I honestly only know about American politics from what I read on the Internet but since we all love shitting on leftists I figured we'd get a kick out of this. Also it's trending on Twitter so you know it's important.

NEW YORK — Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a 28-year-old political novice running on a low budget and an unabashedly liberal platform, upset longtime U.S. Rep. Joseph Crowley on Tuesday in the Democratic congressional primary in New York.

The surprise victory by the community organizer in a district that includes parts of the Bronx and Queens came after an energetic, grassroots campaign that mustered more than enough support in a low-turnout race that many had expected to be an easy win for Crowley, a member of the Democratic House leadership.

“The community is ready for a movement of economic and social justice. That is what we tried to deliver,” said Ocasio-Cortez, who has never held elected office and whose candidacy attracted only modest media attention.

She told The Associated Press after her victory that she didn’t have enough money to do polling in the race, but felt in her gut that her message had a chance to connect.

“I live in this community. I organized in this community. I felt the absence of the incumbent. I knew he didn’t have a strong presence,” she said.

Crowley has been in Congress since 1999 and hadn’t faced an opponent in a primary election since 2004, when Ocasio-Cortez was just a teenager. He was considered a candidate to become the next House speaker if Democrats win the majority.

“It’s not about me,” Crowley, 56, told his supporters at a campaign party following his loss. “It’s about America. I want nothing but the best for Ms. Ocasio-Cortez. I want her to be victorious.”

He later played guitar with a band at the election night gathering, and dedicated the first song, Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run,” to Ocasio-Cortez.

Crowley represents New York’s 14th Congressional District, where he is also the leader of the Queens Democratic party.

Ocasio-Cortez was outspent by an 18-1 margin during her race but won the endorsement of some influential groups on the party’s far left, including MoveOn, as well as the actress Cynthia Nixon, who is running for governor. She defeated Crowley by 15 percentage points.

Born in the Bronx to a mother from Puerto Rico and a father who died in 2008, Ocasio-Cortez said she decided to challenge Crowley to push a more progressive stance on economic and other issues.

She attended Boston University, where she earned degrees in economics and international relations, and also spent time working in the office of the late U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy.

After graduating, she returned to the Bronx where she became a community organizer. In the 2016 presidential campaign she worked for U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders.

Among her issues is expanding the Medicare program to people of all ages and abolishing Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. She recently went to Tornillo, Texas, to protest against policies that have separated parents from their children at the southern U.S. border.

Ocasio-Cortez gained some internet attention for a campaign video called “The Courage to Change,” a two-minute spot for which she wrote the script and featured footage from her own home.

Crowley is chair of the House Democratic Caucus, the fourth-highest ranking position in Democratic leadership in that chamber of Congress.

His loss drew the attention of President Donald Trump.

“Wow! Big Trump Hater Congressman Joe Crowley, who many expected was going to take Nancy Pelosi’s place, just LOST his primary election. In other words, he’s out! That is a big one that nobody saw happening. Perhaps he should have been nicer, and more respectful, to his President!” he tweeted.

The Republican candidate for the office, Anthony Pappas, is running unopposed and had no primary. Pappas teaches economics at St. John’s University.

She was a Bernie campaigner, is supported by BLM, and wants to abolish Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. Also this was in a solid-blue Congressional District so you know she's a shoo-in for next Congress.

But hey, we did get to see Trump laugh at Crowley on Twitter.

Republicans don't even have to do anything, AOC is splintering the party by herself. Hey, AOC, I imagine the reason your approval ratings are so low is because you're threatening to primary other Dems for not agreeing with you.
and she sorta screwed NY out of Amazon :/

"She has very likely turned off and discouraged many future employers from coming to New York. Case in point: Ken Griffin, who runs financial empire Citadel, said last week he is less likely to move his business to NYC after the “heartbreaking” Amazon exit."

Introspection isn’t millenials' strong suit. If it were, they’d actually realize how incompetent they are and the damage estrogen is inflicting on their own bodies.

What happened in 2017? I'm drawing a blank.
She's probably talking about Charlottesville as if it were a massive bloodbath complete with holocoaster 2.0

I hoped it wouldn't be Charlottesville. One is the loneliest lowest number.

62 people were killed and 827 injured in Islamic terrorist attacks in the EU that year, it wasn't as bad as 2016(122 dead) or 2015(150 dead) so things are looking up, if Islamic terror got down to the level of domestic far-right extremist terror it would be a net gain for society.

YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND!!!1111!! THE SHOOTER IS A PLANT BY THE US GOV, USED TO ELIMINATE POC JUST SO WHIPIPO CAN BECOME THE DOMINANT RACE!!!1111!!!
White people already are the dominant race.

Feel free to interpret this statement any way you like.

There were a whopping 18 murders that could be linked to "white supremacists" in the US in 2017 if you squinted and sorta looked at them sideways.

18.

About the same body count you'd expect on a balmy Friday night in Chicago.

And based on how they want to use the same policies for extremist murders as they use for Chicago murders, I can only assume they want more of them.

Well at least in Chicago no one actually believes that more gun control is going to stop the violence. Most liberals in the city do their best to avoid the topic altogether because otherwise they'd have to admit the cultural aspect of african american society that leads to such constant, extreme violence everywhere they live in large numbers.

It's a shame that this is what they go to, blaming centrists for the dem's failures, instead of looking at themselves and thinking "Well, just what the fuck is wrong with us?"

I glossed over this post, but holy fuck are you right.

Going through the data, which cannot be understated, AOC (31% favorable) IS LESS LIKED THAN DONALD TRUMP (36% favorable) IN NEW YORK. One of the largest Democrat strongholds in the entire world prefers Donald Trump over their own elected congresswoman, often cited as "the new face of the Democrat party". This is an full catastrophic faliure on all cylinders.

Not only that, but her cries of racism are really, really unfounded because although the data shows that although she is more disliked by white conservatives, it shows she's not really liked by anyone.

Her favorable ratings, by race
White - 29%
Black - 47%
Latino - 47%

By gender
Men - 32%
Women - 30%

By all measures, except one, she is less than 50% liked, with most looking to be near the 30% mark. People who identify as "Liberal" (not the same as Democrat) have her as 68% favorable. Those same "Liberal" poll people are always the most favorable for all politicians on this data set (with the exception of Donald Trump).

Not only that, but this data set has some real gems in it.

50% of New Yorkers polled think Donald Trump is doing an "OK" job (19% Fair, 17% Good, 14% Excellent) which is higher than AOC's favorablity rating.
51% of New Yorkers polled stated "NY is moving too far to the left, politically" which is higher than AOC's favorability rating.
67% of New Yorkers polled stated "Given the current politics in state government, it's getting harder for businesses to be successful in NY", which is higher than AOC's favorability rating.
Only 42% of New Yokers polled stated "After 3 months of full democratic control, it's clear that NY is headed in the right direction" which is really bad on it's own, but still higher than AOC's favorability rating.

I'm not sure how she can spin this as a "only white people matter" when she doesn't have a single positive data point to point to, not even on a technical level. If I was a democrat from NY who was somehow less popular there than Donald Trump, it would be my biggest secret and not something I tweet about non stop.

I was with you until "not one favorable data point". She's still doing well with people who identify as liberals/Dems, which could potentially keep her in Congress.

She's absolutely radioactive in a national election, and even a Senate election looks grim for her in NY. However, if the little liberal stronghold she got elected from likes her, she can keep her seat ad nauseum like other ineffectual blowhards such as Waters, Jackson Lee and probably a shitload of other less obvious lolcow reps.

Just liberals (68%), Democrats have her at 47% favorable.

Again, I would also not cite the liberals as a positive data point because on this data set, they are almost always most likely to rate a politician favorable. In this data set, the only politician that isn't most liked by liberals is Donald Trump. Additionally, "liberals" are the only group of people who strongly feel that NY is not moving too far left politically (Dems are at 53% on this, compared to 76% liberal).

Furthermore she is basically the least popular politican on there. She's rated lower than deBlasio, Schumer, Trump, NY State Assembly and NY State Senate. Technically Heastie and Cousins are rated lower but that's because 73% of people don't know who they are.

The only thing on this data sheet that she is more popular than is anti-vaxxers (only 18% of those polled feel that children should have the option of going to school unvaccinated).

I'm not a statistician or anything, but I wouldn't point out "I'm popular with the group that likes all the stuff everyone else, including Democrats, seems to really dislike" as a positive data point, but to be fair AOC did get elected and I didn't.

jfc 18%? What the fuck is wrong with these people? Are those numbers broken down by region at all?

They are, but there isn't a huge localized area. The only trend looks to be that anti-vaxxing (in this data set, at least) appear to be more popular with black people, and less popular with older people and people with money (+$100k/year).

People who are for sending un-vaccinated kids to school, regardless of parent's political beliefs.
Democrat - 12%
Republican - 20%
Independent/Other - 28%

NY City - 16%
Suburbs - 18%
Upstate - 20%

Black - 26%
White - 17%
Latino - 13%

Age
18 to 34 - 26%
35 to 55 - 20%
55 and over - 13%

Income
Under 50k - 20%
50k to 100k - 21%
100k and over - 15%

I'd always hear that the modern anti-vax movement was almost completely white yuppie liberals but these numbers definitely say otherwise. Tho it explains the lie- if black people are more likely to be anti-vax, that would look bad some blame whitey.

This is just this data set, though. A couple hundred, politically active, people from NY.

It's a decent poll to gauge AOC's popularity (because she represents NY) but the data isn't large enough to make observations about the anti-vaxx movement (which is nationwide).

In NY though, it's slightly more popular among blacks. If you wanted to be cynical, you could likely draw a parallel between black voters and voters who make less than 100k/year and make your own decision if that decision is being made because they are black, or because they are low income.

Even after the Amazon fumble, she'll find a way to fuck NYC out of more opportunities.
