I honestly only know about American politics from what I read on the Internet but since we all love shitting on leftists I figured we'd get a kick out of this. Also it's trending on Twitter so you know it's important.

NEW YORK — Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a 28-year-old political novice running on a low budget and an unabashedly liberal platform, upset longtime U.S. Rep. Joseph Crowley on Tuesday in the Democratic congressional primary in New York.

The surprise victory by the community organizer in a district that includes parts of the Bronx and Queens came after an energetic, grassroots campaign that mustered more than enough support in a low-turnout race that many had expected to be an easy win for Crowley, a member of the Democratic House leadership.

“The community is ready for a movement of economic and social justice. That is what we tried to deliver,” said Ocasio-Cortez, who has never held elected office and whose candidacy attracted only modest media attention.

She told The Associated Press after her victory that she didn’t have enough money to do polling in the race, but felt in her gut that her message had a chance to connect.

“I live in this community. I organized in this community. I felt the absence of the incumbent. I knew he didn’t have a strong presence,” she said.

Crowley has been in Congress since 1999 and hadn’t faced an opponent in a primary election since 2004, when Ocasio-Cortez was just a teenager. He was considered a candidate to become the next House speaker if Democrats win the majority.

“It’s not about me,” Crowley, 56, told his supporters at a campaign party following his loss. “It’s about America. I want nothing but the best for Ms. Ocasio-Cortez. I want her to be victorious.”

He later played guitar with a band at the election night gathering, and dedicated the first song, Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run,” to Ocasio-Cortez.

Crowley represents New York’s 14th Congressional District, where he is also the leader of the Queens Democratic party.

Ocasio-Cortez was outspent by an 18-1 margin during her race but won the endorsement of some influential groups on the party’s far left, including MoveOn, as well as the actress Cynthia Nixon, who is running for governor. She defeated Crowley by 15 percentage points.

Born in the Bronx to a mother from Puerto Rico and a father who died in 2008, Ocasio-Cortez said she decided to challenge Crowley to push a more progressive stance on economic and other issues.

She attended Boston University, where she earned degrees in economics and international relations, and also spent time working in the office of the late U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy.

After graduating, she returned to the Bronx where she became a community organizer. In the 2016 presidential campaign she worked for U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders.

Among her issues is expanding the Medicare program to people of all ages and abolishing Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. She recently went to Tornillo, Texas, to protest against policies that have separated parents from their children at the southern U.S. border.

Ocasio-Cortez gained some internet attention for a campaign video called “The Courage to Change,” a two-minute spot for which she wrote the script and featured footage from her own home.

Crowley is chair of the House Democratic Caucus, the fourth-highest ranking position in Democratic leadership in that chamber of Congress.

His loss drew the attention of President Donald Trump.

“Wow! Big Trump Hater Congressman Joe Crowley, who many expected was going to take Nancy Pelosi’s place, just LOST his primary election. In other words, he’s out! That is a big one that nobody saw happening. Perhaps he should have been nicer, and more respectful, to his President!” he tweeted.

The Republican candidate for the office, Anthony Pappas, is running unopposed and had no primary. Pappas teaches economics at St. John’s University.

She was a Bernie campaigner, is supported by BLM, and wants to abolish Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. Also this was in a solid-blue Congressional District so you know she's a shoo-in for next Congress.

But hey, we did get to see Trump laugh at Crowley on Twitter.

Trump predicts AOC will challenge Schumer and 'kick his a--'
President Trump said Tuesday ahead of his State of the Union speech that he believes New York progressive Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez will challenge incumbent Sen. Chuck Schumer one day for his Senate seat representing New York.

“I think she will kick his a--,” the president said during a lunch with journalists to preview his speech.

She's not going anywhere until she pays her party fees. It's laughable to think that the Democrats are going to allow this idiot to skate by on her considerable debt.

If AOC wants to challenge Chuck Schumer, she's going to be running third party.

It's not laughable to think the Democratic Party will do anything stupid.

Not a commie despot but if he pushes even 1/10 of what he promises he'll bring the entire usa economy down. The cost of GND, free college and free healthcare individually is massive.

True.

I'm not against him for being a communist per se, but for having a communist's economic sensibilities, (i.e. NONE)

HIs "free shit for everyone, paid for by the rich" spiel is ridiculous, unfair and ultimately unattainable. Even if elected, congress will never give it to him and he'll wash out a defeated mistake. The fact he's never wavered from this vision for 50 years is not a virtue.

I'm amazed, but not amazed, the lack of economic know-how in the average socialist flavored Dem has spread to the point they don't get what's essentially paying rent.

As a (rather tired) center-left individual, if it makes up for it, I don't consider The Squad part of the Democratic Party.

I consider them retarded instead.

Bernie got kicked out of a commune for being too lazy, he's never held a real job and has been in politics for decades. He's voted along Democrat party lines and is just as establishment as Pelosi. His supporters are so incredibly stupid.

Maybe some of the rest are exceptional like a fox?

Current DNC, not much. There's probably some more moderate Democrats out there.

I don't like the "no grey area" thing where I'm supposedly conservative because I dislike the current DNC, though.

There's often plenty of grey area, but at some point when it's being so heavily overshadowed it's not really worth taking the time to make qualifications, in my opinion.

It's sort of like, say... feminism. Are there a goodly number of feminists that don't hate men, would sincerely like to address problems men have, and actually acknowledge female privilege? Probably. But they're not the majority, they're not the ones driving the movement, and they're definitely not the ones influencing laws and practices to both privilege women and disadvantage men. So since the sane feminists who are not shrieking malevolent harpies have zero power, little visibility, and generally wind up doing little but enabling their more hateful brethren, it's not only far easier but also effectively accurate to just say "Feminism sucks", rather than launch into a long nuanced statement that takes into account its entire history and every single potential member of the movement.

At present, the DNC is run by crazy idiots. The crazy idiots in the DNC get all the visibility and airtime. They have all the power and they are declaring themselves as defining the DNC. While I'm sure there's a handful of somewhat sane Democrat politicians and a rather broader range of somewhat sane Democrat voters, they are effectively powerless under the current dynamic... they pretty much don't count for the purposes of governing, so they don't really count when making statements about the political structure either.

Omar and Tlaib among Democrats who don't stand for Tuskegee Airman at State of the Union
by John Gage

Reps. Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib did not stand after President Trump recognized Tuskegee Airman Charles McGee during the president's State of the Union address.
Most of the lawmakers in attendance for Trump's Tuesday night speech gave McGee a standing ovation when the president acknowledged him, but the pair of freshmen Democrats were notably resolute, remaining in their seats.

During his address, Trump honored McGee and his great-grandson, Iain, 13, who "aspires to go to the Air Force Academy."

"Sitting beside Iain tonight is his greatest hero of them all. Charles McGee was born in Cleveland, Ohio, one century ago. Charles is one of the last surviving Tuskegee Airmen, the first black fighter pilots, and he also happens to be Iain's great-grandfather," the president said.

"After more than 130 combat missions in World War II, he came back to a country still struggling for civil rights and went on to serve America in Korea and Vietnam. On Dec. 7, Charles celebrated his 100th birthday," Trump continued. "A few weeks ago, I signed a bill promoting Charles McGee to brigadier general. And earlier today, I pinned the stars on his shoulders in the Oval Office. General McGee: Our nation salutes you."

Tlaib and Omar broke with their fellow "Squad" member, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, in attending the president's address.

You went from being a bartender to being a highly-publicized member of Congress, what the fuck are you talking about

She literally has no room to fucking talk, how in the seven rings of Hell can she say that when she was a BARTENDER to quite possibly one of the faces of the new era of Congresspeople?

She would probably say that she worked hard and tried to represent her community. Completely missing the point.
