The Outer Worlds - Obsidian's new game, like Borderlands meets Fallout: New Vegas

seriously, since OverWatch when was the last time these american game companies made attractive women? that would be a clear market advantage. I also had a weird plot idea about a coup by the bloodsports union and it causing the corporations a problem because they're too valuable to kill and just so happened to be too powerful for their usual troops to get close to and non-lethally put down.

And thats where the player comes in.

Also really annoyed by the choice of music too, like is it illegal to use songs past the 1980s? we have thousands of indie musicans and soundcloud musicians and instead its the top hits from our parents day.

I remember when the last duke nukem game came out they used some mickey avalon song and thats exactly the sort of song i'd enjoy in a game like this. Especially because of the setting, there's no reason to keep with the theme of "its the 1890s but in space!" when they could easily set it even further in time. imagine everyone using the same slang and dressing like its 2013, you could even have the villians be mitt romney and obama sterrotypes because everyone hates all the politicans from that era. And as long as you don't move beyond that era it becomes more vintage and the problems and allusions seem more out there and become harder to decipher. the same way bioshock was apparently based on the early days of israel.

They just copy and pasted the old one and added a 2 to the title.
I don't really mind as long as they build an actual RPG. Given that the trailer can't go two seconds without trying to sound like Guardians of the Galaxy, I doubt it will be the case.

>FROM THE MAKES OF-

Fuck off. It was cute the first time you did it but now, its just sad.
I'm pretty sure this type of marketing is what ruined the first game for me. I bought into the whole "From the creators of Fallout 1 and New Vegas" hype and once I actually got the game and discovered it wasn't like either of those games at all I was very disappointed. I still don't really think The Outer Worlds is that bad of a game but it really wasn't at all what I thought we were going to get and I ended up not even bothering to finish it.

it really gives me confidence on your game when you spent 40 seconds talking about the old games this company did. how many of those people still work at obsidian, 2?
No one of the old team are left, here is obsidian today. Its full of danger hair lesbians and crazy cat ladies..

Outer Worlds is fine, but fundamentally flawed in ways that shouldn't have happened from a professional design studio. Gear leveling is bad, it suffers from the same issue as Borderlands where the shiny gold ubergun you found at level 5 is worse than vending machine garbage you found at level 7. Enemy variety is meh. The level design is good on the first planet and then drops off a cliff immediately after with obviously rushed work. The writing, something that should have been top priority for a game that billed itself as witty and humorous, was extremely flat for most of the game and inconsistent, especially because the followers are all optional, so the writers seemed at a bit of a loss about what to write for them. None of those are fatal flaws, I had a good time playing the game despite them, but they're so obvious that it's ominous that the game released with them.

What's going to sink OW2 and Avowed is Obsidian's insistence that every character, every conversation, and every piece of dialogue is "quirky" to an unbearable and almost literally painful degree.

Shredded Nerd could make a sequel to his viral millennial writing vid just using recent Obsidian games alone

I know too many people who struggle with registering the fact that Obsidian as a company hasn't been kept in cryostasis, yet also have failed to notice the games they've made after Stick of Truth. Until people realize the truth, it actually will continue to be a working strategy to just repeat "We made New Vegas, we made KOTOR 2!".

A new gameplay trailer for The Outer Worlds 2 released during The Game Awards:
(archive 1) (archive 2)

It is supposed to come out in 2025 for PC, Xbox and PS5.
Just found out about this. Didn't watch the game awards and most people were chattering about witcher 4 / that gay caillou game by naughty dog..
Holy shit. I can't believe Obsidian made a sequel to this.
If Avowed doesn't sink em. This will.

I'm optimistic about the game, both dlc were a step in the right direction, and this looks like they've improved on the limited enemies/models.
That's just the thing, they look like new enemies in the same exact engine. This leads me to believe they might have been part of a cut third DLC, or that the entire game might as well be a standalone DLC pack. That's not really what you want to see when you waited for a game for so long. Fallout New Vegas is technically a stand alone DLC pack, but the devs did a whole lot of heavy lifting to make sure the entire game was overhauled, now nobody even plays the "original" game it's based off of(Fallout 3) without TTW mod that requires New Vegas to function. We could see quite a few improvements here, and I would love to see them, but to me it looks like we will just get Outer Worlds 1.5 instead. We will see.

I do like the new focus on Auntie Cleo instead of Spacer's Choice, they were going to play a larger role in the game according to cut content and they were originally the first faction you met in the vertical slice of the first game(Roseway was the tutorial rather than Emerald Vale). I would love to see more corporations get fleshed out and more new contenders introduced, I definitely liked learning more about them than the overreaching food shortage or Board incompetence.

WOW! It just looks like the first game, but worse!
they didn't show off much but i can't say its worse than the previous entry, the emphasis on weapons doesn't bode well but outside of that nothing too out there.

at least they didn't show off any noticeable quips, the invisible enemies are a nice touch. my biggest gripe is that you know 100% this is all from the intro level. remember how much care they put into the first world.

Even with a proper budget and dev time this looks like derivative slop.

The problem isn't lack of budget it's clearly that all these progressive devs are severely lacking in creativity.
Creativity and vision. Their CEO said that they want to make "good enough" games. They don't aim to create something that will be memorable or have an impact on gaming.

Not to be a graphic stacy, and I know its not out yet, but what the fuck is this supposed to be?

Man the footage looks boring and slow in the worst pays possible. It feels like poorly made cinematic footage.

The XRAY vision mechanic looks like it will get old fast.
I get very different direction vibes from what is shown. Which I don't like at all cause that doesn't seem very good either.

Pretty much looks like the first game with a few bells and whistles. Exactly what I expected, so I can't say I am too excited. I better see that jetpack they advertised in the initial reveal trailer or I will be pissed
Writing doesn't look much better than the first game either. I am already tired of the companion they've shown off, and considering this is likely a tutorial planet, meaning she's this game's equivalent of Parvati, that's not good news either. Just look how Avowed butchered their companions, we will likely see a similar story here too.
BTW, nice job not improving on the cloth physics at all over the last 6 years. Notice how much clipping the companion's mask is doing when she's talking. There is a reason why there is virtually zero cloth physics items seen in the first game past the tutorial planet(cryo suit and pastor's outfit), because they couldn't make it work in the first game either and it made wearing them look ridiculous. Same reason why they likely cut long hair altogether out of the game as well.
