The Final Fantasy Thread

Found this piece of news about FFXV. Apparently Hajime Tabata wants the battle system to be simple for people to play.

Tabata added that he intends to make the game’s combat a little simpler, too, boiling it down to “one-button action” where the game automatically knows what you were trying to do, and outputs the appropriate action from Noctis, the game’s protagonist.

...is this fucking satire? Is this Japanese humor? Do Japanese people even have senses of humor?

Personally, I like FFIX and FFVI the most. FFVII was the start of every protagonist becoming an emo crybaby bitch and FFVIII was a stupid love story. Yeah, that's what I like to see when I'm saving the world, some asshole getting it on with some girl with Daddy issues.

Okay, the way it works I saw it broken down on a forum but can't find the post.

The game will use simple controls, yes. But the mechanics seem to be fairly interesting, considering like what I said previously, it runs like the Gambit system from FFXII. For those unfamiliar, the Gambit system is basically your way of setting up strategies prior to beginning a battle. What XV does is basically takes this system, removes all the menus, and makes it more context sensitive. Your available tactics, i.e. what happens when you press a button, are dependent based upon your location on the battlefield, what elements are present, where your enemies are, where your party members are, etc. Basically what you can do is set up in real time as you change where you are in the fight. Yes, there's simple controls, but they're on top of a layer of deep mechanics.

As a programmer, the gambit system was my favorite thing ever. Making it context sensitive seems like a great next step for it. That sounds much better than what the exec said.

I'm actually going through each game in the series (well, at least the ones I own) just about finished with FFV and having a great time going through them again after so many years.

So many long years this game has been in development. Seems almost surreal that it's no longer in perpetual development.

I'm remaining cautiously optimistic for this one. I want it to turn out good, but until we find out whether it is or not...

More FFXV car memes! :D

So, apparently, I just found out from GameFaqs that there's a tiny Easter Egg in Final Fantasy IX's ending:

If you pause at about 30:46, you can actually find Vivi within both the sky and on the castle walls.

Up until now, I have never noticed this and it just makes me love the game even more. :)

Anywho, Merry Christmas everyone!

I think I take your advise. Looking at Google news, sites are now commenting on Siliconera''s article.

Keep in mind, Square-Enix has actually said that they won't release a Final Fantasy VII remake until they've made a game that has surpassed FFVII in quality, reason being that if they did so, it would basically mean the end of the franchise or something.

If this isn't just a rumor, one of several things could be happening. Either they're counting FFXIV: A Realm Reborn as having surpassed FFVII, which had gotten pretty popular, or they're just that confident about how good Final Fantasy XV is or... they're giving up and throwing in the towel, admitting that they have 0 confidence in FFXV, a game that they still need to sell.

I'm going to say that this is probably just a rumor.

To be fair, this was said by Yoichi Wada, who isn't the head of SE anymore.

You know what? That's a good point. Disregard what I said.

Upon further thought, there could be some very good reasons for them to be doing it. First, it basically prints money. Second, a remake was an eventuality anyway, considering the remakes of the previous games, and since they like to have as much of the original dev team present as possible, time is kind of an issue. You don't know how long these guys are willing to stick around after all.

That said, I hope they decide to do a FFVI remake sometime soon too, for the same reasons listed above.

If this does become a thing, it's going to be weird playing the game with Cloud wearing his Advent Children outfit. I hope they keep his original personality.

I think they meant referencing Advent Children as kind of a baseline for his overall physical design. He'll probably just look like his render from the 10th anniversary for FFVII.

While I would really love to actually see a FFVII remake announced, I'm never going to hold my breath for it happening after all these years of rumors.

-Edit-
Welp looks like I was wrong this time. I'm actually really excited for this.

I'm not excited until I hear of what they might do to the game to make it better. Let's not delude ourselves here: The presentation and gameplay of FF7 are fucking ancient now, and adding a few cutscenes and prettier graphics won't do much to hide that.

I hope Square Enix takes this chance to make the world of VII a little more detailed and expansive, be it through additional content, gameplay features or backstory. If they squander the moment by just giving it a visual facelift, I will be sorely disappointed.

But hey, I could be wrong about this. Look at Mario.
