Today I met an Irish wolfhound for the first time.

A friend had me run him out to a particular shop, and while I was waiting for him outside an old man walked past with his Irish wolfhound. I've never seen a wolfhound irl before, and old mate was was generous enough to let me pat his large, wiry friend. The wolfhound's coat felt exactly the way I thought it would, but I was amazed at how heavy and powerful skull and muscles were. I'd always thought that wolfhounds were built like greyhounds, but they are much more solid, more like a ridgeback or great dane. The wolfhound also leaned against me exactly the way a great dane would, which was delightful.

Eventually, old mate had to move on and I had to say goodbye to my new friend. But it was a wonderful encounter, both heart warming and educational.

I found out on my ride to work that my bike brakes aren't working , the registers were barely functional when I got there and we were struggling to take payments (on Memorial Day weekend no less) somebody died on a nearby sidewalk and so there's a police blockade in the middle of a busy sidewalk around the body, and I forgot my fork so I had to eat my salad with my hands.

But the weather is beautiful today!

Today I just got back from two fireworks display (It will downpour tomorrow so some places decided to do it a day early) and it was a nice white pill. Everyone who came to the country club was not only White but fairly young/middle aged and brought there large family of kids there. the fireworks show was good too. Then I walked to an auto repair shop that was shooting off fireworks and it was good too. If you think there is no hope there is. There is something here worth fighting for.

In my country, there's something called the Lifeline Bookfest. Lifeline is a "charity" organisation, and in various large population centres, they will hold massive secondhand book sales. I haven't been able to go for a lot of years for multiple reasons, and I was really excited to get the opportunity to finally go today.

I saved my spare cash for months, prepaid my parking, and marched in all excited... the first thing I saw was a separate comic book section. Holy shit, that's awesome! Unfortunately, after that initial burst of optimism, things went rapidly downhill. The whole point of Bookfest is to score bargains. Instead, it appears that the same malaise that has crippled Australian op shops has struck the Bookfest, and that's items being priced in line with online shopping costs. Many people have stopped going to op shops because there's no fucking point anymore. If a no name pair of jeans costs $30 in an op shop, you may as well go to Kmart and get a brand new pair for $35. It's additionally galling because all the items in op shops- and the Bookfest- are donated. People donate to help others, but those others can't afford to buy these donated items. There's nothing quite like being told that op shops are helping the less fortunate when you pick up an item and think, "WTF didn't I see this brand new at the shops yesterday for two dollars less? I'm here because I'm broke and need cheap shit. I can't afford this."

Likewise the Bookfest: everything was massively overpriced, it was insane. The lowest cost section was the $2.50 per book area, but despite being physically large, the selection was completely piss weak and rescued from the paper recyclers. When I moved into the high cost section, that was when I started to find the titles and genres that I was after, all massively overpriced. I picked up multiple common editions with covers and pages ripped off, slapped with $8 or $9 price tags because they were somehow "high quality". And on top of all this, some annoying twat on the PA system wouldn't shut the fuck up or at least turn the fucking sound down to a bearable level. It was excruciating.

The whole event was distinctly under attended compared to the years when I'd last gone. The tag line is, "Grab a bargain!" but there were no bargains to be had. Because I can't be trusted around a book sale, yes, I did buy some volumes. But I honestly can't see myself going back to another Bookfest until these "charities" wrap their heads around the concept that continuously raising prices to make up for dropping sales is exactly why sales are dropping.

I'm pretty convinced that there is some serious money laundering going on in these organisations. The product is free, the labour is free, the locations are discounted and tax free, there's a ton of financially stressed people who are desperate for affordable items...

...yeah.

Today I went to the hospital for a check up. While I was waiting for my turn, I saw a poster attached near the entrance of the reception:

"The patients that don't wish to be called by their name have to alert the secretary".

And I'm like WTF. Why shouldn't you want to be called by your name? Are you in witness protection? I forgot to to ask the doctor, but I couldn't help wondering about it while I was returning home.

Nearly avoided getting in a car accident tonight and possibly death, glad I'm alive.
We're glad too. Rome needs you.

Today I slept in, woke up, realised that I'd finished this week's chores bar one, ate breakfast, had another nap, and now I'm clearing up my unread threads list before I do the final chore and make dinner for tonight. Scintillating stuff.

Today I have been thinking hard over the last couple of days as to why I didn’t take chemistry as seriously as I used to when I was in high school. Now, fast forward to today, I’ve been doing nothing but researching courses and re-teaching myself the basics of chemistry as another add on for a hobby.

Me: the forecast for today says "slight possibility of a small shower". I'm going to do all my laundry and hang it out. A few rain droplets won't make too much of a difference to drying time. If I get everything hung out early I can relax for the day, and bring everything in when it's dry.

Sky: starts pissing down at midday and doesn't stop.

Fml.

I consoled myself by covering the living room in spiders. So that was fun. I tried to prank the housemate by hiding one under his keys, but he didn't bat an eyelash.

Maybe I should swap the plastic spiders out for real ones. I evicted a huntsman the size of my palm from our bathroom a ways back. Decent size, although I've seen bigger.
