I might be late, but this is the first I've heard of it. I wonder if he's going to get the remake treatment like Crash Bandicoot got. I will say the first one I played with Gex was fun
Disregard this I'm retarded. A more real answer is that the platinum higher ups have been trying to move to a more service based game set up because they don't feel like their more niche titles are bringing enough in.
I honestly don't understand SE's reason for greenlighting these games. Like, with some exceptions like Nier Automata and Marvel's Guardians Of The Galaxy, whenever they try to publish something that isn't directly worked on in-house, the result usually ends up a complete mess.
Heck, all of these five were basically the results of other studios and their decisions. (Human Head, Ilinx, Eidos/Crystal Dynamics, Arzest, and Platinum Games respectively). You'd think that SE would look at what they gave the go-ahead, and think "wait, do we really want to publish this?" Seriously, they should just stick with the titles they themselves develop, as those usually (key word being usually) turn out decent to good on the whole.
There's a reason I consider SE to be simultaneously one of the best major game studios working today, and also one of the worst.
Their Japanese division is printing money. Their Western division is underperforming by a big margin.
The western division is "Square Enix" in name, but it's actually a result of purchases & mergers: Squaresoft, Enix and Eidos. And holy shit, it is terrible. Nonsensical DLC and silly release edition nonsense, along with forcing a GaaS business model (because that's what earns the most money when it hits the right part of the gamer population) onto a development studio who has neither the interest nor the experience to do so, then trying to shift the game's failure on said studio.
The first Gex was a memorable platformer for the time. But it's very, very 90s in every way. I do think it held up better than the collect-a-thon sequels.
A: Yoko Taro is the guy in charge of Nier, and if you mean a direct sequel to Automata Taro has actively said he will never ever make one of those
B: During the development period for Babylons Fall Taro was already working on the Nier remake, Nier Reincarnation, and Voice of Cards so he was already busy
C: Platinum is retarded and keeps stretching themselves way too thin. From like 2013-2018 they worked on about 14 different games despite only having about 300 employees total
I'm not bullshitting when I say the following, yes, the games are surprisingly good, even if the titular character in question is considered shitpost material.
Wasn't a fan either. I'm a big Nioh fan but felt a disconnect between the story and the structure of that kind of game. Combat was alright but the levels were bland as hell even compared to Nioh 1. Only played up to the pirate cave so i'm not sure how much more there was but wasn't impressed.
