The Square Enix Griefing Thread

I still can’t understand their insistence on making XV a franchise despite being an unproven game. Them cancelling the DLCs for the game pissed off many of their fans, and that movie they made might have lost then a lot of money.
I assume it was due to the game being stuck in on-and-off development hell for a decade before being designated the fifteenth game because they had nothing else on hand, and wanted to try and recoup as many loses as possible. Some people like 15 and I don't give them too much shit for it, but the history of the title's mismanagement and behind the scenes drama could easily fill a book.

I wouldn't say that Final Fantasy is carrying the whole company with how 15 failed to break even (directors don't get fired if a game is successful) and 7R didn't sell as many copies as that. SaGa and Mana were revived for a reason after all. We got fried chicken derby 3 and a remake of Tactics seems inevitable, the problem is that SE seems hell bent on whoring FF out as the mobage franchise instead of concentrating on real spin offs beyond the aforementioned.

Builders 2 really is amazing though, I strongly recommend that game to everyone even if they typically dislike crafting games.
Lemme rephrase myself, FFXIV is carrying the company.

Most FF spinoffs have been getting the mobage treatment at this point as it is. And, in a few rare cases, they've been doing better than main platform spinoffs.

Remember when Opera Omnia was supposed to be a companion piece to Dissidia NT? And then Opera Omnia ended up being far more well-received than NT that it made them go "Oh shit, well, I guess let's flesh out OO instead"?

Conversely, remember when they doubled down on First Soldier being a mobile exclusive game? And when that fucking tanked, only AFTERWARDS did they go "Huh, maybe we should've put that on PC instead"?

Square Enix is pretty retarded with how they choose to handle their IPs most of the time.

I can only assume autism is why they run things like that. Nippon autism at that. At least said autism managed to unearth Yoshida, whose shoulders are probably carrying the entire company gaming division at this point.

It's literally just corporate autism, and it has been well-documented as such in the cases of XIV 1.0 and hiring on Yoshida in the first place.

Suits in big positions forcing executive decisions that are, in a way, "smart" from a business perspective, but completely tone-deaf to the the audience they are trying to market their product towards. It's classic Nippon corporate autism, as you defined it.

I assume it's also part of their business acumen to have fingers in as many pies as possible, considering the array of games out there that have Square Enix publishing attributed to it. I'm still a bit blindsided in retrospect from the fact that smaller stuff like Powerwash Sim has Square Enix's name on it, for instance.

So around when did Square Enix started being retarded? I can't remember anything pre ff13 but that's more because I must have forgotten things
Oh and how did they fuck up Dissidia NT?

The visuals suck, the story sucks, the game is loaded with predatory microtransactions, the netcode is dogshit and matchmaking relies on peer-to-peer rather than any dedicated servers, its poorly optimized, and because of all of these reasons which have, apparently, continued to go completely unaddressed, the game's online scene, which was supposed to be one of its biggest draws, is absolutely dead in the water with practically nobody bothering to play it anymore.

What kills me with the online is that if you don't want easily beaten bots, you need 6 people because the only mode is 3v3. Not having a 1v1 for online was a stupid move.

How much loaded with Micro-transactions? That term brings to mind DoA 5 and 6

It was a thing at the time. Remember the Kickstarter disaster known as Mighty No. 9? Same sort of thing.

Not as bloated as DoA5 (because holy shit, its price tag is close to Train Simulator DLC); but there was a handful of DLC characters that came later, and then a lot of cosmetic DLC.

Sqaure has a lot issues but far cry from the 360/ps3 era days, where on consoles they rarely put out anything good.

But not to say Sqaure is without issues still

Outrider: Game seems fine outside it has pointless always online requirement even if you play solo. This caused issues when it came out where demand was too high for the servers to deal with. The game will also close down at meaning it will never be playable again.

Babylon's Fall: Dev hell it looks like and for some reason made the game a GAAS. Truth is platinum games have never had a huge sale hits (outside NieR), so even if the quality of this game was higher you are asking a huge thing for it ever recover the costs needed for a GAAS game. Not shocking it didn't last a year.

Chocobo GP: Why is this switch only, the console where if you want a kart game you will just get Mario Kart 8 or if you want a second one Crash Team Racing and what is with the micro transactions in a game meant for kids?

Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin: What the hell is up with that PC port, need to remove hair to make it run like not shit. Koei Tecmo are infamous for bad pc ports, which is why I question why Sqaure didn't just outsource the port to someone else.

Balan Wonderworld: Having played the game, the devs didn't do an awful job, it's just not much you could do to fix that game with such a flawed core idea. It should have been rejected from the pitch, the game's gimmick is that it only has two button, one to change outfits and other to do the outfits gimmick. So the game has to be designed around the idea you may not be able to even jump in a platforming game. The only time the game works at all is the boss fights where they don't have to worry about the level design.

The Quiet Man: Balan seems to get the most shit from people, but The Quiet Man truly far worse. I have no idea what Sqaure saw in this game, it fails on every level. A story you can't understand until you play it again, because you play as a deaf guy therefor don't hear anything until second time around and the worst combat I've seen in a game.

Dragon Quest 1 to 3: Got switch ports in 2019, however in Japan came out on ps4 in 2017, for some reason Sqaure never put the ps4 versions out outside of Japan despite the translations being done for the switch.

Kingdom Hearts: They finally came to pc but as epic store exclusives, issue is they are still not yet on steam despite it being well over a year old.

Why is this switch only,
Because its a game meant for kids, and the Nintendo kiddie bias is alive and well. At the very least, Square Enix recognize (correctly) that Xbots and Sony Ponies won't give a crap about this game.

Because Square Enix are greedy assholes...and morons.

But not to say Sqaure is without issues still...
Basically the long and short of your comment is that Square Enix are morons and a lot of their issues are entirely self inflicted. Now that Sqeenix has basically sold off their western divisions, and can no longer blame them for their losses, it will interesting to see what happens now.

well that, and they are far better than they used to be but still have a ways to go.

Mean for everything dumb thing they do, can point out one or more good things about them. Which during the ps3 era would be hard pressed to do, but end of the day still lot of dumb shit.

Well...
Doesn't look like SE will get better

The only good thing Squeenix has going for it, other than re-releasing shit that's 20 years old, is FFXIV and Dragon Quest. FFXVI could go either way and FF7R always has an asterisk weighing it down (like the PC version being exclusive to Epic for a year for no good reason; at least, unlike Kingdom Hearts, it has finally come to Steam).

I'm weirdly unsure about DQ12 with the change from turn-based combat.

But for past games from this gen, I enjoyed FF7 remake, FF15, NieR Automata, DQ11, I Am Setsuna, Dragon Quest Warriors (2nd was not good however), KH3 and if you count it the Guardians of the Galaxy game. Won't say they all were great but still least 7/10s for me personally..

However still lots of shit and duds such as Balan Wonderworld, Chocobo GP, Neo: The World Ends with You, Secret of Mana remake, The Quite Man, Left Alive, Murdered: Soul Suspect and Mobius Final Fantasy to name some of the them.

Was that confirmed? I thought it was just speculation. If so, fuck Square for slitting the throat of every major turn-based JRPG left.
Yuji Horii surprisingly revealed that Dragon Quest XII will not feature a turn-based battle system, only saying that "it won't completely disappear, but it'll be different. Those who played Dragon Quest until now will still feel at home".
