The Legend of Heroes Series - Possibly The Most Underrated JRPG Series

Richard was right about everything and the games go on to prove him right.
The reason these super-fast ships started appearing in Erebonia was because the dumbass Queen decided to sell their one edge, the Arseilles engine, to the empire during the trade deal. Hopefully they don't turn him into some bad Hitler allegory. He's the best "villain" in the series.
Didn't they explain it that they sold the engine because they were told that they'd be invaded otherwise?

Sky SC Liberl News Issue 1:
"According to reports from the Foreign Affairs section, the Erebonian Empire, Calvard Republic, and Liberl Kingdom have all agreed to enter into a treaty of non-aggression. Preparations are already underway to host the signing of the pact following the Royal Parliament's approval of the terms proposed by Queen Alicia."

Sky SC Liberl News Issue 4:
"Samples of the new model engines referred to in our previous article are to be presented to both the Empire and Republic as tokens of the peace represented by this pact. These engines are said to be the key to next-generation flight and such technological exchange is the promise made to those who promise to uphold the harmony between nations. Much is expected from Liberl's ace in negotiations."

It was the Queens idea. And while I hate her and support Richard in every sense, I'll play devils advocate and explain why she did this. Erebonia has this fortress next to Crossbell where they built massive cannons aimed towards the city which sparked an international incident. This is a throwaway like in CS2, so it might be a Coldsteel invention, but apparently Calvard was not happy with the super weapon aimed at what they consider their turf and were looking to team up with Crossbell for an invasion. The Queen realizing this proposed this non-aggression pact just to save lives. This is why Erebonians in the Sky games are so supportive of the whole idea. Alicia is essentially a pacifist giving up her weapons so the 2 bullies don't kill each other.

The writing in the series can be surprisingly smart, sadly it fades in the background of harem plot lines and battle school.

The harem cringe and dumb anime bullshit started as far back as the final act of Azure, which is when that game really started to shit the bed. In favour of smart writing, you now have god-awful exposition dialogue, characters behaving like retards so the plot could happen, memberberries, key-jangling and the flanderisation of returning characters so the doorknob-licking brainlets can clap like trained seals because they saw the thing they remember.

You can just say Azure, Lloyd goes and has a beach episode where he needs to pick which 10/10 bombshell he will put lotion on first.
He also gets a daughter(wife),
Ellie likes him, Tio likes him, Rixia likes him. I'm really not the biggest fan of the Crossbell arc. Even as wish-fulfillment it fails to me because Lloyd himself is such a boring character.

I like Lloyd conceptually, in a setting guilty of everyone being connected to some uber powerful entities, having a normal beat cop going against alchemists, super ninjas and world spanning organisations is pretty cool.

Rean (and virtually the entire cast of Cold Steel) are all mary sue background.

The rivalry between Olivier and Phantom Thief B has me rolling. Currently on chapter 2 trying to figure out the earthquakes. Ngl the description of the dood with shades for a second i thought he was a fed, also Estelle reaction to learning shades exist gave me a chuckle.

Lloyd is just Simon from Gurren Lagann. Like... it's a deliberate reference. Him and Guy have the exact same voice actors as Simon and Kamina.

In-fact, from Zero forward the whole franchise is just one big love letter to mid 2000s robot shows. C and Crow are just Lelouch, there's even a strip club named after him to really drive the point home. The Panzer Soldats are just legally distinct Nightmare Frames. Randy is a wish.com version of Lockon Stratos from Gundam 00, once again, down to having the same voice actor. They even took his catch phrase and gave it to another character. Tio is a reference to Martian Successor Nadesco (which isn't from the mid 2000s, but whatever).

Although I think the Calvard arc tries to do away with all the mecha stuff and make more references to a whole bunch of Tokusatsu franchices. Which I'm not as familiar with. Is there a Kamen Rider autist in the house to regurgitate my observations back to me?

Oh, yeah, the harem thing was always around Lloyd and just only grew and grew.
The tismy writing was what I was referring to when I brought up the ass end of Azure, the whole thing with Mariabell and Ian.

I never thought about it. This means Rean is based on Suzaku, no wonder he is the worst character :story:

What are you talking about? Suzaku is great.
Wanted criminal.webp

As is Rean.

Honestly seeing Estelle cry and break down was heartbreaking. To see the happy cheerful character just break down reminds me how human the characters are in the game. Met Father Kevin, hes goofball but i dig his cheerful personality, still kinda on the fence about him cause hes from the church but he doesnt seem to be a bad guy. That said my game plan in this game will be the same as in the first game, speedrun to get earth wall, chaos brand and clock up ex.
That whole segment is absolutely gut wrenching. One of my fondest moments in the game and one of the defining moments that cemented Estelle as Bestelle for me.

Lloyd is great in that sense. He's just some fucking cop with a chip on his shoulder cause his brother got done dirty. That's it. And though the harem stupidity started with him, he at least got a final resolution to it with a cannon decision which stops his life from being sealed in amber like Rean's cursed to. Though fuck Rean anyway.

Those 2 are some of my favorite characters of the whole series, enjoy them.

Also, as per usual, all of you guys shitting on Kuro just makes me less inclined to play it. I'm going to play the fan translated version and Kuro 2 is 50% off in the Lionhead version which is the one I would get, but my god, I think I'll pass till the next steam sale.

Who's the canon love interest? Personally I would have gone Rixia but she's too good of a waifu for it to be canon.

Also technically Adol's probably the one who started the harem. We just lucked out that Estelle was the first series protagonist and it's rare for them to have an harem unless it's a shoujou or porn.

The obvious one, Elie. I know she's kind of bland, but nice guy Lloyd ending with nice girl Elie tracks. That and she already behaves like Kea's mother anyway. Their chemistry may not be amazing but it does feel like this was what was being aimed for unlike with Rean and Alisa where they completely flubbed that.

This album is pretty S tier.

One fun thing about Cold Steel was not choosing the pairing they pushed so hard.

"No stalker child, today I shall bond with Fie and Laura".

Ah yes, the canon pairing that has the duo say like 10 sentences throughout the latter two games. I actually prefer Rean and Altina, age gap aside, the two actually have a lot of interaction that's not just generic communication.

And they only kind of pushed on CS1. After that they kind of gave up on that.

Altina is for headpats and father daughter dynamics. As a love interest I find it creepy due to how much she learns from Rean, unlike Millium and Jusis which don't generate as much of a primoldial revulsion even though gossip in town is that "the Albareas have a type". I do love the Altina character and think she's one of the highlights of all of CS.

As for the 27 posible options, I have made it no secret I'm an Emma stan. On CS 1 she felt like the actual heroine. I also enjoy the witch subplot in general. She was cursed by "my life only has meaning without Rean" like most characters mind you, but she did always seem to go the extra mile (in CS 4 basically studying forbidden magic to forcefully break the curse and almost got herself killed in the process and in a later scene gave Rean a good night sleep when the curse made him unable to.).

But well, that's the worst thing of the Rean harem, nobody's waifu is getting chosen and nobody is getting catharsis. I'm still amazed they had the audacity of having love interests with huge lore implications (the goddamn ONLY princess currently in the royal line) as well as his fucking students...

Oh right Riser Buddy
Randy is a wish.com version of Lockon Stratos from Gundam 00
Look forward to it. Your bro Neil Dylandy isn't dead, he's just a cop now.

Ive seen that azure is pretty good, cant wait to play it after i finish the trilogy. Saw that the mc is a cop or detective so thats gonna be an interesting approach instead of being a bracer.
