This is similar to my thoughts on ASMR. I actually use these videos on a regular basis to help me get to sleep. It's one of those things that you can't necessarily explain in words. When I hear certain sounds or see specific visuals I get incredibly relaxed. The how and why of this is actually difficult to study in a scientific sense as so much of the experience is abstract and varies from person to person. It's speculated that there is some kind of sexual basis to it due to the universal theme of whispering (people often whisper/use a breathy voice during sex which instinctively helps humans relax into the experience), but ASMR itself isn't intended to be sexual and never is for me. Still, I think the nature of whispering and its constant presence are what gives off the porn vibes in these videos. Also the constant close-ups which seem to be a result of the ASMR tradition where you set up your bianural microphone below or behind the camera.

ASMR reminds me of hypnotism more than anything else. You're encouraged to focus on a singular voice, a repetitive noise, and the visual "triggers" often induce a sort of trance-like state. It's similar to those relaxation/guided therapy tapes that have been around since forever or a white noise machine.

Still, the community is chock-full of some weird characters and videos. I've found one or two people who make consistently good videos and are, from what I've seen, pretty sane. I hardly (if ever) venture outside of these accounts because when ASMR goes crazy it quickly goes really fucking crazy. Even my preferred channels are not without the odd video that makes me wonder how in god's name they came up with the idea.

Wow. I nearly forgot about these. Am I the only one that gets a near sick-like aversion on some of these? Like the constant lip smacking sounding like someone is eating with their mouth open and it's pretty disgusting.

I'm another ASMR-sensitive Kiwi. I too have had weird reactions to certain voices, noises (happened a lot in grade school) and never knew why until relatively recently.

That said, some of the primary ASMR triggers (whispering ear to ear into a binaural mic) are awful to me. I don't know if it's overload or just something that rubs me the wrong way, but I hate that shit.

Basically, like everything else on the internet, ASMR is a lovely little curiosity that has been blown up into an overtly toxic community of sexual deviants and assholes.

There are lots of non-verbal ASMR videos out there, but they tend to be less popular.
I myself get the effect from ratcheting sounds.

I had this problem too. I tried to watch a couple of the videos and had to shut them off because they made me physically uncomfortable. Especially the one with the "ear cleaning", just thinking about it grosses me out.

I'm a Kiwi who enjoys ASMR too. My favorite triggers to relaxation are computer typing, page turning, and pencil writing. People's actions in the videos aren't even that interesting to me; I just like the sounds. WhisperCrystal is my favorite whisperer, but I think she abandoned the internet a long time ago. The autism in the ASMR community probably explains why she left.
