Trolling Ethics Debate Thread

The absolute worst thing you can do when being bullied is take the bait. If you ignore the people attempting to rile you, they'll just go find someone else. I was never bullied in school for multiple reasons, but mostly because I didn't give a shit. If someone said "You're gay" or something, I'd just say "Yep, I'm a massive gay". Imagine if Chris said "Yeah you're right guys, I'm gay. I love dick, give me the dick!" instead of the overly-physical revulsion he felt even attempting to even say the word? People wouldn't give a shit. If he'd have just said from the start "Yeah, my comic is shitty, but whatever. I'm going to do it anyway, say what you want" then none of this would have happened. His massive overreaction and tard rages are the whole reason we're even discussing him.

All true but Chris is an adult and a higher functioning one than he usually gets credit for being. He just has a lot of personality flaws that don't help.

If he chooses to react in a belligerent in way, it makes him a better trolling candidate. No one's picking on a defenseless moron here.

I don't know that he's not intelligent, more that he has absolutely no smarts. We all know the supreme irony of his hatred of the word naive given that he is the ultimate mark. He lives in self-enforced ignorance, a product of living in his own sheltered little world for too long. This means he can trick himself into believing whatever he wants as long as it fits the narrative he's given his life. Given the right environment, he could have been relatively normal.

Of course, you can say that his extraordinary levels of naivety add up to lack of intelligence, but I feel a little uneasy to directly call it that. It's a complicated issue.
The reason people say Chris is dumb is because he's particularly bad at deductive reasoning (among other things). He also seems to be capable of learning, but only slowly with lots of repetition. He also can't always see the big picture. He's okay at following instructions and is more motivated to learn if its something he's interested in though.

As the saying goes "there are lots of types of intelligence". And on most of those scales, Chris does fairly poorly. He is not creative, he is not good at logical reasoning, he is not well-read or at all knowledgable about anything, he is not musical, he is terrible at interpersonal skills.

I have always interpreted his memory and memorization ability to be half-decent, just weighed down by the fact that he actively fights against it by blocking things out.

Really what has happened is not really moral or ethical but I think all of us know that which is why most of us (I hope) don't go spouting off about Chris to our friends and the like. Looking back it was pretty silly to think the trolls were kind of cool when really most of them were/are trollshielding hate filled hypocrites. Anyone that feels like they're justified to torment Chris because his world view wasn't up to par with modern standards (He's racist, sexist, ect..) is either desperate for a reason they're not an asshole or really doesn't understand how fucked up Chris's mind is. All that said I'll still laugh at and read the articles and watch the videos but I'm not going to pretend it's all harmless fun. I'm an asshole I laugh at asshole things nuff said.

Many people in this thread say something like this. But I doubt many (or probably any) of those people genuinely believe it.

Everyone has some sort of morals. The only way people keep from going crazy with guilt for their actions is that they somehow have to convince themselves that their actions are "OK". That could entail a complex system of morality for the world. Or it can be as simple as saying "oh, well, I didn't know any better at the time...". (Which is an OK answer sometimes.)

Saying "pfft, fuck it, I'm an asshole!" is a non-answer to the ethics question, because people who say it don't actually believe it. Somehow they feel comfortable enough to browse this site. Somehow all of us are justifying our presence on this site to ourselves. That's what this thread is about.

Sometimes a non-answer is the closest thing to the truth. Spade is a spade an asshole is an asshole.

Eh... but it's not really saying anything useful.

It's not "I'm an asshole because...", it's "fuck it, no point in discussing the specifics, we're all equally assholes!"

Never said we all are I don't deal in blanket statements. I myself come here to laugh at people who really never asked for any of this. Others could be here to analyze and figure out what went wrong. All those reasons are valid. Life's too short to rationalize everything because by the time you do you find out you could have spent your time doing so much more with your short time.

Oh, certainly, I'm sure we look assholish to the world at large. But this thread is for discussion between ourselves.

We're discussing aren't we? :). Come on give me a hug Marvin its been about 3~ years (Or I may just have you mixed with Compy)!

@Thetan : I'm not complaining about "new" Chris content, but the way you've obtained this (and pretty much everything you've done) is a little disturbing. How much time have you spent talking to Chris from different personas, wether it be made up ones, or tricking him into thinking you're a gal pal or someone from his past? I know everyone has already expressed their opinions about you in the trolling ethics thread, but now we've seen yet another person from Chris's past that you're imitating. It's one thing to be someone new like Renee or Rebeckah. But how can you feel comfortable knowing that you've impersonated gal pals, and people he went to school with, along with finding all the information that goes into impersonating these people? Not to mention, you made a fake facebook of someone from his past, and that must have required some research as well as making it convincing. If I didn't know better, I would have thought that was actually a high school "friend" that Chris knew.
It's ironic that you try to help him with your trollsonas, but I think you've done more damage to him, impersonating the gal pals and then this person. I mean, look how devastated he was from the fake gal pal correspondence. That ruined him. He held on to that moment and you took it from him, not to mention leaving the rest of the community in the dark. I wouldn't have an issue with you if you just straight up said "yeah, I like to fuck with Chris, and I'll do anything to obtain information." but instead, you do this under a veil of "trying to help him". That might be your humanitarian persona, but what about shit like this?
If you like to pretend to be different people just so you play puppet master with an autistic man, you are not a saint.

I'm not going to get into too much detail because there's a Trolling Ethics Debate Thread for that.

I never claimed to be a saint or to have purely altruistic intentions regarding my interactions with Chris. I merely wanted to see if Chris would listen to good advice. I wanted to see if Chris were capable of turning himself around and making something better of his life. As I've said before, I was so focused on the question of ***if*** this ***could*** be done that I never really stopped to consider the consequences (if this ***should*** be done). I wanted to see if I could be the one who could finally talk some sense into him (yeah, a bit egotistical of me).

I didn't spend any real time researching anything. I mainly used Chris's friends only FB posts as a guide.

With the exception of the gal pals, I stand by all of my interactions with Chris: I never set out to [deliberately] hurt him, or get him to make an ass of himself. I offered him what I thought was good, solid advice and I encouraged him without ass-patting him.

In relation to the emails you've just posted though, you said you defriended him on facebook. So, does that mean that you created a fake facebook for this person? That's what I meant by the research, if you found someone from MHS and found out enough about him to sound convincing to Chris.

What did @Thetan take from Chris?

Don't you see, though? That's clearly what Thetan did wrong, and therefore, what Bronchitis That Lingers is unhappy about.
