Undertale, Pacifist Ending.

Although I have played many many games, the Aerith death scene didn't make me cry in FF7. It just angered me that I lost my healer and now I had to rely on Yuffie for her Clear Tranquil Limit Break, and Materias obviously.

But the True Pacifist ending to Undertale actually teared me up.

Metal Gear Solid 3. After you kill the Boss and deal with Ocelot on the plane, it's just Big Boss saluting at the grave of the Boss while EVA monologues during the whole scene to Snake in how the Boss was a true patriot and a loyal soldier.

Sorry to bump up an old topic.

Say what you will about Death Stranding, but Cliff's final goodbye to his now-adult son Sam, followed by his death leaves me a sobbing mess every time I see it.

The very first game that did that was Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII. That was maybe 10 years ago and I still can't bring myself to replay the game. Not bad for a foregone conclusion.

The first time a game legitimately made me cry was when I played Red Dead Redemption, and got to the final level of the game.

Watching something that I'd busted my ass to build for a genuinely interesting character break to pieces because of the whims of evil men hurt me on a deep level, as did John's response to the whole situation. I think the point where I actually shed a tear was when at one point, I heard John shout "I did what you wanted!"

If we're talking about like, actually breaking down crying...

Okay, fuck it. I'll powerlevel a bit. My mother died when I was 9. She was a huge fan of Final Fantasy, and she had an old Playstation, and the full sets for FF7, FF8, and FF9, plus Xenogears which was some BALLER SHIT. Anyway, her favorite was by far 8, and even though we had a newer Xbox and PS2, she always kept the PS1 hooked up in the living room so she could unwind and play some after she got back from work. Since she was a teacher, though, she never really had time to get very far, and often she'd end up restarting the game because she'd have gone a month or so without being able to really play because her students weren't meeting the school's standards, or such. My stepdad was a pretty big fan of the games, and he ended up beating all three, but my mom never really got any farther than Disc 2 of FF8.

When I was 19, I saw Final Fantasy 8 on sale on Steam. I bought it . I had just dropped out of college, and I was in the middle of a depressive death spiral, so I was already not in the best space. It took a couple of weeks, but I beat the game.

The moment the credits started rolling, I started crying.

I was pissed because the game took away my Mauser in exchange for the FUCKING SCHOFIELD AGAIN and I could have taken them all out otherwise.

See with the benefit of RDR2 the real tragedy is that John completely forgot how to duel wield between the two games. One bullet for each Fed from two Mausers and the whole problem would have solved itself.

The number of games that made me break out the waterworks can be counted on one hand, which is surprising since I'm a sap whose heartstrings are easily tugged. Technically, The Last of Us was the first to pull it off thanks to the infamous opening scene, but I consider that to be cheating. So I'll talk about my gateway into the Yakuza series instead.

During the events of Yakuza 0, the Dojima Family organizes a manhunt on Kiryu for interrogation (re: torture). He only finds reprieve when his sworn brother, Nishiki, rides to the rescue and tells him to hop on the car, with the intent of taking him far from Kamurocho at the risk of incurring the Dojima Family's wrath. They drive for several hours, until finally Nishiki parks the car in front of a secluded forest. The two exit, and have a smoke together while exchanging some small talk. Then Nishiki points a gun at the back of Kiryu's head...

It wasn't just the excellent performance that broke me down (especially Nishiki's voice actor, who genuinely sounded like he was already losing it even as he tries mustering the resolve to kill his best friend). It was also due to Kiryu's response - he turns around to face his executioner, and makes a final request for Nishiki to take his severed head and use it as a stepping stone to rise the ranks of the yakuza. Kiryu wasn't just daring Nishiki to pull the trigger at that moment; he was using his last words to encourage Nishiki to become top of the clan like he always dreamed of. Ultimately though, Nishiki fails to shoot him, and collapses to the ground in a broken mess as he tearfully admits he's nothing without Kiryu by his side.

Geez, even recounting this is already making my eyes well up again...

No game has ever made me actually cry, but I've gotten choked up and misty-eyed with some games.

Planescape: Torment - Deionarra's sensory stone, meeting her in the Fortress of Regret, Dak'Kon's backstory and crisis of faith, Trias' longing to return to Celestia, Lot of depressing moments in this game.

Final Fantasy X - The Spring scene, Jecht's backstory and decision, Auron pleading with Jecht

Silent Hill 2 - Angela's end

i only found out that the mc died after booting up the answer and the fact he died so humanity could live on being a seal for nyx only made it worse.

The first time a game made me cry was the ending of Mega Man II, with that sad music and the text about how he would never be able to stop fighting.

I was kind of a mess as a young teen.

I've never really been able to get emotionally invested enough in a game to cry, even if I do tear up easily with books and movies.

The only exception was The Last Guardian. Something about that game just turned on the waterworks, I think I cried three times by the end and it's only a 5-10ish hour game.

Tales of Vesperia (when it first came out for 360) near the end of the story when Raven and Karel are talking in Aurnion and Raven starts talking about himself and what he'll do after the final battle. That shit had me bawling since I loved his character so much and hearing the oldest character talk to Karel (the youngest) gives me huge feels.

Runner up is the true final battle in Persona 4 where all of your social links are brought up, and when it goes to Dojima (who I rank up everytime) I fucking lose it.

Metal Gear Solid 3 was the first, that ending and the true story of Boss and how she sacrificed herself just so the government would not be blamed for the terrorists plot. Up until that point in the series Big Boss was always the ultimate evil villain, but in that ending video, you sympathize with him completely, you understand why he did what he did, why he went rogue. It is truly the only amazingly human story Hideo Kojima has ever told, though Sniper Wolf in MGS was also a very tragic tale as well, but you diddnt play as a character trained by her, molded by her, tasked with killing her but still holding out hope that she could be redeemed only for her to attack her to do what she felt was right for a government that just wanted to pretend she never existed at all.

Also Battlefield 3 when
Miller is executed after being taunted with the toy dinosaur his kid sent him. That was not only a tear jerker but one of the most horrific moments I have ever been through in a video game because it was all first person and was way too close to reality since at the time or close to the time the game came out the sand people had just did that to some journalists and/or soldiers over seas, cant quite remember the specifics of it, but it made it hit much harder.
