I honestly only know about American politics from what I read on the Internet but since we all love shitting on leftists I figured we'd get a kick out of this. Also it's trending on Twitter so you know it's important.

NEW YORK — Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a 28-year-old political novice running on a low budget and an unabashedly liberal platform, upset longtime U.S. Rep. Joseph Crowley on Tuesday in the Democratic congressional primary in New York.

The surprise victory by the community organizer in a district that includes parts of the Bronx and Queens came after an energetic, grassroots campaign that mustered more than enough support in a low-turnout race that many had expected to be an easy win for Crowley, a member of the Democratic House leadership.

“The community is ready for a movement of economic and social justice. That is what we tried to deliver,” said Ocasio-Cortez, who has never held elected office and whose candidacy attracted only modest media attention.

She told The Associated Press after her victory that she didn’t have enough money to do polling in the race, but felt in her gut that her message had a chance to connect.

“I live in this community. I organized in this community. I felt the absence of the incumbent. I knew he didn’t have a strong presence,” she said.

Crowley has been in Congress since 1999 and hadn’t faced an opponent in a primary election since 2004, when Ocasio-Cortez was just a teenager. He was considered a candidate to become the next House speaker if Democrats win the majority.

“It’s not about me,” Crowley, 56, told his supporters at a campaign party following his loss. “It’s about America. I want nothing but the best for Ms. Ocasio-Cortez. I want her to be victorious.”

He later played guitar with a band at the election night gathering, and dedicated the first song, Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run,” to Ocasio-Cortez.

Crowley represents New York’s 14th Congressional District, where he is also the leader of the Queens Democratic party.

Ocasio-Cortez was outspent by an 18-1 margin during her race but won the endorsement of some influential groups on the party’s far left, including MoveOn, as well as the actress Cynthia Nixon, who is running for governor. She defeated Crowley by 15 percentage points.

Born in the Bronx to a mother from Puerto Rico and a father who died in 2008, Ocasio-Cortez said she decided to challenge Crowley to push a more progressive stance on economic and other issues.

She attended Boston University, where she earned degrees in economics and international relations, and also spent time working in the office of the late U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy.

After graduating, she returned to the Bronx where she became a community organizer. In the 2016 presidential campaign she worked for U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders.

Among her issues is expanding the Medicare program to people of all ages and abolishing Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. She recently went to Tornillo, Texas, to protest against policies that have separated parents from their children at the southern U.S. border.

Ocasio-Cortez gained some internet attention for a campaign video called “The Courage to Change,” a two-minute spot for which she wrote the script and featured footage from her own home.

Crowley is chair of the House Democratic Caucus, the fourth-highest ranking position in Democratic leadership in that chamber of Congress.

His loss drew the attention of President Donald Trump.

“Wow! Big Trump Hater Congressman Joe Crowley, who many expected was going to take Nancy Pelosi’s place, just LOST his primary election. In other words, he’s out! That is a big one that nobody saw happening. Perhaps he should have been nicer, and more respectful, to his President!” he tweeted.

The Republican candidate for the office, Anthony Pappas, is running unopposed and had no primary. Pappas teaches economics at St. John’s University.

She was a Bernie campaigner, is supported by BLM, and wants to abolish Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. Also this was in a solid-blue Congressional District so you know she's a shoo-in for next Congress.

But hey, we did get to see Trump laugh at Crowley on Twitter.

Jimmy Dore- he;s supposed to be a comedian??
It's not so much that he's not funny because that can be very subjective. It's that he never bothers presenting or framing anything he says as a joke or even to be humorous. I have no idea why he even does live shows or who would go to one.

He is very skilled at ranting and raving about any given subject though

its the audience pandering kind of comedy. like John oliver

What's so fascinating about that video is that they're mostly relating the epiphanies that they've had regarding the socialist grift, but then the last 30 seconds of the rant from that guy in his kitchen is just balls to the wall lunacy and it becomes crystal clear that they've learnt nothing.

I find the weirdest part of dealing with a lot of people like this, across many subjects, is that they'll so clearly identify the major problems with movements associated with leftist thought, complete with getting angry about it and being able to run down this whole laundry list of why they're stupid and self-defeating... and at the last second they slam on the blinders and go "But left good. Only these people bad. Left gooooood."

It's like watching someone stand on the railing of a bridge and rant to an assembled crowd about how suicide is wrong and never the answer and then calmly and deliberately turn around and step off the rail.

She wouldn't know!

It's funny that she used to rail against the establishment then she became the establishment in under two years. Wonder if she has made the hardest turn around in congress.

She's not establishment. Actual, professional politicians learn very early in their career that constituent services is a huge part of getting reelected. Or they have short careers. AOC has no idea what she's doing, especially now that her puppetmasters have left her to her own devices. I am sure she spends very little time on constituent services, and I bet the same is true for her staff, who seem to have been chosen on the basis of ideology rather than competence. AOC has reached the highest point her political career will ever have. This election, or the next, will see her being shown the door. You can get away with a ton of shit when you're in Congress, but not spending time on or with your constituents is the kiss of death. That's what kills you, not stupid publicity stunts. Just everyday things like answering your mail and answering your phone and holding meetings in your district. And she's not doing it.

i don't get the replacement of "illegal immigrants" with "American taxpayers"

do illegals pay taxes anyway?

Only if they want to, so they can heap up evidence that it's good for them to be in this country despite not bothering to use our regular channels for acquiring citizenship.

Admirable. AOC is right

I don't think it matters. 99% of her money is coming from people who can't vote for her and her main opponent has raised enough money to mount a competitive campaign. Alex could always consider using her wealth to pay some of her volunteers but imagine this greedy socialist actually paying for anything she doesn't have to!

Everyone loves Socialism until they have to pay for it

WHO OWNS MICHELLE CARUSO-CABRERA

On Monday, we broke the story that one of Andrew Cuomo's top political operatives, Maggie Moran, is helping Michelle Caruso-Cabrera, a corporate hack Wall Street is running against AOC, to raise money and find staff for the June 23 primary. Moran has been working surreptitiously but the cat is out of the bag now. [Note: Moran doesn't do anything without Cuomo's approval.]

On Wednesday, investigative journalist Lee Fang followed up at The Intercept by exposing Caruso-Cabrera's financial backers-- basically Wall Street titans who AOC has rubbed the wrong way by standing up for working families from her position on the House Financial Services Committee. "Disclosures," wrote Fang, "show that at least two dozen finance industry professionals, including several prominent private equity executives and investment bankers, made early donations to Michelle Caruso-Cabrera, a former CNBC contributor who is challenging Ocasio-Cortez. Caruso-Cabrera was a registered Republican until a few years ago and authored a 2010 book advocating for several conservative positions, including an end to Medicare and Social Security, which she called 'pyramid schemes.'" Fang didn't mention Cuomo or Moran, nor the role of the DCCC, which has forbidden Democratic operatives to work for candidates challenging incumbents-- although they seem to have made an exception for operatives who work against AOC, Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib.

Among the big donors Fang found were major Cuomo backers like Glenn Hutchins, the billionaire co-founder of Silver Lake Partners (who gives to Dems), James Passin of Firebird Capital (who gives mostly to Republicans), Ken Langone, a Cuomo intimate and founder of Home Depot (who has given hundreds of thousands dollars to the NRCC), Bruce Schnitzer of Wand Partners (who gives mostly to Republicans), Steve Holzman Vantis Capital hedge fund manager (who gives mostly to Republicans), Jeffrey Rosen of Lazard (who gives mostly to Democrats), Bradley Seaman, managing partner of Parallel49 Equity (a Mitt Romney donor), scumbag lobbyist and former Dick Cheney staffer Ron Christie (who gives only to Republicans), Doug Cifu, CEO of Virtu Financial (who gives to crooked Democrats), Facundo Bacardi, an heir to the Bacardi fortune (who gives mostly to Republicans), Thaddeus Arroyo, a leading executive at AT&T (who gives to Republicans + Hillary Clinton), and Jeff Kwatinetz, a top entertainment industry promoter, business partner of Ice Cube's, crony of Steve Bannon's, big Mayo Pete donor and old friend of mine.

It's absolutely shocking! People who don't like a politician are donating to her rival! This is absolutely why I say that Socialists don't understand American politics

So you're saying that a whole bunch of people who have no common donation tendencies have all banded together to back AOC's challenger? It's almost like she's a terrible politician who pisses off people on a personal level, from every political stripe and profession and way of life. No, we can't say that openly, let's just say that they're banding together to buy her challenger.

And yet the left insists there is no bias in the mainstream North American media...

That's not the mainstream North American media, it's a fuckin' blog. It's basically from a blogging site that's like tumblr with delusions of grandeur.

I mean you're not wrong, just pointing out that this particular twit is a few profile-listed pronouns and an "autistic-charactername" away from getting involved in shipping wars.
