I honestly only know about American politics from what I read on the Internet but since we all love shitting on leftists I figured we'd get a kick out of this. Also it's trending on Twitter so you know it's important.

NEW YORK — Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a 28-year-old political novice running on a low budget and an unabashedly liberal platform, upset longtime U.S. Rep. Joseph Crowley on Tuesday in the Democratic congressional primary in New York.

The surprise victory by the community organizer in a district that includes parts of the Bronx and Queens came after an energetic, grassroots campaign that mustered more than enough support in a low-turnout race that many had expected to be an easy win for Crowley, a member of the Democratic House leadership.

“The community is ready for a movement of economic and social justice. That is what we tried to deliver,” said Ocasio-Cortez, who has never held elected office and whose candidacy attracted only modest media attention.

She told The Associated Press after her victory that she didn’t have enough money to do polling in the race, but felt in her gut that her message had a chance to connect.

“I live in this community. I organized in this community. I felt the absence of the incumbent. I knew he didn’t have a strong presence,” she said.

Crowley has been in Congress since 1999 and hadn’t faced an opponent in a primary election since 2004, when Ocasio-Cortez was just a teenager. He was considered a candidate to become the next House speaker if Democrats win the majority.

“It’s not about me,” Crowley, 56, told his supporters at a campaign party following his loss. “It’s about America. I want nothing but the best for Ms. Ocasio-Cortez. I want her to be victorious.”

He later played guitar with a band at the election night gathering, and dedicated the first song, Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run,” to Ocasio-Cortez.

Crowley represents New York’s 14th Congressional District, where he is also the leader of the Queens Democratic party.

Ocasio-Cortez was outspent by an 18-1 margin during her race but won the endorsement of some influential groups on the party’s far left, including MoveOn, as well as the actress Cynthia Nixon, who is running for governor. She defeated Crowley by 15 percentage points.

Born in the Bronx to a mother from Puerto Rico and a father who died in 2008, Ocasio-Cortez said she decided to challenge Crowley to push a more progressive stance on economic and other issues.

She attended Boston University, where she earned degrees in economics and international relations, and also spent time working in the office of the late U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy.

After graduating, she returned to the Bronx where she became a community organizer. In the 2016 presidential campaign she worked for U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders.

Among her issues is expanding the Medicare program to people of all ages and abolishing Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. She recently went to Tornillo, Texas, to protest against policies that have separated parents from their children at the southern U.S. border.

Ocasio-Cortez gained some internet attention for a campaign video called “The Courage to Change,” a two-minute spot for which she wrote the script and featured footage from her own home.

Crowley is chair of the House Democratic Caucus, the fourth-highest ranking position in Democratic leadership in that chamber of Congress.

His loss drew the attention of President Donald Trump.

“Wow! Big Trump Hater Congressman Joe Crowley, who many expected was going to take Nancy Pelosi’s place, just LOST his primary election. In other words, he’s out! That is a big one that nobody saw happening. Perhaps he should have been nicer, and more respectful, to his President!” he tweeted.

The Republican candidate for the office, Anthony Pappas, is running unopposed and had no primary. Pappas teaches economics at St. John’s University.

She was a Bernie campaigner, is supported by BLM, and wants to abolish Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. Also this was in a solid-blue Congressional District so you know she's a shoo-in for next Congress.

But hey, we did get to see Trump laugh at Crowley on Twitter.

i don't get the replacement of "illegal immigrants" with "American taxpayers"

do illegals pay taxes anyway?

Only if they can steal an actual citizens SSN, Which happened to a guy I knew. Tried to file his taxes one year and found out from the IRS that he'd somehow already filed in California (What a shock) even though he lived in the fucking Midwest.

Doesn't that have severe repercussions with his taxes, retirement and other things?

A lot of the pro-illegal immigration people count basic aspects of participating in the economy like paying a sales tax as being a "taxpayer" for the purposes of further muddying the discussion around immigration.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., tweeted -- then quickly deleted -- a celebration of the news that U.S. equity markets crashed on Monday, with oil prices turning negative for the first time in history.

The resulting social media flareup highlighted the unprecedented stakes of the current economic crisis heading into the 2020 presidential election, and underscored Republican complaints that their rivals were looking for ways to use the moment for political gain.

"You absolutely love to see it," Ocasio-Cortez, a self-described "democratic socialist" who has pushed to radically restructure the U.S. economy with a "Green New Deal," wrote on Twitter. She was responding to a post which stated: "Oil prices now at 'negative values,' meaning oil producers have to pay people to take it off their hands and store it because when demand plunges (like now), that is less expensive for them than building more storage and/or shutting wells down."

"This along with record low interest rates means it's the right time for a worker-led, mass investment in green infrastructure to save our planet. *cough*," Ocasio-Cortez continued.

As crazy as AOC is, isn't this a net benefit? While it will hurt America as it's an oil producer/exporter now, if they can survive the prices while OPEC can't, isn't this a good thing?

Please correct me if I'm being dumb.

Low oil prices hurt America more than Saudi Arabia, because oil is produced much more cheaply there than here.

I don't understand how illegals are even supposed to get their handout. Either they're getting paid under the table, in which case they're not paying taxes, and the feds don't know where they are anyway. Or they've stolen someone else's Social Security number, in which case, you'd think the money would go to the actual U.S. citizen.

I do think the feds should compensate hospitals who treat illegals who have COVID, but mainly because hospitals shouldn't have to eat the costs of treating them.

I have mixed feelings about illegal immigration, and I tend to think both sides are exceptional on this issue, but surely if illegals are taking it in the shorts because of the lockdowns, they could just, you know, go home. No one's forcing them to stay here.

Heads up yo, that sounds like something one of those exceptional sides would say

Oh well.

"Send them back by force no matter what" is an exceptional idea on the right. The hysterics on the left whenever it's suggested that many illegal immigrants do, in fact, have places they could go other than here are similarly exceptional. If illegal immigrants can't stay here unless they get Trumpbux, then maybe they should leave.

I love to see it happen but not for the same reason. I've been telling people to invest in oil since this all started cause you're going to triple up in a year. Investing in green energy right now would be the stupidest thing theres no money there. Buy low, sell high in commodities that are always of value. Oil is king, any extra cash you have lying around go throw it in crude right now if you can, ???, profit.

That's not the best idea right now. Oil went negative because some speculator got caught out being unable to take physical delivery. (Looks like a side effect of oil storage being full and the usual buyers being unable to pick up the contract at maturity.)

Invest in companies that benefit from rising oil prices, sure, but don't throw cash at oil futures unless you actually know what you're doing.

Well, another day, another deleted tweet

My only question,

Does AOC delete these herself when she starts getting negative ratings her ego can't take?

Or does a handler/other Rep frantically tell her she's fucked up again, and she begrudgingly takes down the "truth people can't handle" while bellyaching about lack of support?
