I honestly only know about American politics from what I read on the Internet but since we all love shitting on leftists I figured we'd get a kick out of this. Also it's trending on Twitter so you know it's important.

NEW YORK — Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a 28-year-old political novice running on a low budget and an unabashedly liberal platform, upset longtime U.S. Rep. Joseph Crowley on Tuesday in the Democratic congressional primary in New York.

The surprise victory by the community organizer in a district that includes parts of the Bronx and Queens came after an energetic, grassroots campaign that mustered more than enough support in a low-turnout race that many had expected to be an easy win for Crowley, a member of the Democratic House leadership.

“The community is ready for a movement of economic and social justice. That is what we tried to deliver,” said Ocasio-Cortez, who has never held elected office and whose candidacy attracted only modest media attention.

She told The Associated Press after her victory that she didn’t have enough money to do polling in the race, but felt in her gut that her message had a chance to connect.

“I live in this community. I organized in this community. I felt the absence of the incumbent. I knew he didn’t have a strong presence,” she said.

Crowley has been in Congress since 1999 and hadn’t faced an opponent in a primary election since 2004, when Ocasio-Cortez was just a teenager. He was considered a candidate to become the next House speaker if Democrats win the majority.

“It’s not about me,” Crowley, 56, told his supporters at a campaign party following his loss. “It’s about America. I want nothing but the best for Ms. Ocasio-Cortez. I want her to be victorious.”

He later played guitar with a band at the election night gathering, and dedicated the first song, Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run,” to Ocasio-Cortez.

Crowley represents New York’s 14th Congressional District, where he is also the leader of the Queens Democratic party.

Ocasio-Cortez was outspent by an 18-1 margin during her race but won the endorsement of some influential groups on the party’s far left, including MoveOn, as well as the actress Cynthia Nixon, who is running for governor. She defeated Crowley by 15 percentage points.

Born in the Bronx to a mother from Puerto Rico and a father who died in 2008, Ocasio-Cortez said she decided to challenge Crowley to push a more progressive stance on economic and other issues.

She attended Boston University, where she earned degrees in economics and international relations, and also spent time working in the office of the late U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy.

After graduating, she returned to the Bronx where she became a community organizer. In the 2016 presidential campaign she worked for U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders.

Among her issues is expanding the Medicare program to people of all ages and abolishing Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. She recently went to Tornillo, Texas, to protest against policies that have separated parents from their children at the southern U.S. border.

Ocasio-Cortez gained some internet attention for a campaign video called “The Courage to Change,” a two-minute spot for which she wrote the script and featured footage from her own home.

Crowley is chair of the House Democratic Caucus, the fourth-highest ranking position in Democratic leadership in that chamber of Congress.

His loss drew the attention of President Donald Trump.

“Wow! Big Trump Hater Congressman Joe Crowley, who many expected was going to take Nancy Pelosi’s place, just LOST his primary election. In other words, he’s out! That is a big one that nobody saw happening. Perhaps he should have been nicer, and more respectful, to his President!” he tweeted.

The Republican candidate for the office, Anthony Pappas, is running unopposed and had no primary. Pappas teaches economics at St. John’s University.

She was a Bernie campaigner, is supported by BLM, and wants to abolish Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. Also this was in a solid-blue Congressional District so you know she's a shoo-in for next Congress.

But hey, we did get to see Trump laugh at Crowley on Twitter.

There is exactly one valid angle to the "free birth control pill" argument, but they refuse to use it.

That angle is that it is well known that African-American men tend to refuse to wear condoms, because bareback feels better.

However, women of other ethnicities don't have to deal with that problem very much. Thus, what has effectively happened is that a pressing African-American issue has been co-opted in the name of hedonism.
No shit condomless sex feels better, but if you don't want children then use literally any form of birth control.

What separates man from animal is our ability to overcome instinct, and we don't serve our species by allowing hedonism to reign.

I think @ProgKing of the North gets too much shit for what he says and I think that's honestly because he's a straight leftist and that's not too popular in A&H, but it is a good point that "wouldn't it be nice" is a bad argument by itself. Like, if I had infinite money I'd feed every starving child in Africa because of course that "would be nice". But then a more holistic analysis is that I'd be a one-man white man's burden creating a dependent class of black people who couldn't help themselves without my saintly largesse. Today's "they just need to eat some of your food" becomes tomorrow's "you're holding them hostage to your food supplies".
For example: The reason that Africa's textile industry is completely in the shitter is because we won't stop sending them free clothes and it's completely butchered local markets. Why buckle down and make your own clothing and fabrics when other countries will just shovel mountains of the stuff at you for free, and you can pawn it off for a few cents?

Blacks treat condoms like they’re made of kryptonite. Nigga gotta get his nut and condoms get in the way of that.

I used to work with a black cowboy who would insist I look at the nudes of various hideous white women he'd fuck

So I guess that's plausible

That's what white privilege is: ruining other people's societies so we can praise ourselves for the claim that "the other guy" is the bigger enemy.

THe problem is, those "wouldn't it be nice?" ideas ignore the fact that being nice, when it comes to Government, costs money, and we're already $22 trillion in the hole, we literally cannot afford to be nice.

And even if we could afford it, the Government has a horrid track record when it comes to administering the Department of Nice, 90% of it's funding disappears into the bureaucratic black hole as salary paid to consultants and to buy expensive furniture for executive offices, and at the end of the day, maybe someone out there gets a pack of all-natural dish soap, totally free, and that's held up as a great success....

Look at California, they niced themselves to fiscal death, trillions spent on every "wouldn't it be nice" promise. Sunshine, fresh food, clean air, hyper-sonic trains and artisan woven socks for everyone... and all the got was massive debt and cities overrun with piles of shit and needles.

"That would be nice" is the slippery slope that leads to ruin, because what sounds nice on paper frequently ignores the fact that the people implementing those ideas, well, AREN'T.

Sure, let’s just make hormones accessible to anyone.

As someone on birth control pills, that shit is serious. On top of literally interfering with with the brain, it has serious consequences if your cholesterol or blood sugar is high.

Basically, it increases your risk of having blood clots exponentially. And if your cholesterol, sugar, and/or blood pressure’s already high, it’s gonna fuck you up pretty fast.

So sure, let’s make it available over the counter in the US. If AOC’s secret master plan is to get rid of all the diabetics, fatties, or women with health issues, well played.

And yes, there are new, 3rd generation pills made specifically for people with high cholesterol, but your fucking doctor has to make that call. Not you. Not to mention there aren’t available as widely. Often, pharmacies have to order them in.

I cannot emphasise how much consultations with a doctor are important for that shit, and I cannot understand why AOC promotes this.

But then again, she also supports Mermaids, that trans charity that feeds hormones to kids in the UK, so I guess she really doesn’t care.

Birth control is available over the counter in other first world countries, and women aren't dropping dead of strokes. Pharmacists are completely capable of doing a light intake to make sure a woman asking for birth control "over the counter" (this means buying it from the pharmacist without a prescription and not just grabbing it off a store shelf) doesn't have any major red flags. The morning after pill is already available "over the counter" in the U.S., and the world hasn't ended. Doctors oppose it because they'll no longer be able to force women to make appointments for a birth control refill. Forcing patients to come in for unnecessary appointments and procedures is one reason among many why health care is so expensive in the U.S.

I wouldn't be opposed to making birth control an over the counter thing. It's not like you get high off the shit. It's going to make money so that's not the issue, it probably is just doctors getting spastic and territorial.

It's not exactly an expensive thing either so why does it need to be free?

I guarantee you that if birth control pills became over the counter here, a bunch of idiot women (and trenders because of course they'd go out and buy over-the-counter birth control for women) would buy them, completely ignore the warnings of the pharmacist and packaging, fuck up taking them or getting side effects, then start reeeeing at teh evol pharmacists and corporations for giving them something so dangerous and at Republicans for allowing dangerous pills to be sold over the counter.

That's just how things go. I mean I have no particular care over it, legalize over-the-counter birth control if you want, hell legalize the fuck out of a lot of things and maybe we can actually have medicine that does something other than exceptionally mild pain relief. Just don't expect the people currently demanding it to take any personal responsibility when they turn out to be too stupid to handle what they wanted.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is much better at placing blame than taking responsibility. In fact blaming others for her own failures is why she's where she is today, as with most of the criminals we're forced to call our "elected" "leaders"

Free Birth Control paid by the State? The Question arises, where is the money going to come from?
It's all well and good to preach about free stuff, but there's a reason why Taxes in the UK are high, if you're going to hand over such responsibility to the State, you better be damn well prepared to see your taxes wasted on a bureaucracy that exists only to fuck more things up.

Buy some Condoms, and if you can't because it's too expensive, and you don't want children, then you are in no position to take the gamble of fucking someone.
Just because you can, don't you mean should, sex isn't a basic human right.

Duh, tax the rich! Everyone knows the rich have infinite money, and we can totally start taking as much of that money from them as we want if we just finally start taxing them like has never ever been done before! You can pay for absolutely anything if you just tax the rich! This will definitely not raise taxes for anyone who does not own 100 solid gold supercars!

Yes, imagine having to take blood tests and all these other pesky things that come with messing up with your hormones, cholesterol, and blood pressure.

Or are you suggesting the pharmacists turn away every woman that looks slightly overweight and can’t show proof of having eaten her vegetables? Or any woman that smokes? Or has migraines?
That’ll go over well I’m sure.

The countries where birth control pills are available without prescription are China, India, Greece, Turkey, Mexico, Brazil, Portugal, South Africa, Korea and Russia.
That’s not a lot of first world countries.

And the whole point of the morning after pill is that it’s not supposed to be used regularly because of how bad it is for you.

What I find absolutely hilarious is that the same "pro-life" people who are opposed to abortion, are also vehemently opposed to birth control medications and even condoms.

I mean seriously, what do you want people to do? Stop having sex?

I mean seriously, what do you want people to do? Stop having sex?
Yes? That's what abstinence is. If you do not want to have children, at the minimum use a condom. If you want a guarantee to never have children, never have sex.

The majority of pro life people are absolutely fine with birth control and condoms, it's just that personal responsibility is a phrase never used by Democrats. Oh, and sex is pushed as an innocent thing that has zero consequences, so have as much of it as you want no matter how old you are, even if you're 10!
