i am a long ff fan, i tried ffxiv for a bit and found it to be the best looking MMO (at the time) but I got bored incredibly quickly. i've played wow extensively and can enjoy a good solo grind for achievements and such. is it worth giving ffxiv a shot again? i've been in the mood for something like it and with the new content and all that, seems like it might be enjoyable.

Honestly? Probably not.

Depending on the FFXIV version you tried, most of what bored you is likely still around and will still bore you. It has a really large time commitment to the story and generally speaking everything is much slower than World of Warcraft.

If you're into the story, it's fucking pretty good man, but if you bounced off it because of how long the story is or how the combat felt, it will take a while for those to pick up for you compared to WoW.

All of that said, FFXIV has a free trial that goes until level 35 (not time gated, so you can try it now and keep it going forever) and will give you a pretty large, and free, taste of what FFXIV is these days.

Haven't played Dissidia since the original version but Tifa got announced for NT if anyone plays that.
Also has anyone tried out the re-translation mod for 7? Was thinking about doing another playthrough and was curious if its worth it or if its just fluff that doesn't really matter at this point. I know that some of the oddities that came from the translation got pulled into canon so it may not really matter but still.

I wish I could find an FFXIV free company that wasn't full of trannies so I could raid. *sigh*

troonsanity is everywhere, but i'm not sure what the moderation in ffxiv is like. i think i recall brianna wu getting assmad over "bullying" and ragequitting, so that's a positive sign.

just join a raid or something with voice chat and say nigger repeatedly until you're banned, for science

Is the game really that infested? I plan on raiding either as a melee dps or tank and I’d hope to avoid troon insanity.

I meet more gays than troons, the last healer I had was the most typical gay man you can probably think of except maybe tone down the sex talk but keep all the sass. Not to say they don't exist, but I mean every video game has them to some extent at this point. I don't run into troons that much, but I probably pug less than most people so that might be it. FCs are functionally useless unless you care about hardcore raiding and want crafter support (which only really matters the first few weeks), if you just want to raid and clear you can just hope into Discords and get recruited through subreddits or party finder.

The penultimate problem with FFXIV is the beginning is so much worse than the rest. Most jobs don't quite click until 50, which if you join a preferred server you get super boosted to those levels super fast. I met someone who was near HW's level cap by the time he reached HW itself. The story drags, and after keeping someone company through the first 3rd of it (as of now) it is a lot of filler and all the cool stuff you can rewatch at your leisure or just watch a plot retelling on youtube or something. Only maybe 1/10th of it is really worth watching the first time through and the other several hours of filler is just not worth it unless you really like fluff and bits of lore. If you don't story skip to Heavensward, I suggest loosely paying attention to the filler dialogue in the overworld, watch the actual cutscenes for the most part they're not too fillery, and you'll be fine to understanding what is going on.

Gameplay wise it improves over time, though not WoW speed to my knowledge but it isn't terribly slow like the pre 50 stages feel, and the story really picks up by a lot. The fight design in general improves across the board. So how you want to approach these issues is up to you. I personally like FF14 a lot except for some personal issues I had with my favorite job, but that is changing in Shadowbringers so I can't really fairly apply that opinion in a few days. Story wise it is arguably the best FF story in years from what I've seen from long time fans, Heavensward especially is really good.

Moderation wise, it is the usual stuff don't be overly mean by saying mean words you'd freely say on the farms. Though you can choose to not play someone for "difference in play style" aka if they're bad as fuck you can freely walk away as mods don't want to deal with that shit as long as you're not a prick about it. If you just do shit over Discord, mods as far as I know don't care, they only care about what people do IN-GAME outside doesn't matter even if you show them video footage it doesn't matter. Their needs to be an in-game trail to your actions or they'll just tell you to fuck off. As far as I know, I can a bit of a dick in chat and openly call people bad, and I never got a warning in my 5 years of playing.

I don't understand why people love the newest FF. Its basically N'Sync meets Forza. Stupid. Boring sausagefest.

It made me miss Lightning. Seriously.

What’s everyone’s favorite 14 job for each category ala. melee, tank, ranged, caster? I’m in the post nonskippable cutscene ARR content and I’m having a bit of a character crisis. I leveled so far as monk but the positionals are starting to irritate me.

I've mostly played Dark Knight, Paladin, and White Mage extensively so my experience is limited across all jobs, I've been a career tank since ARR so I'll say tank. I quite like Red Mage so far, it is pretty simple overall, but the mana management is fun in 4 mans to get your melee combo ready for the boss without overcapping I'm not 70 with it though.

If you hate positionals, but like melee Ninja I think is good. It has 3 main positionals across 2 combo finishers and an ogcd, it has been a valued jobs since its release so you won't struggle to get recruited because you've stated that you want to raid in 14, it has a good skill ceiling to my knowledge and it is fairly active with a similar speed as Monk so you shouldn't get bored with playing it most likely. If you REALLY hate positionals, you can try Samurai which only has 2 and it level 50 out of the gate very straight forward melee that is get even more straight forward with Shadowbringers. Dragoon has a good amount of positionals, not as much as Monk, and they're semi rng so I wouldn't suggest that if you hate positionals.

I was thinking about Ninja initially, but I don’t like being that dependent on party buffs to earn my keep. Monk seemed like a good middle ground. Good damage, some utility. I’m trying to just get to Dark Knight with Monk but holy fucking shit is the Realm Reborn shit long, and it’s worth noting that I don’t have chakra attacks yet and the job is getting some good stuff in the xpac.

Disclaimer: None of this sperging matters if all you want to do is "just clear", it is only if you want to be competitive does anything beyond being a good X matter. The only time class choice really mattered was 3.0/HW release because of how stupidly overtuned Gordias was in early prog and how shit some jobs were on release that they were barely usable or completely useless compared to their peers. Keep all of that in mind, I'm just providing this to you for your knowledge and understanding. The tl;dr is Ninja can very well earn its keep if you're good enough.

If you want to play Ninja, I 100% encourage you to do so, in fact just play any job you want and you'll clear content, this game is a lot better balanced then some people would have you believe. If you want a different more middle of the road, Dragoon is your pick good utility good damage, it is getting a lot of changes that will shake up its place in the game so it is hard for me to talk about it.
Ninja is exceptionally powerful if you even remotely coordinate and who knows how it'll be in Shadowbringers on a personal damage scale, Ninja's weakness in pugs is pugs don't know how Trick attack works a lot of the time or the Ninja has no idea how to use it properly even then Ninja is ALWAYS wanted in pugs for good and bad reasons (bad reason being personal dps padding dick measuring contests).

In a coordinated setting you can talk with your group or make a simple call out like "Trick coming up in 10 seconds -10 seconds later- Trick used". Ninja is always good and is fun to play around with. Do note that Ninja to Dragoon's damage difference from a pure dps perspective isn't THAT wide and in cases can equal or beat out Dragoon who is the other middle of the road with Monk. This variance is pretty common, see this link for an example of the fastest clear of Ultimate Ultima Weapon other speed clears are roughly about this unless something special throws Ninja specifically off which isn't very common: https://www.fflogs.com/reports/gY8BFx2wRyCA1MvW#fight=15&type=damage-done

Of the 7 or 8 FC's I've joined to try to find a dedicated raid group since I picked the game up again have all have had at least a few troons going on about how stunning and brave they are. One even had a group exchanging totally real stories about how they were "sexually harassed" by co-workers and in public.

I main warrior, but I'm finally getting around to leveling ninja as well because I can't into magic classes in MMOs for whatever reason, but I do want to have the option to DPS.

What does leveling a new war class from 0 to par generally feel like, especially as dps comig from tank? I’d imagine it can’t be fun getting xp when you’ve burned all your quests. I’m still not quite sure how much Palace of the Dead gives.

You get an armory bonus that dramatically speeds up leveling for all jobs under level 50/60/70 if you have one job at those levels already. Honestly if anything your first 50/60/70 is the slowest because you don't have armoury bonus imo. Though you're going through the story at a good pace so you don't really feel bored most of that time anyway if you like the story. Also roulettes help A LOT especially as tank because you insta queue into most of them.

Palace of the dead is 100% the best way to get from 1-60 as dps (or anything that isn't insta queueing) it is just tedious, the same for the Stormblood version of Palace called Heaven on High which is for 61-70. When you can just spam floors 51-60 over and over again because at 51-60 you're instantly level 60 with all your skills unlocked (if you're a job and not a class). I got a level an hour as Red Mage give or take about 30 minutes going from 50-60.

The worst level to relevel is 60-61, but a few roulettes fixes that fairly easily just palace is nerfed dramatically at level 60 and you can't use Heaven on High until 61+. If you preordered shadowbringers you have an earrings to boosts your exp from 1-70 by 30% which will also help you.

None of the Final Fantasy games have aged all that well. Square is an awful, preposterous company that's made more dumb decisions than any other major player I can think of, but nothing seems to sink 'em.

The FFVII remake trailers look fine, but the last Final Fantasy game I played that wasn't a port which had any challenge at all was FFX. FFX had an extremely dumb story, I think due to the necessity of fitting the game around whatever was contained in the cutscenes, no matter how preposterous. But at least the game itself required actual strategy.

FFXV wasn't embarrassing at any point in the story, but it was a complete joke as far as gameplay's concerned. The fishing minigame was infinitely more engaging than any battle in the entire campaign, including the one where you fight a sea-serpent the size of a skyscraper, and there's no option to actually up the difficulty. I died once playing it, and that was just to see if dying was possible.

Not every game needs to be as hard as Dark Souls. But a game where there's absolutely no chance of failure on the main campaign has no reason to exist.

Plus, I've seen scant evidence that anybody at Square actually remembers the personalities the characters are supposed to have. Even FFVII horrendous translation (and it was every bit as bad as Tactics original translation) wasn't enough to sink how great the cast was. If they can't get the characters right, it'll be worse than even fucking up the gameplay.

Excuse me, but what...dafuq.

FFX had an extremely dumb story

It was nowhere near that dumb not compared to FF7 at times though I do have problems with FFX's story mostly because it doesn't really make any sense (like a number of Final Fantasies).

I do, however, agree most Final Fantasies have no real challenge, but it's difficult to make an RPG challenging (well besides Souls games but even there you can always grind to win).

You mean like the cup-noodle product placement?

That wouldn't crack the top 50 most embarrassing thing in FFX.

There's a bit in FFX where you crash through a lake of ice and wake up in a desert, which only happened because the next cutscene had an airship blow up a base in a desert.

Nothing at the gay bar in FFVII was that preposterous.

Grinding takes actual skill in the Soulsborne games.

But even in games where it doesn't, every RPG where it's possible to die, and not on purpose, at any point during a first playthrough is already harder than FFXV by a significant margin.

And Namco and Atlus would like a word with you about it being difficult to make a challenging RPG that's not a Soulsborn game. Every Tales or SMT game ever made is harder and more rewarding than FFXV. Even the Pokémon games are harder than FFXV if you turn off the feature that lets you know who your opponent'll throw in next, and those games are made for eight-year-olds.
