I actually think you're both right. Or rather, there are different sub-groups of pooners with different motivations that respectively fit the profiles you describe.

Some are simply unhappy girls who were molested or raped, or even just traumatized by the sudden onslaught of male sexual attention when they hit puberty, and are obviously trying to alter their appearance and identify out of being a woman as a defense mechanism.

Others are autists who are disconnected from their physical bodies, and possibly their own sexual feelings, because of the 'tism, and become fixated on the idea that liking stories with yaoi bishie boys means they themselves must be yaoi bishie boys, and convinced that not transitioning is why they've always been socially awkward weirdos.

Then there are the crazy-ass cutting-scar-riddled BPD chicks who get mastectomies but otherwise revel in their female anatomy, and sometimes don't even present especially masculine online. These are your clownporn cuntboys, whose motivations I'll admit are a bit of a mystery to me, though I imagine sexual trauma must play a role in at least a significant number of cases.

Then there's the "not even trying" contingent that doesn't get surgery or even make any appreciable attempt to transition, apart from maybe taking testosterone. They change their pronouns to he/him and insist that should be enough for people to recognize them as men. This is presumably just the latest version of "not like the other girls syndrome", and also, along with the clownporn cuntboys, the prime target for "gay" men who go on Grindr to pick up some AFAB boypussy.
