The Final Fantasy Thread

I recently got Final Fantasy IX on Switch because it's one of my favorite games in the series, and I'm starting to remember why I love that one so much. It's a shame it's not as widely discussed as other games in the series, because it has some of the best writing and characters in the series.

Also I adore the Chocobo Hot and Cold sidequest. It might seriously be my favorite sidequest in Final Fantasy thanks to it being pretty cheap but also addictive as hell.

I really wasn't expecting to love IX as much as I do now when I first played the game. The level of charm, love and care put into it is astounding.

Final Fantasy XIV is offering a free week of game time to lapsed players.

Logged in for the first time in a few years. My only leveled class is totally different and I have no idea what I'm doing. Also, the next quest is a dungeon quest, so either I suck it up and tank it totally clueless or I work on leveling another class.

I started doing the Gold Saucer stuff to get enough GP for the regalia and I actually like the place a lot. Spent a long time yesterday racing chocobos and playing triple triad vs the cpu. LoV is a nice diversion but I just do wolf pup zerg for easy completion of challenge logs.

Recently dug up my psp and power supply, had the gba version of 1 and 2, only halfway through 1 so I finished that, also messed around with the bonus dungeons a little. Seems fun enough but now that I found out gba and psp emulation works even on my sped phone it's kind of a hassle to bring my psp.
Next I'll probably play 3 (the job class one) psp version on my phone. I've tried it twice before, a thousand years ago on an nes emu on a laptop when the translation came out, got to those splitting monsters and gave up, then I got the DS version, got lost where I was in the game during a move when I packed it up for a few months.

I almost played 7 finally, got a pirate copy of the fancy new pc one, but it doesn't support a mouse wtf you lazy cunts coding a new menu isn't that fucking hard.

Does the new PC one still have those damn mouths? The mouths that are just lines are fine (the playstation version had no mouths at all which I prefer) but on a lot of the character models they added these large, circular black gaping voids for mouths, and it looks absolutely ridiculous.

I've been trying to find a good picture example of this for a few minutes to no avail. Needless to say, you'll notice it when you see it. Thankfully there are mods to remove this as I couldn't take the game seriously when a lot of the character models kept flashing those toothless black holes. What were they thinking!?

Not the best example, but all I could come up with on short notice.

I have no idea. As soon as I realized I would have to dick around with cursor keys I dropped it. If I have to use the traditional interface I'll run it on my psp or something.

Yep, video is only 3 weeks old so it should show the current state of the PC version.

Got about a week in on Final Fantasy XIV thanks to the free game time offer for lapsed players.

Stray thoughts:
-Realm Reborn content is virtually unchanged from when I stopped playing mid-Heavensward.
-I spent most of my time leveling a summoner from 1-40. I was expecting Rydia from Final Fantasy II. What I got was a less flavorful warlock from World of Warcraft.
-I also dipped my toe into Machinist and really liked what I saw. If I ever do return to the game, I'll definitely spend more time playing around with Machinist.
-I complained about ability pruning in WoW, but ability bloat is a real problem with the way the hotbar is designed for console. You can have 16 abilities on your hotbar, but you might need to use 20+ abilities during a fight. There probably are workarounds (like macros that automatically string sequential abilities together), but that was a little deeper dive than I wanted to take on a one-week trial.
-FFXV crossover event is neat, and I'm glad its set to level 50. Shame I won't get enough GP to buy the car, because that's a neat mount. (I will say the one thing this game does way better than WoW are the mounts. I cracked up the first time I saw the glove mount that picks you up by the scruff and carries you around like a kitten.)

Just wait until Shadowbringers drops. I'm totally planning on going gunbreaker.

Holy crap, that Regalia mount. 'nuff said.

Also, the Death Claw mount is more hilarious when lalas are involved.

Macros in FFXIV are hot garbage and should not be used in combat (unlike WoW) unless you're looking for a bad time.

I believe (I don't play on console) that you can use a few different combinations to get extra skillbars on the controller layout, to get all the buttons you want/need on there. Depending on your class you can also pear down skills that you aren't likely to use.

Are all of the FFX ports the same? I wanted to give it a shot again but I absolutely hated how they "remastered" the faces on characters.

XV has the best story, world and characters but poorly executed.

Really hate what they did to magic, it's basically glorified grenades. None of the other cool magic class builds are possible since all you can really do is different flavors of physical attacks, and healing involves shotgunning potions constantly.

Grabbed FF7 from the PS store a few days ago. This has been on my mind to try out since half the people I see online rant and rave about it like it's the best thing since sliced bread and a lot of people grew up on this one. So far the game is very charming. About 5 hours in and at the part where cloud is telling about his past with Sephiroth. Do I get to start wandering the world soon or is there more story to go through first?

Once you get done with the flashback scene (there's an intermission in the middle), you regain access to the world map. It's still fairly linear until much later, however.

I'd figure it'd be a while. I googled playtimes and since the average ones were usually 70 hours (dayum) I'd figure I would be in it for the long haul. Thanks
