The Swifties - A New Age Religious Movement Revolving Around Taylor Swift

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
Now that Stan Twitter is fading in importance (due to the community being predominantly liberal), the Swiftie fanbase (and many other pop fanbases) is more fragmented. What began on MySpace, then shifted to Tumblr, then Twitter, is now fragmented between what remains of Stan Twitter, attempts to rebuild it on BlueSky, various Discord groups, various forums (ATRL, bcharts), reddit... Tik Tok despite still being popular, is not oriented towards text content which I think is still important for these sorts of fandoms to thrive. There's a Youtube community too, but even though you can make long comments under fan videos, the platform doesn't really facilitate engaging with other commenters - you can't follow commenters and have their comments show up on your feed, message them or search through their post history, you only follow video creators.

Will the Swiftie cult die down, or will it re-emerge elsewhere?

Reddit is one candidate.

During the earlier days of Reddit (late 00s-mid 10s), most of the Hollywood starlets reddit fandoms were claimed by pedo coomers. That goes for Selena Gomez, Miley Cyrus, Ariana Grande, Miranda Cosgrove, basically all of them were counting down when they'd turn 18 and even with the adult stars like Katy Perry, the content was almost exclusively reposting photos and coom posting.

Maybe it's because Taylor Swift was somewhat outside the Disney/Nickelodeon/Hollywood sphere when she got started in country but her subreddit was an exception to that rule and got claimed by some autistic simp who limited picture reposts to one day a week and banned coom posting. By the mid-2010s r/taylorswift had grown larger than the other pop girl subreddits. It was mostly autistic simps but they kept it PG which made it a welcoming place for cupcake fangirls fleeing the now porn-ridden Tumblr and the intensity of Stan Twitter, resulting in a predominantly female demographic by the late 2010s.

Besides r/TaylorSwift, other major related subreddits

r/YouBelongWithMemes - Taylor Swift memes, about as funny as you'd expect coming from girls and autistic simps
r/SwiftlyNeutral - an attempt by Swifties to leave the cult where it is it more acceptably to say you don't like the smell of her farts, but it has gradually become taken back over by committed fans
r/taylorandtravis - for Swifties shipping Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce
r/travisandtaylor - Taylor Swift snark sub

Other communities
Popjustice - older (Millenials typical) pop fans, mostly SJWs who prefer indie artists like Ethel Cain and Janelle Monae and like to snark on Taylor and Swifties, although they're not as snarky as they were in 2016-2019.
https://atrl.net/ - forum for gay pop stans, used to be a no holds barred shit-flinging mess fighting over why their fave is the most impactful and why the other popstars are all brainless cracked hags and flops, but moderation in the past years has made it less entertaining
https://pulsemusic.proboards.com/ - mostly boring forum for pop fans, a lot of them obsessed with chart stats

Some notable unhinged behaviour from Swifties included trying to force Taylor Swift to break up with Matty Healy for being a racist misogynist (ie they discovered he has some old edgy comments that are in existence online). She wound up breaking up with him soon after, seemingly for her own reasons, but you can't help but wonder if she would have been willing to put up with the pressure from fans.
At least some her fans recognize how cringe that was
Of course Taylor did what she always does, and wrote a song about it.
I'll tell you something right now
I'd rather burn my whole life down
Than listen to one more second of all this bitchin' and moanin'
I'll tell you something 'bout my good name
It's mine alone to disgrace
I don't cater to all these vipers dressed in empath's clothing

God save the most judgmental creeps
Who say they want what's best for me
Sanctimoniously performing soliloquies I'll never see
Thinkin' it can change the beat
Of my heart when he touches me

Swifties were also freaking out about Taylor being friendly with fellow Chiefs WAG Brittany Mahomes due to seemingly being a Trump supporter.
Swifties talking about how they cut themselves off from 80% of their family for being Trump supporters so if they can do it, so can Taylor.
(Taylor father, Scott Swift, who put a tonne of time and money into getting her career started, is likely a Republican, a few years ago he posted on Facebook about doing his taxes and filling in the question about dependents with something along the lines of "yes - 20 million illegal aliens and 10 million criminals". He privated his Facebook account before that post got too much public attention. Anyhow, Taylor is still fairly close to him despite their political differences)

Found a funny addition. Someone has composed a full thesis-length introduction to Gaylor on A03, the fanfiction website, and no it is not satire.

You can peruse the whole thing here: https://archive.is/FuH9i

some particularly funny/bizarre excerpts:

The author also has the audacity to suggest that it's AKSHULLY homophobic to deny that Taylor might be gay (even though she's said many times otherwise) because that would imply being gay is BAD....as opposed to, you know, it being insanely creepy, invasive and fucked to document her every movement desperately trying to find "proof" (aka confirmation bias) that she is one way or the other, not to mention totally invalidating platonic affection in female friendships. It's sort of on par with creepily insisting close guy friends are secretly fucking, honestly.

Even more bizarrely, almost or all of them women allegedly romantically linked to Taylor are now married to men. You'd think there'd be, you know, maybe ONE or two lesbians in the bunch, but nope.

This was my favourite fandom crossover of all time!

Matty Healy has done a number of very bad unpersonable things like throw up Roman salutes on stage, but this particular incident wasn't even his fault. He was on The Adam Friedland Show (the low-effort Cumtown sequel) and Nick Mullen was riffing on 'Japanese exchange soldiers at a concentration camp' and something about a porn site called Ghetto Gaggers, and Matty was just playing along and laughing. Somehow this got out (probably obsessive 1975 fans found it) and spread to the Swifties and millions of basic white girls came face to face with the Cumboys in possibly the funniest way ever. It fucking kills me that it fizzled out so quickly and we never got paparazzi asking Taylor about Nick Mullen and what she thought about his Chinese impression.

I'm still shocked that Taylor Swift didn't make it into Billboard's top 10 for 2024. It's a testament to just how bad The Tortured Poets Department is. I've managed to avoid all but one song - "I Can Do It With A Broken Heart" - that plays in the lobby at work. The line "I'm so depressed I act like it's my birthday every day" is just retarded. Depressed people aren't known for celebrating each and every day.

many folks tend to specialize in one area of Taylor's history (understandably!...)
dafuq? How much do you wanna bet 90% of their knowledge comes from "filling in the blanks" that don't actually exist? I know that biographers exist, but they typically focus on a whole person rather than one tiny part of their life. Taylor Swift is the queen of the basic bitches. She's just not interesting. Somehow, there are entire college courses on her. I could understand taking a course on someone like Michael Jackson, who actually had an interesting life and an impact on pop culture for more than half a century, but Taylor Swift? ngl the thread on the HBO Neverland """"""""""documentary"""""""""" may have me a bit MATI, but I find it hard to believe there's even enough substance to Taylor Swift to actually make a full college course out of.

This is such an interesting question.
Again due to swifties mostly being left wing in nature, and Elon making twitter more chuddy, can lead to a mass migration to another social media website soon. I doubt reddit would be a likely candidate. Remember; swifties are fucking normies. I’m pretty sure reddit would be too scary to use for them.

Bluesky isn’t popular yet. (compared to x or twitter) but I see swifties moving there to the future. Rather than reddit. Interesting points you made though.

Something that came to mind reading all of these "secret meanings" of Taylor's songs was "In the Air Tonight" by (the infinitely more talented) Phil Collins. There was an urban legend that the lines "If you told me you were drowning/I would not lend a hand/I've seen your face before, my friend/ but I don't know if you know who I am" referred to an actual experience Collins had of witnessing a man drowning while another man just stood by and watched. He said that he's frustrated by that legend because he doesn't know what the song is about. He was going through a divorce at the time and the words just flowed out of his brain. "Don't Lose My Number" is another song he just doesn't know the meaning of. When he was still making music, Phil Collins had a knack for just letting his brain string words together without even thinking about it. Stream of consciousness at its best. The defense I've seen from the people who unironically like The Tortured Poets Department is that it's stream of conscious. The album is "pure" Taylor. I have to wonder how she feels about the Gaylor crowd picking apart her songs and assigning meaning to them. There's so little substance to her lyrics and it's hard not to just take them at face value, but the Swifties will assign meaning (read: pull something out of their ass) to absolutely every word.

Hard work? lol Taytay didn't even have to get casting couch'd because mommy and daddy were behind her at every step with fistfuls of cash. Anyways 'The Man' by the Killers is the superior man song.

Not sure who would pay for taytay to get on a casting couch lol, best case senario she would end up being a suburban wine mom.

I remember I used to work with one of these weirdos. During her tour in 2023, he kept whining about not getting to see her concert.

Also, does anyone remember when people called 2023 "The Year of Taylor"?

Some people think reason the cult movement exists, is because Taylor Swift is an intelligence asset, they push her on purpose. And shes also a member of the Freemasons.

Some go even as far to say shes actually the daughter of Zeena LaVey
