Yes, it was the open world was too ambitious for what the team were able to deliver, but the sequel should have been able to provide an improved version. Listen in to the spergs about what they missed from Sims 2 and presto.
They could have shat out the same content and again made boatloads of money. It is a digital dollhouse, not the Concorde Project.
No half-ass a live-service, that suits then half-way aborted as they saw the growing backlash against such ventures. Their gamble, more by chance than competence, at least saved them there as Sims Fans are still buying this garbage. Most of them are not hard core gamer nerds, and as such relatively easy to please. --> They would have had a lot less bitching on their hand, if they had made sure that the building aspect is flawless and retained the Sims 3 "Create-A-Pattern" Tool. That addition was as stupidly simple as it was genius for how it added a lot for something I initially laughed at
Let them have 1) their swimming pools and 2) the life stages you introduced with S3, 3) also make sure that that dumb family tree half-way works (potential incest and all; do not argue with your tard base on this, just curse them and do it), 4) return the CAP Tool and 5) the open world, preferably less janky than the first time.
They want to build, customise and tell stories (including the ability to gruesomely murder their sims).
Take Sims 3 open world and mix-match from Sims 2 ; set that up on a stable base engine and then put time into good execution of addons/DLC, as you simply save R&D by copying shit from the first games with a modicum of "creative love" from employees who give a shit. Hate or love this franchise, but it would be the height of irony for creatively out of touch suits/managers, to shelve a sequel, that still can make you good money for little effort (save for the right places).
Just skimming the usually forums, these people all sound like people with perpetual Stockholm syndrome, that keep coming back for more. FFS, they will gobble up EA's horrendously priced Item Packs even WITH custom content available. Christ, they patch your game where needed for free!
Most of their consumer base would start sucking EA's dick again with LOLEA again in their favoured position of being able to see how high up they can push the prices with little to no resistance. Wine and Dine your consumers again a little and enjoy as you get to ramrod them all over again, as all before is forgiven and forgotten. Except for us, because we are cynical autists.

You have a pretty solid IP (no risk of having to come up with something from scratch), an accommodating consumer base (that will allow you to fist endlessly them up to elbow provided you are mindful of a particular amount of points) and loads of endlessly rehash-able previous content.
The only risk in the room is setting up a solid technical base, but I would argue that having to deal with one issue is rather reasonable compared to coming up with something entirely new. Big Rainbow on EA actually being able to muster the necessary skill aside from patience
Large scale incompetence Reductive Excel Spreadsheet Analysis and no vision beyond your own sharting range resulting in squandering of such relatively easily exploitable IP's is beyond infuriating to watch.
Bonus Sequel "Innovation": The optional "Haram DLC" to turn their game into the 18+ Second Life tier degeneracy most of the, crave, the whole nine yards of Twitter/Tumblr/Patreon vore, furry, inflation, Littles and whateverthefuck, while making them willingly pay out of the ass for it, as they still complain that it does not contain

Any recommendations for decent mods? I use MCCC just for story progression, I don’t want any weirdness just something to make the game more interesting lol.

I have many.
Arnie farmplace- Basically cottage living but better. Adds the ability to buy land have a tractor and added venues that you can enter without a loading screen its like a mini open world. Also adds different animals like pigs,sheeps and horses the designs for the animals looks kinda crappy but the effort to create it and give gameplay is fun. Theres even a story mode if you wish to follow it.
Caradriel mods-adds events like wedding, elder tea parties gardening event etc.
Chingyu mod- better and more traits
kawaiistacie slice of life- better personality system, phones , health care system, period for your female sims, sickness and etc.
lumpinou mods- has a bunch of everything like a new woohoo system with better pregnancy and cheating in marriages/relationship and drama, more interactions

Theres a new sims 4 kit and why do they keep making cross dressing stuff for the male sims when the average simmer makes heterosexual masculine male and feminine female couple. If you look at the sim gallery its mostly normal couples there. Whos buying these kits? They are always adding unnecassry stuff the majority dont care about like the ability to make trans sims and now in the future pronouns and ignore the things most of us want. I have never seen one trans/ or lgbt sims being created in the gallery or with at least much frequency as normal sims are created. Whats the point?

To add to the discussion about why people still buy those shitty packs instead of getting CC: I refuse to believe it doesn't have at least part to do with influence from big community figures/youtubers. If you check out the "speedbuild" side of youtube, you'll quickly notice all the famous ones own every single DLC because "no CC" is a badge of honor/humblebrag for many people. Then if you wanna download and use their builds and don't own everything, it's a big fucking issue because half the items will disappear and the house will end up looking deformed.
Also like others said, CC is extremely unreliable and unless you regularly check if everything is up to date it can break your game completely. And the amount of content you get with every pack is pathetically miniscule, so our lizard brain looks at the options and goes "there's not enough variety here, I need more" and that's how you end up wasting $900 on Sims DLC.

It’s a lot easier to mod Sims 2 than Sims 4 because Sims 2 is a feature complete experience that hasn’t been updated since 2008, while Sims 4 is still receiving updates and those have a tendency to break things. Sims 4 modding will likely flourish when the game reaches end of life and stops receiving updates, but who the fuck knows if that’ll ever happen since EA is clearly trying to milk this game for as long as is humanly possible.

To be honest, I like the clothes. The tranny sims look weird but I suppose they got the idea from the carnaval of Rio de Janeiro.
Yes, I know some modders got in trouble before when EA found out they were charging for their content. Maybe EA will find out again and tell those bitches to stop.

The Sims 5 is actually in production now, but who knows how long it'll take them to actually release it.
Rumor is they're attempting an MMO/Sims Online type game again, which was what 4 was originally supposed to be- but they scrapped it all and fell short on time, which is why it sucked so much ass on release.
I'm expecting another dumpster fire when it does come out.

Sims 5 will not introduce any positive new features, nor will it bring back any loved and requested features. As with each pack release in TS4, it will be based off and filled with features no one wanted, developed and executed in such a way that no one enjoys, and ultimately does not run or function well.

I bet my left hand it will have an online feature, so players will be able to visit their friends' sims and do things together. Much like Second Life.

Honestly the idea of it is cool, and I used to wish TS3 had this feature (all we got was the SimPort bullshit)- but that's with giving EA credit to not royally, completely fuck it up in every aspect-which they will.
