I honestly only know about American politics from what I read on the Internet but since we all love shitting on leftists I figured we'd get a kick out of this. Also it's trending on Twitter so you know it's important.

NEW YORK — Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a 28-year-old political novice running on a low budget and an unabashedly liberal platform, upset longtime U.S. Rep. Joseph Crowley on Tuesday in the Democratic congressional primary in New York.

The surprise victory by the community organizer in a district that includes parts of the Bronx and Queens came after an energetic, grassroots campaign that mustered more than enough support in a low-turnout race that many had expected to be an easy win for Crowley, a member of the Democratic House leadership.

“The community is ready for a movement of economic and social justice. That is what we tried to deliver,” said Ocasio-Cortez, who has never held elected office and whose candidacy attracted only modest media attention.

She told The Associated Press after her victory that she didn’t have enough money to do polling in the race, but felt in her gut that her message had a chance to connect.

“I live in this community. I organized in this community. I felt the absence of the incumbent. I knew he didn’t have a strong presence,” she said.

Crowley has been in Congress since 1999 and hadn’t faced an opponent in a primary election since 2004, when Ocasio-Cortez was just a teenager. He was considered a candidate to become the next House speaker if Democrats win the majority.

“It’s not about me,” Crowley, 56, told his supporters at a campaign party following his loss. “It’s about America. I want nothing but the best for Ms. Ocasio-Cortez. I want her to be victorious.”

He later played guitar with a band at the election night gathering, and dedicated the first song, Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run,” to Ocasio-Cortez.

Crowley represents New York’s 14th Congressional District, where he is also the leader of the Queens Democratic party.

Ocasio-Cortez was outspent by an 18-1 margin during her race but won the endorsement of some influential groups on the party’s far left, including MoveOn, as well as the actress Cynthia Nixon, who is running for governor. She defeated Crowley by 15 percentage points.

Born in the Bronx to a mother from Puerto Rico and a father who died in 2008, Ocasio-Cortez said she decided to challenge Crowley to push a more progressive stance on economic and other issues.

She attended Boston University, where she earned degrees in economics and international relations, and also spent time working in the office of the late U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy.

After graduating, she returned to the Bronx where she became a community organizer. In the 2016 presidential campaign she worked for U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders.

Among her issues is expanding the Medicare program to people of all ages and abolishing Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. She recently went to Tornillo, Texas, to protest against policies that have separated parents from their children at the southern U.S. border.

Ocasio-Cortez gained some internet attention for a campaign video called “The Courage to Change,” a two-minute spot for which she wrote the script and featured footage from her own home.

Crowley is chair of the House Democratic Caucus, the fourth-highest ranking position in Democratic leadership in that chamber of Congress.

His loss drew the attention of President Donald Trump.

“Wow! Big Trump Hater Congressman Joe Crowley, who many expected was going to take Nancy Pelosi’s place, just LOST his primary election. In other words, he’s out! That is a big one that nobody saw happening. Perhaps he should have been nicer, and more respectful, to his President!” he tweeted.

The Republican candidate for the office, Anthony Pappas, is running unopposed and had no primary. Pappas teaches economics at St. John’s University.

She was a Bernie campaigner, is supported by BLM, and wants to abolish Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. Also this was in a solid-blue Congressional District so you know she's a shoo-in for next Congress.

But hey, we did get to see Trump laugh at Crowley on Twitter.

Just liberals (68%), Democrats have her at 47% favorable.

Again, I would also not cite the liberals as a positive data point because on this data set, they are almost always most likely to rate a politician favorable. In this data set, the only politician that isn't most liked by liberals is Donald Trump. Additionally, "liberals" are the only group of people who strongly feel that NY is not moving too far left politically (Dems are at 53% on this, compared to 76% liberal).

Furthermore she is basically the least popular politican on there. She's rated lower than deBlasio, Schumer, Trump, NY State Assembly and NY State Senate. Technically Heastie and Cousins are rated lower but that's because 73% of people don't know who they are.

The only thing on this data sheet that she is more popular than is anti-vaxxers (only 18% of those polled feel that children should have the option of going to school unvaccinated).

I'm not a statistician or anything, but I wouldn't point out "I'm popular with the group that likes all the stuff everyone else, including Democrats, seems to really dislike" as a positive data point, but to be fair AOC did get elected and I didn't.

Thanks for clarifying. That's actually worse than I thought for her.

Even before that, I was only pointing out she may hold on as a useless seat filler like other punchline reps due to the demographics and political leanings of her district, a liberal stronghold. Assuming it doesn't get written out of existence. It would be a hell of a lot more fun if she got stomped out hard in a primary. We may get another glorious round of crying millennial pics if that goes down. I swear those Hillary 2016 supporter pics never get old.

OCASIO-CORTEZ QUIETLY REMOVED FROM BOARD OF PAC SHE AND TOP AIDE CONTROLLED

Democratic Rep. Alexandria-Ocasio Cortez and her top aide are no longer board members of the outside PAC credited with orchestrating her political rise, according to a corporate document filed Friday to a Washington, D.C., agency.

The New York Democrat and her chief of staff, Saikat Chakrabarti, who served as her campaign chair, joined the board of Justice Democrats in December 2017, according to the political action committee’s website. It also said the two held “legal control over the entity” at the same time it was playing a key role in supporting Ocasio-Cortez’s campaign prior to her shock victory over incumbent Democratic Rep. Joe Crowley in June 2018.

Attorneys for Ocasio-Cortez said she was removed from Justice Democrats’ board in June 2018, but she was listed an “entity governor” of the PAC as recently as March 14, according to corporate filings, The Daily Caller News Foundation previously reported. Ocasio-Cortez and Chakrabarti were officially removed from Justice Democrats’ board on March 15, according to a corporate documentfiled that day to the Washington, D.C. Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs.

It’s unclear why it took Justice Democrats more than eight months to formally remove Ocasio-Cortez from its board. The PAC did not respond to a request for comment.

Ocasio-Cortez never disclosed to the Federal Election Commission (FEC) that she and Chakrabarti controlled Justice Democrats while it simultaneously supported her primary campaign.

If the FEC finds that her campaign and the PAC were operating in affiliation, it could result in “massive reporting violations” or potentially even jail time for Ocasio-Cortez and Chakrabarti, former FEC Commissioner Brad Smith previously told TheDCNF. Another former FEC commissioner, Hans von Spakovsky, wrote in a March 10 Fox News op-ed that he believes there’s sufficient evidence to “justify opening a criminal investigation” into Ocasio-Cortez.

Alexandra Rojas and Demond Drummer replaced Ocasio-Cortez and Chakrabarti on Justice Democrats’ board. Both have close ties to the congresswoman.

Rojas, Justice Democrats’ executive director, was a field organizer for the Ocasio-Cortez campaign in 2018 while she was also serving as campaign director for the PAC. Chakrabarti preceded Rojas as executive director.

Drummer is the executive director of New Consensus, a nonprofit group that played a key role in developing the Green New Deal.

The Green New Deal was written in a single weekend in December by New Consensus, Justice Democrats and Ocasio-Cortez staffers, along with the Sunrise Movement, a climate advocacy organization.

“We spent the weekend learning how to put laws together,” Chakrabarti told The New Yorker in January. “We looked up how to write resolutions.”

Am I going crazy, or has positive news coverage of the "Yaaaaaas Queen Slaaay" variety completely vanished for AOC? Ever since the Amazon mess, and now this FEC complaint, the media almost seems to be back-peddling on all of its coverage of her. Just something I noticed. It's just like the 180 the media did when the truth about the Covington kids came out.

Hey @The Jumping Dwarf how about a new poll question?

Suggestion: “If you absolutely had to, who would you do?”

It's not hard to read the tea leaves and see that the mainstream Democrats are backing away from her. Her days were probably numbered the day she primaried Crowley, who was at the time the 2nd or 3rd most powerful Dem in the house, but it seems the national DNC was willing to give her a small chance. Then throw in the Amazon debacle and now she's cost New York billions of dollars, and the state level parties, who I should remind you controls the redistricting that's coming up in 2020, are now pissed.fuckin They were already talking about maybe axing her district after the Crowley thing, but it seems definite now. Yes shes in a safe seat, but if the seat doesn't exist, oh well.

And with that in mind its not too much of a stretch to imagine someone in Albany calling the news outlets in NYC and saying "Don't waste your time on this chick, she's fuckin' gone in 2020."

I'm just hoping the dems doing Cortez dirty will turn off some of their extreme leftist wing and cause them to break off into a third party. I mean, that won't happen, but a man can hope.

A few of the further left outlets are still being positive, though even that's been ramped down from "yaaaas queen". They're basically trying to ignore all her other stuff and play up her "eviscerating" Republicans on twitter. A few more scandals and even that will disappear.

It seems the new angle is "Hahah why are conservitards so mad about this particular new senator? We can't imagine why, except she's a latinx womyn."

They're conveniently forgetting promoting her front and center constantly.

That was the train of thought for Bernie, when Clinton raped him out of nomination, yet like any good democrat, Bernie took his new house in North Hero and swallowed ... pride too. I don't think that it would be different with AOC, except that Bernie is an old white man, consequently he is more important.

Apparently she had quite the twitter tantrum over some talking heads on Fox News making fun of her for her affected accent when she pronounces her own name. Apparently she's "doing the work" of being "Latinx", all of which apparently hyphenate their last names, it's not fronting at all.

The absolute state of the DNC.
