The Final Fantasy Thread

I'm actually enjoying XIII's story/mythos but the gameplay is killing me. I'm terrible at video games, I need the option to grind it out if I'm stuck. I got sick of reconfiguring all my Paradigms every time I switched a party member and after they said "ok lol have the whole sphere grid" I just put it down. And how many times are we going to flash back to the same "omg Serah's a L'Cie everyone frown" filler scene?

Uggghhh, I forgot about those flashbacks. Okay, another point for XIII's detractors; the flashbacks suck. I think they stop when you reach Palumpolum, which is also where Hope stops whining and Fang becomes playable, so it's kind of a massive turning point.

Yeah, having to constantly recreate your paradigms sucks. That and the whole "if your party leader gets KO'd it's game over" are my biggest complaints about the gameplay.

You probably wouldn't like the SMT games then. :P (Well except the DDS games and from what I've read, SMT4)

In most SMT games there's usually a reason why if the party leader gets KO'd the game ends.

My favorite being SMT Nocturne in that the demons in your command really have no incentive to revive you whatsoever. You just manipulate them into helping you or in more extreme cases fuse them into other monstrosities for your own needs.

Generally speaking I don't mind the whole "party leader goes down, game over" thing. And I like it the most when a game justifies why it's the case.

the main character has the Death shadow within him for most of the game. And after it's released the protagonist is the only one capable of stopping Nyx

The thing is, in XIII the party leader changes all the time, it's not like VII/VIII where you have Cloud/Squall leading and then some other people are tagging along. It's more like VI or XII where they don't do much to make any one character the most prominent. It makes even less sense that you can't control the other characters in battle save for their job class, but at least that's not much of a problem because it always feels like the backup characters work faster than the main one.

What really ought to make a Final Fantasy game great is a combination of things. All of which should be high quality: the music, the art, and lively gameplay. It should appeal to all the senses you expect it to, and in most cases it does. It ought to serve as an escape from reality, where you can get lost in a world that you don't belong to. And really, that is what Final Fantasy is all about. This is why I don't compare one reiteration of the series to another, because all these game makers are doing is providing you with a way to escape your dulldrum, everyday world, and have some fucking fun.

So, with that being said, stop bitching about Final Fantasy games. One may not compare to another, but that was never the intent. Christ, even the title alone has some history to it. The reason it was named Final Fantasy in the first place is because Square was convinced that it was the last game they would ever make. But hey, the title carries on to this day. So, take it with a grain of salt, and appreciate it for what it is, because you might not get a new fantasy tomorrow. Hi Victoria!

Each video about Final Fantasy XV I watch, the more I want to leave the series and dedicate myself to Dragon Quest.
Good thing Atlus isn't messing with the Persona main series and Persona 4 Arena's plot isn't bad.

ugh, I can just smell the rails

Well they haven't really mentioned anything related to Persona 5. Which is probably a good thing. As long as it's like P3 and P4 it should be leagues above Final Fantasy at the moment.

And it's coming out later this year (IN JAPAN ONLY FFS). And isn't going to be a massive technology whore like Final Fantasy tries to be.

XIII's Paradigm system would've literally been perfect if you were able to control all of your party members. I say this because the AI (at least for me) was retarded, and apparently didn't know that if I died the game would end.

Oh shit, Barthandalus is about to do a huge attack, better switch to my defense+healing Paradigm! Wait, why aren't the Medics healing me? This is our only shot, I'm a Sentinel, fucking stop healing yourself and save me---... And now I'm dead.

I never really had that problem, my AI was always quick to the draw when it came to healing and buffing. It was usually just bad timing on my behalf.

In regards to party leaders, does anyone else find Lightning to be kinda... Sub-par? Everyone recommends her, but when I try to use her, she gets KO'd so easily. That's why I stick with Snow. The only time I willingly use Lightning is during the final boss, since they're vulnerable to Poison and she's the only character who can learn it.

Lightning is sub-par. I personally use Fang because she has the highest strength stat and that goes great for Commando.

Is Tetra Master satisfying in the way that Triple Triad was? I just beat VIII and I got all the cards, as much of a pain Laguna's was. But I don't think I've seen an IX guide that was like "challenge this plot-specific person for ___ rare card." If it's just random cards with random stats maybe I'll skip it and just play IX to see what the story's about. (When it first came out I got to the part where you're split into two teams on Disc 3, but if VIII is any indication there's no really knowing the plot until the very end.)

I have a few questions for you guys.
Have any of you had a bad introduction to the Final Fantasy series? Like did you dislike the first FF game you played?
Is the first FF game you played your favorite game in the series?

I remember having FF 1 on the family NES when I was kid but I don't remember playing it though so FF 7 was the first FF I remember seeing and playing and I used to watch my older brother play, I know I didn't get far when I ended up playing because I was a young kid and sucked at games. But I played through the whole game a couple of years ago and was surprised by how much of the game I remember from watching my brother play. I watched my brother play 9 so I remember bits and pieces and I played up until the part where Vivi finds all the other black mages on the airship but my disc was scratched and I couldn't go any further than that. I played 10 up until the al-bhed tank fight and I watched my brother play a lot of the game and I remember he loved Blitzball. I played through all of 12 and I know my brother played it but I never saw him play it. I disliked that Vaan was the main character he and Penalo always felt like they were just hanging around while the adults were talking. I had heard that Basch was supposed to be the main character which I would have liked but they changed it to the young blond kid because that's what Japan likes as a hero. I also played through Crisis Core and Dirge of Cerberus and I liked those games for mixing it up from the standard formula.
I don't think I could say that Final Fantasy is my favorite series but I have experienced plenty of enjoyment from these games.

My first game was Final Fantasy IV for the PS1. Played it after I beat the copy of Chrono Trigger that came with it a bazillion times(For those not in the US, over here they bundled the PS1 ports of Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy IV together in a collection known as "Final Fantasy Chronicles). I fell in love with it and it's still my favorite FF game. Technically I got Final Fantasy Legend II for Game Boy before that, but that was just the second SaGa series game renamed outside of Japan in order to sell better and in reality has nothing to do with the final fantasy series as a whole.

My first one was X. Funny story, actually; I wanted Soul Calibur 2, and my aunt said she'd get it for me, but she couldn't find it and got me FFX instead. I'm glad she did. Loved every second of it, except the ending. It's still my fave.

The very first FF1 on rom. I was curious because the only exposure I had to RPGs at the time was Mario RPG and Pokemon.

My first FF was also X.

I don't care what anyone says, that laughing scene in Luca is endearing.
