Realistically, there's no LGBT in the apocalypse. The world is ending, you need re-population, its just not going to fucking happen. You might fuck people on the side of the same gender, but in general, you're going with who is giving you protection, food, whatever.

Very VERY early on in the development of TLOU, she basically looked identical to Ellen Page, but they changed it out because they didn't want to get sued.

As for Troy Baker- I get celebrities pretending to be their character on social media and at events when it's all in good fun. But he was definitely taking things too seriously when he did that rant, and "I AM JOEL" just comes off as cringe. He could have just as easily said "Well geez guys why not just wait until the game comes out, give it a chance and decide for yourself" and it would have been a thousand percent more palatable and less condescending than the rant and the video.

Troy Baker's been in a lot of things, but as a person I really only remember being kinda turned off by him years back when he was at some awards show (the BAFTAs?) accepting an award on Ashley Johnson's (Ellie's) behalf and he claimed that her winning an award and The Last of Us having such a "strong female character" was a "watershed moment" in gaming history or something, and it just really rubbed me the wrong way because it came off as that feminist posturing about how "Current Year's Female Characters are the only strong female characters that have ever existed, none have existed before today."

It's like an important piece of the puzzle of how the shitty plot came to be. "White male bad" means they must be culled to appease the woke idiots, but to justify it you need to make the character retroactively impossible to like. Expect Joel to be revealed as impossibly evil for no real justification besides his gender and skin color while contradicting his actions in the previous game.

Or you could do what Mad Max did and have the insane bandit gangs hell-bent on fucking other people and taking their shit over have gay members, because those kinds of groups aren't going to prioritize rebuilding society.

I'm sure the woke freaks will smugly assure us that "Oh, all characters are flawed, you're just complaining because your fave has flaws and you don't like it."

It was the same shitty line they used when The Last Jedi came out, and Rian Johnson used Poe and Holdo's conflict as a "Males are so TOXIC to female leaders, he's just a sexist manbaby" metaphor; conveniently ignoring, of course, the (canonical) comic series they did for Poe that established his character and gave literally zero indication that he had any issues working with women or taking orders from a female leader (i.e. Leia). And when people who liked Poe complained that his character was being retconned, we were snidely informed that we were just throwing a tantrum because we were mad that they gave Poe flaws.

And it's like, no, I'm not mad they gave him a "flaw"- I'm mad that Rian Johnson lowkey played him as sexist when Poe is demonstrably not based on the five graphic novels worth of canonical character development for him. Johnson did a hackjob on his character to make a political point, not because he was trying to develop Poe's character.

The thing about Joel supposedly having a "dark secret/past/whatever" is going to go one of two ways: It'll either

A) be a lot of nothingburger to stir up interest and controversy, with him killing or attacking some lady with a decent amount of justification (i.e. not enough to really vilify him for), or

B) have him do something godawful as a shock-tactic that totally retcons his character.

The former will irritate people, the latter will make them not buy the game.

Druckman, from everything I've read in articles about the game and this thread, does not seem to grasp the problem here: There has been enough controversy about this game and what it contains that I think a lot of people are maybe going to slow their roll and wait before purchasing it. I think what'll happen is that a lot of people will purchase the game, play it, and relate the details back to the rest of us. And if those details indicate a shitty game that fucks over Joel, NaughtyDog is going to lose a chunk of sales from disgruntled gamers who are pissed off that they ruined Joel's character for political points.

Whether or not that chunk is significant enough to cause them real problems (financially, I mean) remains to be seen. With Last of Us II being a sequel, your primary audience is going to be people who played the first game (and, you know, probably liked it). If it's as bad as it seems, they really could be creating a problem for themselves in terms of sales and money; in this day and age, with this level of scrutiny going in, word gets around fast. And given the number of people already pissed off at this game, I suspect some will be ready and raring to scream about its flaws the minute they start playing.
