Funny how this thread went from "Windows thread" to "Linux thread (Linux users trying not to talk about Linux in the Windows thread challenge (IMPOSSIBLE))" to "Enthusiast hardware questions" in like a span of two posts
Granted, I'm sure it's relatively easy to use Tiny11builder or whatever to create a streamlined Windows 11 build that works fine. I just don't care. It's 2K25 and I want out out out.
If you want to expand memory on a laptop so bad, HP elitebooks with 7th-8th gen intel cpu-s don't have soldered ram. Of course do your googling before you pull the trigger.
DDR4 SODIMM seems to have been hit especially hard by RAM price hikes and DDR4 production ending. But I've only been looking at 2x32GB kits so idk.

2 weeks before Windows 10's EOL, it looks like people started migrating... back to Windows 7?

If you're using an unsupported OS anyway you might as well use a good one. And if you're savvy you can install Windows Server 2008 R2 patches into Windows 7 to keep core components updated for a bit longer -- one released last month.
But why though? Does Windows 7 even work on a modern computer???
It's relatively easy to get going on AMD AM4 systems, some caveats with USB and needing to find the right drivers but people have made pre-bundled ISOs even. Omores got it going with 14th gen Intel:

Although he's managed to get even Windows 95 running on modern computers...

Biggest limitation is the graphics side, beyond RTX 3000 there's no drivers. But if you're happy with older games it's not really hard to find an older card for cheap.

Laptops are not a good idea, even if you can get it going the power management won't work properly -- I managed to get everything fairly good on a Coffee Lake era laptop but yeah battery life is horrible.

As for why personally I just wanted a version of explorer.exe that doesn't suck, other limitations are kinda not a big deal especially as VXKex keeps getting better.

Not that you should use it because I can't imagine it being stable with certain things but there is actually a project that tries to get the 7 explorer running under later versions. I think someone managed to also get the Vista explorer working with this?

edit: BTW @Slav Power if you mention the settings menu being the one thing Windows 11 did right I am going to get my dad to ban you from Xbox Live. I think it's less "desktop" like and more tablet like (where the previous iteration was more phone oriented) if that makes sense? Either way give me the old control panel nigger.

The intent of this project is to get the start menu and taskbar from Windows 7 running in Windows 11, not to replace the broken slow "working on it" piece of garbage React Native jeet file explorer.

I don't even mind the taskbar in Windows 10 or 11 and there have been ways to replace the start menu since Windows 8 came out.

who'd have thunk it.

Does anyone know if MS or game devs have any plans to make actual Windows 11 exclusive games? I fuckin hope not, I remember them saying 10 was gonna be the last one and I only put up with it for the best Forza Horizon 3 port. MS gonna lie
Nobody is planning to build and test against unsupported operating systems forever.

I feel so good having built my PC from the start with Windows 11. I love it. Does everything I want. It is time to upgrade fags. You are not immune to destiny:

And in 5 more years, you will be crying about leaving 11, because it fucking rocks.

If you have reading comprehension skills past 8th grade levels and are computer literate you can make your own Win11 ISO with all the bullshit ripped out. Once you do a local install you run Chris Titus's Windows Debloater to catch any other bullshit that got through and you're done. I've been using Win11Pro, activated with MassGrave's script, and updates shut off permanently for over a year without any issues. TPM 2.0 motherboards started coming out a decade ago, it's time to upgrade.

Suck my nuts. I'm sticking on 10 until every little bit of support for it is dropped bit by bit.
