The General Thread

For some bizarre reason (most likely morbid curiosity), last night I decided to watch the late 1960s Looney Tunes shorts by Seven Arts, featuring characters like Merlin the Magic Mouse and Cool Cat (yes, that is his actual name)

I wasn't expecting it to be good by any means, and I wasn't disappointed in that regard, at least.

It's pretty much what they were, a last ditch, yet swan song effort of a studio past it's prime.

That mouse kicked sand in Cool Cat's face!

Funny thing is, I still prefer the Looney Tunes Cool Cat over Daddy Derek's; he's less pedophilic, after all.
Though he does look like a poor man's Pink Panther.
EDIT: Actually, I just found out today that Cool Cat (the less awful one) showed up in one more Looney Tunes related project (and voiced by Jim Cummings, no less).

Just something I thought was interesting, considering WB usually doesn't acknowledge the existence of the 60s Looney Tunes.

That's pretty much what I thought 30 years ago watching these on Nickelodeon!

That is true. They did bother putting Cool Cat's image on things in the 70's though like restaurant glasses and other merchandise (of course back then the studio didn't really care what they did with these guys for a while).

I've been bored lately and decided to watch a no-commentary walkthrough of Final Fantasy I for YouTube, specifically the original NES version from way back when. I started playing Final Fantasy on the PS2 with VIII and X but I was a casual player at best and never beat either game. It really wasn't until Final Fantasy XV that I became a fan of the series.

While XV is still my favorite, I have to admit that I like the premise and style of the early games, particularly the first one.

They remind me a lot of old-school Dungeons & Dragons, which makes sense, since the first game was essentially an unlicensed video game adaptation of D&D. As a fan of tabletop RPG's, I appreciate the style of Final Fantasy I.

Karma's been smiling down on me for the past few weeks:
  1. I replaced my broken taillight with the help of my uncle (who's a mechanical engineer to boot).
  2. My wisdom tooth extraction (all 4 of them) went a lot better than I expected. I drifted off before they gave me the anesthetic, and only experienced minor jaw pain and bleeding in the days that followed.
  3. I got a cashier job at a restaurant on-campus! It's a good start and another thing that makes me feel more responsible each day.

So yesterday my sister starts panicking that there's a huge problem and she needs help. I thought something happened to the dog because he's old. Nope. It was a praying mantis that got into her room through an open window. it was just climbing the curtain not doing anything. I didn't see what the big dead was. It wasn't anywhere near as huge as she made it out to be either. It was big. But I've seen bigger mantises.

So I got a plastic container and scooped it up. I put an envelope over the container so it couldn't get away and put the poor creature outside where it belongs. No big deal.

All that panic over a bug. They can bite. But I've handled many of them and have never been bitten. And it's not like they are going to swarm you or anything.

I thought it was beautiful. I don't get to see a lot of them. The last one I saw was two years ago.

I can't understand how anyone could conceivably freak out about something as utterly benign and harmless as a praying mantis.

Actual true size of Somalia:

That is terrifying because it's Somalia.

I took a class on Africa (pre-SJW and BLM). And one of the most shocking things was how unbelievably huge Africa was compared to the US. We're utterly dwarfed many times over. Thank God they're too backwards to have the means to invade.

I agree that it's crazy to realize that countries are actually bigger what they are in map size. While niggers ain't invading you through military means, they're invading you with imigration.

There is something charming in the 60s era of cartoons. Maybe they look more "geometric" than the fully fluid predecessors. I dunno. John K approves.

It was an era of compromise and budgets. Television already took over much of people's lives and the theatrical system of cartoon shorts was on the way out. Doesn't help the aging generation of animators who had been at this since the very beginning were already in their 60's and still cranking this stuff out on a daily basis.

Yes. After the movie companies didn't had their cinemas, the expensive theatrical shorts made no sense. Which is sad when I am looking at it from an art perspective, but totally reasonable on the business side of things.

TV cartoons from that era, were really cheap. True, tight budgeting was in place but the old veterans really helped to make the best of that situation. For example, they really did their job well with the design, background and composition. Sure, the animation was lacking.

They give me positive vibes that makes me want to eat some over sugarly cereals...

It has strengths. Often the writing helps too.

I envy you! That was my childhood!
