The Final Fantasy Thread

What would be the best "modern" ps3-ps4 one to get into?
So here's the thing with Dragon Quest. The most recent game is DQ11 which is out on all current systems. And it is really, really good. They totally nailed it.

There are very good remakes of 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 on the DS and 3DS so all of them are very approachable. Dragon Quest 9 was a DS game. 10 was a Japan-only MMO. And then the first three games are pretty easy to find if you develop an interest in the series. And unsurprisingly they are good. But they are noticably older in style and execution.

You can expect a trditional turn-based JRPG experience that plays upon classic series tropes and ideas. The joke is that every Dragon Quest game is more or less the same game every time but they still manage to make it great. You can play any of them and have an excellent time assuming you enjoy the style of gameplay. It is worth knowing that these are long games... especially 7. And there is always a lot of post-game content as well as battles and challenges for nerds that decide to max their level and get all the best equipment.

Given the question you asked, I would start with the newest game which is DQ11. From there you should probably choose between DQ8 or DQ5. 8 is very popular and brought a lot of new fans to the series, plus it is great. 5 is probably the best game in the series but we are talking a difference of inches and not miles between games. My personal favorite is DQ7 because it keeps going and going. But yeah, everything from 4 to 11 is great, you really can't go wrong. The weakest of the bunch is 9 because it is too easy. And unless you speak Moon, you can ignore 10.

We also have a DQ thread on the forum. Remember that DQ is popular because it is traditional. Sometimes you will see people complaining about basic story and predictable archetypes and boring fantasy settings with castles and dragons; those people are missing the point. The game is loved because it still tells a classic sort of story with traditional gameplay and it does those things really, really well.

Here we go, this is the image I was looking for. Of course it was on the first page of the DQ thread and I started on the last page. It is missing newer games but sums up the series pretty well.

How did Divergent Paths go? They have some people at FF6Hacking forums, and there are reviews on RHDN IIRC.
I'm not going to lie, I loved it... but I wouldn't necessarily recommend it for a first playthrough of FF6. I definitely liked it more than the original, but I don't think I would have enjoyed it nearly as much as I did if I hadn't played through the original version first... If you've already beaten FF3/6 though, I would 100% recommend playing through it again with Divergent Paths.
What FF5 hack did you play through?
My opinion of this is almost the exact opposite of what I just said. I never really liked FF5 until I played it with this rom hack (For this one, you have to hack the GBA version). I can't imagine ever playing FF5 again without this hack though. It actually integrates all of the "new" classes much earlier, and makes them actually viable in the game. It does more than that though, read the dude's explanation. It definitely does everything he says it does.

The FF3 Pixel Remaster is actually more fun than I initially gave it credit for. It really is like the NES version, minus the fun exploits like item duping. One of the things I really didn't like about the DS/PSP/PC port of FF3 is how much it altered the functionality of various jobs. Granted, the jobs that were buffed were substantially better than in the NES version (i.e. Geomancer, Thief, Dragoon), but that came at the cost of completely and utterly nerfing the Sage which was my favourite class in the NES version.

I still prefer the PC version based on the DS/PSP version purely because it has autosaves, but I must say: the FF3 Pixel Remaster is honestly worth the money. Too bad I can't say the same about all the others; just stick to the GBA versions.

They'll definitely be able to escalate every Sephiroth fight, but it will be meaningless escalation.
Your assuming he's going to be the final boss though. Jenova really wasn't fleshed out that well in the original, so i expect them to go deeper into what makes it tick.

How easy/hard are they? im the kinda guy that just puts them on the lowest setting to enjoy the story. (Not a big fan of turn based)

Like Genesis, if you happen to even remember him.
Considering that Weiss and Nero already exist and are boss fights, he's probably going to be thrown in somewhere.

Supposedly Zack is probably going to be the next DLC side story and be tied to Vincent which would make Genesis showing up there way more probable. If the DLC missions are just Crisis Core Retold and are to run concurrent with the main campaign they're going to keep stuff segregated.

There are theories out there that Seph will be on your side by the end of it. So we might get a big gay anime redemption instead. Or as much as a shitlord like Seph deserves.
Zach will convince Sephiroth (or an alt dimension version of him before he goes absolutely nuts) that he didn't need a mother anyway and that he's being manipulated by big corpo and Jenova who is either going to mimic Sephiroth or infect Sephiroth from the "main" dimension with orphan nihilism syndrome. Him and Zach will work with Cloud and Co. to kill the time jannies and keep Aeris and the other Avalanche members alive in the main dimension by sacrificing themselves and their alt dimension that shouldn't have existed anyway.

I'm still gonna play it because it'll be cool to see the game reimagined and because the original still holds up on its own as a classic. It's not like they've erased the original or anything. If people think the remake is hot garbage there's a perfectly playable and objectively great original FF7 right there with decades of mods and hacks to make playing it for the 10th time just as awesome as the first.

Square needs to hurry the fuck up though. The PS6 is gonna be announced by the time Nomura finishes rendering the belts and hoods for the costume Zach is going to use to totally hide his true identify from Cloud and Aeris so that they don't know who the mysterious figure helping them is until the end of Part 2 in 2025. And I'll still be waiting for a reason to get a PS5.

I find sane!Sephiroth an infinitely more interesting/tragic character so I would be down for this.

I legit wonder if Genesis will show up. I thought that annoying fucker had some sort of legal dispute due to his likeness??? I could be wrong.

I would say medium difficulty with some harder stuff near the third act. The games can be pretty easy if you grind up a few levels, but even then you'll get smacked around unexpectedly by some story bosses. Endgame and postgame content can be difficult. But it isn't like Etrian Odyssey difficulty.

You will probably want to grind a bit. So if you don't like that your mileage may vary.

No lie, FF3 is the only mainline FF of the first 10 that I never beat. and I hate that I have to make this clarification... but I actually do mean FF3, not FF6. It wasn't even that it got too difficult... I just got really bored. And to be clear, I never played the original, it was always the DS/PSP version (I've tried both. More than once.)

I didn't even make it to that apparently brutal last dungeon, I'd estimate that I got through about a third of the game in total.

Maybe I'll try again soon.

One of the Pixel Remaster's saving graces for FF3 is that it cut out a LOT of the additional story fluff that each of the characters from the DS/PSP port had (i.e. Arc's struggles with cowardice, Refia's daddy issues, Ingus simping for the queen, etc). This means that the entirety of the Floating Continent (i.e. the first 1/2 of the game before the Water Crystal) is much more bearable.

Maybe I'll give it another try when it becomes a price that makes sense for a 30+ year old game on Steam...

Call me a huge faggot (I probably deserve it), but I actually kinda liked the boring character arcs and the added dimension it gave the party in the DS/PSP port as tedious as it was.

I also loved the opening cinematic and new character designs in that version.

YoU oWe Me A pIzZa!
Very late, but since Biggs lived and we never saw Wedge's body, I'm hoping she came through and she finally gives me what was promised. I don't want those to be Cloud's last words to her.

But who am I kidding? Nomura is going to force Aeris upon us as our waifu. If this is how she lives, I'm dreading the upcoming "Lara Croft nude code" monkey paw. She's probably going to be outed as a True and Honest Transwoman, complete with feminine penis if CURRENT YEAR and the past trilogy are any indication.

wut
has ff ever had a trannie?

Not as far as I know. But considering the "Lara Croft nude code" was the other major gaming myth of the 90's on-par with "secret method to save Aeris", the Current Year monkey's paw is probably going to deliver that soon.
