The World Travel Thread

I liked Madeira a lot. For a such a tiny island it has quite the contrasts: southern side is sunny and hot, while northern side is cloudy and cool. The mountains are not particularly high, but they touch the clouds, and I love fog, so hiking around them was just fantastic.

Gary Indiana is a massive shithole.
No, going to Chicago with Gary was awful. He ruined the whole trip.

I went to a place called the Pine Barrens in New Jersey when I was a kid. It was awful, at least where I was. Lots of areas surrounded by barbed wire fences and a polluted river is what I remember most. It has barren in the name, so not exactly the ideal vacation destination.

Edit: I also remember a road or walking path that was literally sand, not a dirt path but like heavy sand. I remember this distinctly because I was trying to ride my bike through it. I was very young when I was there.

Savannah, Georgia is one of the nicest places I've ever been to. Lots of beautiful old buildings and scenery. Really good food. Really, really, good food.

Turlock, California is shit. It's a barren hellscape where everything smells like onions. California's central valley is kind of nasty all around. A lot of barren hellscapes with a lot of weird smells. You can get some good fuckin Mexican food though.

I miss Denver, Colorado, and I wish I could go back. Denver was lovely when I had a layover there.

Never go to Baton Rouge, Louisiana. It's the State Capitol, yes, and it's also our murder, drug, and sex crime capitol.

COUNTRY REVIEW!
Canada - Nova Scotia was okay.
Mexico - Sucked. Don't drink any water that isn't in a sealed bottle.
South Korea - If you're over 6 foot, avoid any confrontation with the cops because they will use 5 guys to bring you to the ground even if you are cooperating.
Russia - The Taiga is amazing, Vulgagrad is impressive.
Germany - Everyone smells funny, literally everyone.
England - Outside of big cities is okay, but nothing special.
Wales - Fucking gorgeous.
Scotland - More gorgeous than Wales.
Japan - If you're tall and have long dark hair as a male, they assume you're a wrestler. Also the roads made me panic a lot.

England, Scotland, Wales, something's missing! Oh well.

Ireland's pretty and friendly, but very spaced out. You'll need a car as the transportation system needs work.

Northern Ireland is actually really nice and pretty too, feels different from ROI but don't bring up the troubles too much and some areas are places you'd probably not want to go to because of the politics and hostility. The transportation system (Translink) is pretty good and you can get to anywhere via bus or train by booking it online or having a card.

My favorite place that I've been to is Huntington, West Virginia. The town and surrounding countryside/mountains are beautiful, the people are nice, and I was actually able to walk around town at night and it was safe and I was for the most part completely alone. I went there for a metal concert about a year ago.
I've also been to rural Washington/Oregon to visit family and really enjoyed the small town/countryside scenery there.

My least favorite places were:
Atlantic City, New Jersey (really boring especially for a kid, and it's true that New Jerseyites are assholes)
Florida (too hot, too humid, went to the Universal Studios theme park as a kid and it was disappointing)
Maryland/DC/NoVA (overcrowded, crazy drivers, everything is expensive, DC at least has nice architecture and historical monuments)
New York City (traveled through a bad neighborhood and was afraid we were going to get mugged)

I've never been outside of the US before, but I'd like to one day. My parents traveled to Germany in the 80s and their stories of it sound interesting.

As suicidal as it may sound, I've always wanted to visit Afghanistan. Unfortunately, 40+ years of unending war make it highly unlikely that I'll ever be able to visit places like Mazar-i-Sharif, Kabul, Bamiyan, or Herat while I'm still young. A crying shame too, because Afghanistan has some of the richest culture and history of any region in the world. Then again, it's not like I'm out of options if I really want to experience a broadly similar culture. There's always Peshawar in Pakistan if I'm craving some old-school Pathan hospitality.

Anyone been to Mongolia in the last 10 years? Went earlier in my life and was wondering if it had changed as I might visit the Gobi Desert again on my Asia vacation circuit.
