It's probably some combination of social promotion and watered-down expectations/grading requirements. As an example of the latter, a teacher friend of mine taught a first year science class one particular year and the requirements for full credit on a lab assignment were ridiculously easy. Despite that, many students got marked down for partial or no credit for the various line items simply because they couldn't follow the simplest of directions. They're all shit, and I honestly don't know how some of these kids graduated high school.
I remember when I took Biology 101 at university, and early on in the semester they sent us away in groups to write assignments, and then told us to grade each other's assignment. The assignment I graded was great... as long as you read it phonetically. Read literally it was nightmare, and I basically had to read the thing aloud so I could hear it and not beat my brain bloody against the unholy mess of homophones fornicating amidst the wholesale suicide of basic grammar. When I handed this girl's assignment back it was basically a sheet of red pen marking the errors and she was utterly shocked and horrified. What I couldn't figure out was how she'd managed to get all the way into university without realising that she was fucking awful at the English language.Today, I learned that the packages I sent to Canada at a client's request spent 9 days doing nothing from the time they cleared customs to the time they were eventually shipped to their next destination. It took nearly 2 weeks total for them to arrive to their final location's post office early this morning. Thank goodness nothing being sent was too time-sensitive.

At the college level, I took a couple of classes where the weekly assignments were as much a lesson in following directions as it was learning the subject material. It was truly eye-opening to learn how many classmates were on the pass-fail borderline all semester because they couldn't or wouldn't pay attention to the directions.
Mate, try living with it packed away for a while and see if you miss it. And chances are... you won't. Maybe a favourite piece here and there you'll want to dig out and keep, but by and large, you will feel free like you never have before. All that exceptional junk I've ever bought over the years? Both what I've shared with you all and what I haven't over in the autistic purchases thread? It's been packed up and put away.
