Square Enix To Be "Aggressive In Applying" AI Going Forwards

Must... Consume... Content

Ah, what a lovely way to kick off 2024, eh?

Square Enix's President Takashi Kiryu has revealed that the company will be "aggressive in applying" AI in its content development and publishing divisions in the future after he praised the technology in a New Year's Letter (thanks, VGC).

Published on January 1st, 2024, the letter outlines industry innovations and Kiryu's vision for Square Enix moving forward. With AI specifically, he mentions that "generative AI has the potential not only to reshape what we create but also to fundamentally change the processes by which we create, including programming".

Kiryu then presents Square Enix's goals as it moves into 2024, stating his intention to increase knowledge sharing in the company, optimise resource allocation, promote global collaboration, and other thrilling means of conducting serious business.

In an alarming but not altogether surprising paragraph, he then mentions that Square Enix will be "aggressive in applying" AI for both short-term and long-term means:

"We also intend to be aggressive in applying AI and other cutting-edge technologies to both our content development and our publishing functions. In the short term, our goal will be to enhance our development productivity and achieve greater sophistication in our marketing efforts. In the longer term, we hope to leverage those technologies to create new forms of content for consumers, as we believe that technological innovation represents business opportunities."

Sounds rather yucky, though we'd like to keep an open mind for now; the short-term applications sound entirely inoffensive, after all, but we're a bit wary of these so-called 'new forms of content'. This might not necessarily be games, but we're just going to have to wait and see what Square Enix has in store as we move through 2024.

BECAUSE EVEN YOU KNOW IT'S SHAMEFUL

fucking ffx "contender for best ff game", get the fuck out of here, you SCRUB

incidentally last night i dragged out the ol' ps3 specifically to boot up ffx because i wanted to see how likely it would be for my party to beat dark yojimbo. the answer is no. not even 'not likely', just 'no'. there's no fucking way i can rely on zanmato 5 fucking times, the odds are infinitesimal.

What the fuck happened between 2012 and 2014? The drop in quality between FF12 and FF13 might be the biggest I've ever seen at least in terms of vidya.

Seeing the quality drop from Square Enix lately has been kind of depressing.

I had no idea how bad it was until I was given Various Daylife for Christmas from a friend. I never thought it was possible to make a game THAT boring, jfc.

FFX's story is PERFECT, if you didn't cry at the laughing scene you're not human. In fact, everyone who didn't should watch this autistic video passionately explaining the scene so they can understand it, and then cry.

Imagine trying to beat the special bosses, can't be me. I love the damn game but I fought one by accident and noped the fuck out forever. I was even pretty into Trophy hunting at the time and still wouldn't put myself through it.

If by lately you mean over 20 years, yeah. Well, I guess it keeps dropping to new lows... I fear for DQ12.

COPE. i'm lazy and not watching the video but i remember hearing that the laughing scene makes more sense in japanese, and it was just awkward translation combined with a lack of knowledge about japanese culture. or something. it's a dumb scene fuck you.

conceptually ffx is good. i like the lore and the world. it's just that the main cast is insufferable (except auron, of course) and kinda ruins things imo

also in the novella tidus dies because he kicked a mine he mistook for a blitzball. this is your protagonist.

i was able to cheese my way through the other dark aeons with zanmato, but obviously square enix planned for people doing this so they made dark yojimbo a 5-part fight so the odds of you getting zanmato 5 times in a row is stupidly low, even if you know about yojimbo's hidden compatibility and motivation mechanics. like yeah, i can just make my actual party suck less, but i don't feel like dealing with the fucking sphere grid and even MORE grinding. i just want cheap easy wins goddammit

I'm legally obligated to post this

Much as I love FFX - it might just be the Sphere Grid interacting perfectly with the autism - I'm not going to say it didn't have its issues. Then again, I actually like the FF13 Trilogy, my opinion can be disregarded...

I'm playing FF7R. Its interesting. Haven't played the original although I know the infamous scene. But she seems nice so I hope she lives. This whole part with Jessie's upside house was it in the original? And the motorcycle dude?

Now they jumped off the train and are trying to get to the big black guy.

It was worth the grind. That's the best part of these games.

Motorcycle dude is like an angel's kiss, blink and it's gone. and yeah, he's a new character who I sadly don't expect we'll see again. One of the things the original failed was to show me how much of a beast a 1st tier soldier is, add the extra factor of them being partly insane from the mako inyections to make them even neater.

I'm fine with ff7r now that I've accepted it's a sequel, I just find it absolute bullshit that it was marketed as a remake when that is a filthy fucking lie. I'm kind of surprised you are enjoying it because the game assumesso much that you played the original to fuck with you.

As for squeenix... after the merger they have been shit. They have had a bit of a resurgance with stuff like bravely default, octopath, triangle and specially Live A Live in remembering that A and AA exists, but they ONLY do RPGs (and outside of Live A Live they are all mid to alright at best).

Where the fuck is Einhander, Ergeiz or Tobal? The square I loved was great with rpgs, but they also experimented a lot.

Wait what
No spoiler but what do you mean it assumes you play the original?

I do think its odd there's no like character bio section and stuff.

I’ve never really been a big fan of squeenix games outside of final fantasy and Nier. Well other than the Octopath traveler games that I tried and am really liking. I never really care to try out slop like various daylife.

Mmm, ok, I'll rephrase that more. There are events that you will just go "oh, that happened" where somebody that played the original would go "wait what?!". And it doesn't go into particular detail in those moments either. But that was my impression when playing, if you feel it stands on it's own, then great.

Various Daylife
Saw a video about this recently, I forgot that it released and never checked it out. Sounds like they phoned it in, as if I couldn't tell from the title alone.
If by lately you mean over 20 years, yeah.
Isn't that nuts? I suspect that most of us here are invested in Squeenix due to loving Squaresoft in the 90's. At this point, I've been routinely disappointed by Square Enix's releases for twice as long as I was enjoying them...but the old stuff was so good that I can't fully give up on them like some kind of battered wife who keeps going back to her husband.

Without spoiling anything: It's not actually a remake. It's more akin to a reimagining, but the original still occurred and is canon to the remake. If you haven't played the original, then you won't be able to pick up on it & it shouldn't ruin anything for you, but there are a lot of points where things play out differently from the original and the characters are somewhat aware of that.

It's an interesting way to keep the game fresh for those of us who obsessively played the original while still releasing something approachable for newbies without 25+ years of history with the game. I'm not a fan of it, and would have preferred a 1:1 remake, but I can see what they were going for. If you enjoy the remake, then try the ps1 version and this will all make sense + add a lot of context for the final part of the remake.

There's plot beats that are intentionally different - some of which are coming later on, but the game makes it clear that SE wants to do its own thing with the remake and not be shackled down fully to the original. After some time I'm willing to see where they're going considering how well they did with Midgar and characterizing President Shinra.
