The World Travel Thread

I've been all across Europe. Seen a lot of it.
Outside of that, I've been to the US, Israel and Palestine.

I'd love to see Vietnam, Australia and Mexico.

Oh man, I'd love to go to the Philippines. My wife is from there and I can't believe that we've been married for four years and I still haven't gone. *yawn*

But places I've been:

1.) Japan. I spent a summer semester of college as a student ambassador to the Osaka School of Arts and Music. I had a blast.

2.) Mexico. When I was in the Army, I got TDY orders to Fort Huachuca. I went on down to Nogales for a day to get some light shopping done. This was before you had to have a passport to enter Canada or Mexico. I miss those days. *SIGH*

3.) Kuwait. Military deployment.

4.) Iraq. The same military deployment. I was there during OIF I and saw action in the Sunni Triangle. AUGH YEAH

5.) South Korea. Military duty. I liked it so much I ended up extending my tour for another 18 months.

6.) The DMZ/Panmumjom. Doesn't really count as "North Korea," but I at least got to go to where all those cool photos are taken. I even got to see the Bridge of No Return.

7.) Australia. Took vacation to Sydney in February 2009.

8.) Thailand. Took a 48-hour MWR tour to Pattaya and Bangkok in October 2009.

9.) New Zealand. Took a week of leave to Auckland in November 2009.

Been through via travel, but doesn't really count: Dublin, Ireland; Bucharest, Romania; some tiny airport in Newfoundland, Canada.

While in the US, I've also had the pleasure of visiting Honolulu, Hawai'i; Fairbanks, Anchorage, and the Kenai peninsula of Alaska; Las Vegas, Nevada; Arizona; New Mexico; Texas; New Orleans, Louisiana; Arkansas; Mississippi; Alabama; Florida (including the theme parks); Georgia; South Carolina; North Carolina; Tennessee (including Nashville and the Grand Ol Opry); Kentucky; Oklahoma; Maryland; Virginia; and Washington DC.

I'm hoping to go to Toronto in the spring. I'd also like to go to England and Sweden someday. If I ever get good at Spanish and French (which I'm trying to study) I'm hoping to go to Spain and France.

If I ever want to take a 15-20 hour flight, I'd like to go to Australia. My aunt and uncle had a blast there a few years ago.

I've only been to Niagara Falls, Canada, and that was when I was six.

Word of advice, don't go to Adelaide. There is literally nothing to do there.

Traveling is pretty awesome, I really like it. It's a rather adventurous feeling to go beyond the usual tourist destinations and visit places where the locals never saw a single Westerner before. On my to-do list in terms of world traveling: a trip from Berlin to Siberia. This is a trip my great-grandfather was forced to make during and after the war, when he was a prisoner of both Hitler as well as Stalin. Ended up doing forced labour in a camp on the other side of the world, in temperatures so cold it gives you the shivers trying to imagine how it must have felt. It's a miracle he lived, especially considering how he came there with his brother and of all the inmates he befriended, he was the only one to return in 1953 upon Stalin's death. From what I heard his brother, my grandfather's uncle, died trying to escape the camp but the circumstances of his passing were too gruesome for my grandfather to repeat. In any case, the story has always impressed me and fascinated me. I want to walk where he has walked. See what he has seen.
Holy hell. It was horrible what your great grandfather went through, but at least he survived going to hell and back. I'm guessing he fought in the Dutch military, right?

The only country I ever visited was the Philippines. I guess I had around five to six trips there. All of it was as a small vacation for me and my mother, just going to her home country to see my relatives. All of my memories were being on the farm where my relatives lived in homes made of bamboo though a couple of them managed to live in a home made of cement. I only wish I could enjoy the visits more but I pretty much played vidya on my laptop and my Gameboy(back when I was just a little kid who never really played games on a computer). I'd love to go back but I would need to make sure I have good Tagalog and I should have a job to help them out since they all (or hopefully some) of them lost their home from a flood just like the people around them (they live near Olongapo City by Subic Bay.)

You guys had some pretty awesome trips.

Some of mine are the most touristy, obvious ones, like Orlando and New York. I did spent some time in Germany in the end of 2009 to visit relatives though, and I hope to do so again (I was in Essen and enjoyed the winter in Salzburg, Austria.) Recently however, I heard that my dad's cousin and his wive are fighting all the time and scaring their children, after my dad went to get Euros in the bank account he has in Germany. So I guess I'll have to wait to do that... :C :heart-empty: I also visited my uncle and aunt, and they had the best chocolate ever and spoke some good Portuguese (They visited Brazil numerous times). Sadly, they both died in the recent years. My aunt because of alcohol-related issues and my uncle of natural causes, but sadly with some depression caused by my aunt's death... :(

I also was in Argentina, the Patagonia to be exact. Pretty fun times.

For some reason, I am also going to Orlando again in a few days, so I won't post much in the near future because of that.

Anyway, I hope to not only visit major cities and stuff, I also like to go to places far from urban life to see how life is to a native. In Europe, Asia, Oceania... all continents. There is so much stuff in this Earth and I'd be damned to not experience it all during my time in this blue planet that we all live in.

I like travelling a lot, but I don't do it nearly enough. I've been to:
the Netherlands
Sweden (obviously, as I live there)
Germany
Denmark
Spain
Austria
Belgium
the UK, England and Wales specifically
California (pretty much all over the place, from Eureka and the red wood forest to San Diego)

I may also go to Japan at some point in the not too distant future as my brother is currently living there, but that's not really planned yet. I'd like to go though. I think it'd be interesting.

Besides China, I would also like to visit Jamaica and the UK, among other countries.

I've always wanted to go to Slovakia or Germany (one of my cousins has a girlfriend that grew up there) or something...

Only other country I've been to is Canada

I've been around the world, but by far my favorite place was Italy.

I've only been to Canada and it's pretty great.

I really want to go to Norway, Sweden, and Finland.

So, travel. We all do it at some point. Either by plane, car, train, or boat.

What's your preferred method? Any tips or suggestions?

I'm flying out on Friday with Southwest. Never flown with them so suggestions would be appreciated.

You made a good choice with Southwest. Also, never use Delta Airlines.

Da Pickle Monsta had a good suggestion once - wear khaki scrub pants if you're on a long flight because it's as comfortable as pajamas but it looks nicer

Delta hasn't been so bad for me. Frontier was the far worst I've flown with.

I love traveling, but international airline travel for several hours in economy seating is the worst. When I went to China years ago, I was stuck sitting in the same small, uncomfortable seat for 12 hours. I couldn't even sleep. I think first class would definitely be worth it if it's affordable.

The train to Toronto has wifi.
Except Toronto is hard to get around because there are only 2 subway lines in the whole city. Also don't walk through China Town because Toronto has crazy Chinese gangs (apparently)
Except the 4 times I've walked around the heart of Toronto I walked through China Town twice and I didn't die.
Also by the CN Tower is Ripley's Aquarium, which is a delightful aquarium. Toronto also has:
-The Royal Ontario Museum
-The CN Tower
-The Toronto Zoo (the best, and one of the most respected zoos in Canada along with The Calgary Zoo, I've been to both and Toronto has more smaller animals while Calgary has more larger animals)
-Canada's Wonderland (which is the MOTHER FUCKING TITS)
-The EX (seasonally)
-The Science Center
-Hockey Hall of Fame
-The only place in Ontario to see The Lion King musical when it comes to Canada

I haven't found it too bad...my longest trip was from Atlanta back to Johannesburg in 2010 - 25 hours on a Delta flight. Delta going internationally is not too bad. I have special circumstances I suppose, so they were super friendly at the check-in counter and made sure I was sitting at the bulkhead. I had so much legroom! It made the long flight more bearable. But I would definitely upgrade to first or even business class if I could afford it.

I much prefer flying overall even domestically. I really hate driving. I don't have much experience with trains for long distances at all; but I like our "high-speed" train that operates in my province. Hope you enjoy your flight!
