The Writing Thread

I am not a professional writer by any stretch of the imagination, but for the last couple of years, I've had the itch to write a book that compares today's Cancel Culture/PC Left to the Religious Right of yesterday and drawing comparisons to how eerily similar the behavior patterns and attitudes are.

But that would require time for research, writing, and just trying to get the thing published, and that's time I don't have right at this moment.

Heck, by the time I got around to writing it, the PC Left will probably have faded and some other group of wackos will have taken their place.
Don't let your lack of experience stop you. If it's something that seems like it'll be dated before you can finish it, I'd recommend making it fiction that incorporates those ideas without necessarily having them be the entire focus of the book. That way you'll have something that can at least potentially outlive the expiration date of the social issues themselves.

Here is one of my short stories;

MAN: Oh, Honey! I came as fast as I could! Are you okay? What happened?
WOMAN: Just a little accident at work…
M: What happened!? Why are you here?
W: My tampon. It got stuck in my uterus.
M: How?
W: Does it matter?
M: What? Why shouldn’t it!? You’re at work, teaching kids, and suddenly I get a call at work telling me that you’re in the hospital. Now here you are, telling me that your tampon got lodged into your uterus and I’m supposed to believe that it’s ‘no big deal’? Come on! Something like that is no small accident!
W: Well, the doctor says I can be out of here by tomorrow, but he recommends that I take some time off work, for a month at least!
M: How did it happen?
W: You really want to know, Dear? Well here goes. Try dealing with a hyperactive kid that doesn’t pay attention in class, who throws tantrums, who only cares about cartoons, and doesn’t leave the class when you ask him to.
M: (…)
W: On top of all that, he runs around with poo running down his legs!!
M: Uh… I don’t understand.
W: Okay, ‘Dear’, let me spell it out for you! That brat kicked me in the crotch, putting me in here! Is that clear enough for you?

How do you share something you intend to publish without power leveling?
Share a tiny amount of it that you may eventually edit a bit to make less recognizable or publish under a pseudonym.

Currently writing a sci-fi short with the intent of selling it to a magazine or anthology. It'll focus on a certain Martian moon.

Does anyone agree that most characters lately have either faced hardships or had a tragic background? Not that it's a bad thing though. In fact, they help build a story.
The real trick is trying to do it correctly. A lot of modern writers use a tragic past as a crutch for lack of creativity or skill. Kinda like Rey in the new star wars movies.

I'm more inclined to a protagonist that has done bad or even terrible things learning to turn around, regret those mistakes and move forward. Though it's just personal preference.

Unpopular opinion but I don't think writing fanfiction is a bad thing. There are more bad fics than good ones, it's true since most of it is bad porn, but it does inspire people to get intro writing their own stories. I mostly draw but it's thanks to fanworks that I got into it in the first place.

Also I think most stuff suck these days because people are afraid of making complicated main characters. They're so bland and boring you end up relating to the bad guys because sometimes they've a good point but are wrong in the ways they want to achieve things. That's why I feel like main characters have to be flawed to be interesting, they can't be so pure and loyal that they're willing to sacrifice themselves for strangers, it's not realistic and I'm tired of it.

I might have to disagree a bit. A main character can be loyal and selfless enough to give their life for a stranger. You see plenty of that example in real life. What I think matters is how they're written. Are they fun or interesting to be around with, just so happen to be a jerk with some bit of heroism, or the bad case being devoid of any personality besides being "the good guy"?

I get what you mean but it's odd to me for a character to sacrifice everything for someome they don't have any connection with, especially when there are others that rely on them staying alive for something important. I feel like there has to be a good reason for a main character to give their life to make people relate because the average person is not willing to die for someone they bumped into on the street. Many will do their best to help during an emergency but even those that rescue people for a living want come out alive.

If I had to choose between a stuck up jerk with a heart of gold or a bad case bland personality with hero complex, I would put the book down and search for something else to read. It's not bad if the author intends to develop them as the plot progresses, throwing all kinds of lessons their way for them to learn, but not all know how to do it without turning preachy these days.

That's why I rather go for fun than preachy. Even in the fun, anything interesting can be shown. When it's preachy, it sucks away your investment in exchange for needless personal views of the author.

Not at all really, when you think that the art of writing is being able to convincingly convey an story in a captivating or amusing way, then it makes sense that like any other art form it would require a lot of actual practice beforehand.

No one ever remembers the other 80% so to speak.

As for the creation of complex characters, it is a difficult thing to approach especially if your writing for a particular genre because each of them have their own tropes that do color the experiences and the scope of the character. I personally like characters that aren't perfect or tragically flawed, but a bit of both. That makes for interesting reading, but there is often a reluctance to actually go there and write something like that.

I'd say as well wider media as a whole tends to suffer from this. There is a lack of experimentation that used to exist in forms of media, film, stories, etc.

The Psyche: Deep Cut

This is madness
I'm at my wits end
Ive lost my fucking mind
Yeah it's gone with the wind
You're cant begin
To comprehend
This state that I'm in
The rage will win
Crescendo of the hate within
A spiteful hymn
Rife with sin
Gotta hit the bowl again
'Cause if I dont smoke up
I'll choke up
In the fetal position
The curse of intellectual mind..
You understand the insignificance
Of humankind
You struggle to find
Any meaning behind
The rhymes
Time and time again
I try
but time flys
Passing me by
Last in line
To the house of the blind
Bearing witness to this social decline
It's got me all fucked up
I don't know how to cope
Throw me a bone
Better yet, throw me a rope
Let's change the tone
Play something that can give me some hope
Or at least something to help me forget the grander scope..

The only way to numb the nihilism is with pretty melodies and groovy rhythms...
Not that it can stem the tide...
Even the best songs end,
And when they do reality sinks back in
It's an insane world in which we reside...

I try to keep it up beat
Even though the world around me is rusting
At least then it doesnt seem so ugly..

They say beauty's in the eye of the beholder
But I cant grasp the aesthetic with these demons on my shoulders
Heavy as boulders
As I grow older the smoldering cold from their talons
Sink deeper Into my soul
Until order
Yeah, well that's just another face for chaos
Yin and yang dont mean shit since theres no payoffs
It's all greek to me
Shit reeks
So Imma take off
I got some bad thoughts to shake off
I try pick up my guitar but it feels all wrong
What little inspiration remained: Now long gone
Silence
My new favorite song
It's stuck in my head
Looping on and on and on
So I'm just hanging with white noise dressed in black attire
Swaying to the somber tones of a mute choir
Waiting for a spark to rekindle the fire
But it's too late, my ambition's already on the pyre.

The only way to numb the nihilism is with pretty melodies and groovy rhythms...
Not that it can stem the tide....
Even the best songs end
And when they do reality kicks back in
It's an insane world in which we reside

Though I try to keep it up beat
The world continues rusting..
I just wish it wasn't so ugly...

I just wrote this story with the Replika chatbot.

My friend shared this image with me. For context Finnish reindeer herder's are painting the antlers of their deer so drivers can see them better in the dark.

Me: "I love this! He looks like a king of the old forest!"
Him: "That sounds like a writing prompt."

Immediately, I felt a spark. I didn't know what to write yet but I knew I had to give this King of the Old Forest breath!

After three scrapped attempts with wildly different perspective, setting and tone, I think I have something worth expanding on.

I am an aspiring fantasy author with an interest in folklore and fairies, feedback helps me. Please review:
