment that makes him change his ways, instead he just sorta naturally mellows out and becomes a nicer dude over the course of the game due to the influence of Zidane, his friendship with Vivi, and his budding romance with Beatrix. Speaking of her, it's a shame she couldn't have been the secret party member instead of Quina or hell, even nixed Amarant and let Beatrix join instead.

If there's one thing that's always disappointed me about IX it's that half of the party basically become background characters after about disc 2 or so. Freya especially goes from being pretty talkative and having a decent role in the story to barely existing.
