The thing is the rest of us are kinda sick of our fictional escapism being filled with stuff that we either don't like or actively hate in some cases.
 
The last game that gave me any emotional resonance was Red Dead Redemption. For me that final scene was less about unexpected consequences and more about showing how utterly fruitless the pursuit of revenge can be. Doesn't matter if you shoot that guy 5 times or 500 times, it will never bring John back.

The faggy parts are only a real problem because she's the only known person with immunity yet chooses to stay gay. There have been other successful integrations of gay characters into survival apocalypse fiction because they are not the only ones with the highest chance of survival. If the human race is legitimately endangered, your sexual orientation gets thrown out the window as opposed to wilful extinction. It would be no different against any other hot-topic quandary, and pretending otherwise is pretty egotistical.

Dunno. The world seems to be getting back on its feet in TLOU. It's horrible and tentative, but it's some kind of order. A vaccine or cure would be nice, but the main problem seems to be mushroom zombies, cannibal cults and resource scarcity. Ellie not squeezing out a few kids probably wouldn't make much difference in the grand scheme of things - and there's no guarantee her immunity would pass on to future generations.

You know that expression "gay for pay"? I reckon most lesbians* in a post-apocalyptic scenario would be straight for shelter. Women don't fare well in lawless, desperately poor situations without a man capable of protecting them. Sometimes not even then (see Max Rockatansky's wife, or all those American settlers who were tortured to death by Indians). Ellie would've been murdered by some sick fucks without Joel.

Alternative lifestyles and genderspecials are only viable in a bubble of wealth and safety - probably not that many buttkicking out lesbians in Kabul or Tripoli.

*Except the poor beefy girls with mullets and sideburns, they'd better be good at pulling plow

Yeah it's a massive break in the suspension of disbelief.

It kills any established tone as well, I mean take a look at the new grimdark female empowerment Discworld trailer. It's like someone wanted to put Age of Sigmar on TV.

It's also why I hate The Fountainhead because every few pages there's a new fucking lecture to get through. it kills the flow of everything and stops interesting shit from happening.

They ruined all the watch characters and made them entirely off base because they wanted them to adhere to modern political lines. Sam Vimes has been recast into a dimwit conservative who clings to his religion and weapons because he's scared of anything new or different. Nanny Ogg is now totally cool quirky feminist california grandma who is totally down with socialism and women's rights.

They may or may not have made Death really stupid who needs to be lead around by his granddaughter. Nothing about him has come up yet but the story is based around strong women doing things and all men are idiots.

It really does, whenever you encounter a "current year" moment in a game it reminds you that you're playing a game in "current year" and it snaps you out of the reality of the game's world and back into the reality of a post Gamergate world where developers feel like they have to virtue signal constantly to send the message "We're not like those kind of gamers"

It depends on how desperately you view their situation, I guess. I only assumed the situation is dire because it's an easy motivator for an action game, but if you take it with the notion that the worst has come and gone then by all means there's little point if the rest of society can crawl back from this without her. But given their emphasis on pushing her importance and - if rumours are true - killing off Joel early? I doubt it.

You make a good point that immunity may not be hereditary, however.

It's one of the main reasons I'm tired of AAA Western games. Most games I've liked recently have been either indie games that aren't afraid to do what they want, or Japanese games.

I tried to play both Outer Worlds and Disco Elysium and found their dialogue to be insufferable, not to mention Outer Worlds non-stop virtue signaling got old real fast. The last Western RPG I really liked was Witcher 3...and the next one I'm looking forward to is Cyberpunk.

Honestly, I think it's solely because of the rise of annoying IdPol virtue signalling that the gender and sexuality of the protagonists became a double standard.

Everyone's sick of the culture warriors shitting up pop culture and hobbies at every turn, be they the woke troons at ResetEra or the alt-right skeptics like Sargon and OAG.

It really doesn't help that lesbian protagonists became seen as one of the more flagrantly cliche stereotypes of shorthand vapid virtue signalling and "diversity by tokenism" the quickest of any of the IdPol minorities exalted by the SJW Left.

At this point, lesbian protagonists are seen as a red flag and usually invokes a knee-jerk reaction whether or not the reaction is actually justified.

I don't agree with the fact it's now seen as one of those automatic red flags for so many people either, but thanks to the memetic infamy of Gone Home and pretentious SJW assholes like Gabby Rivera along with media companies cynically exploiting lesbianism as a woke form of fanservice, it's gotten to that point.

At the absolute most, you might've seen a few fedora jokes being made at Sony's expense since the bad guys are your typical Christian traditionalist cultists, which was starting to become a cliche even before "Current Year" and all the culture wars autism started flaring up.

Well, out of curiosity, can you recall a previous moment in video gaming that the media touted as amazing, stupendous, stunning, etc. where a specific instance of a straight couple kissed? One that didn't also allow you to be gay? Bonus points for it being a game's reveal trailer.

I honestly can't think of any, and perhaps that's one of the reasons why people were annoyed; they're not looking for shallow virtue-signalling when looking at a game's preview, they wanted something similar to the original's reveal, where a zombie is stalking them through a dilapidated house, and the mere cocking of the hammer to Joel's revolver was enough to put them in extreme danger - the relentless feeling of tension - which definitely drew in some of the original players. Instead you got two lesbians snogging: hardly a pulse-pounding affair.

To be fair, I thought the thematic progression of the series was Joel in the first game, divided between Ellie/Joel in the second.

Joel dies and Ellie ends up becoming the protector of a little boy in the third...

That seemed to be symmetrical...
 
I was positive Joel was gonna die in the sequel anyway. Hell, I even theorized that he does in the beginning and the Joel you travel with is Ellie’s hallucination, but you don’t realize that until well into the game/near the end.

Imo, there was no way Joel, thematically, was going to live after the decision he made in TLOU...
