Rate me late, I just realized that the panda is plagiarizing Ranma 1/2, another poster child anime for tumblrites.

Coco is definitely a beautiful film, but in regards to Turning Red they were at least pretty open about it being a Japanese homage to the likes of Ghibli. I don't know why Luca had to look the way it did though.

I was actually thinking of how much the main brat of this looks suspiciously like Taiko from Studio Ghibli's Only Yesterday. Which also had a little scene about girls learning about periods and also is a nostalgic look back at the 1960s Japan when she was growing up.



Taiko also had moments where she went old anime style when she was thinking about becoming a popular actress. As a homage to that time period's art.



Of course, Turning Red isn't trying to be Only Yesterday, but considering the anime influences and the memberberries about a different time period, it feels like this was taken as an influence on top of the rest. The major difference being that Only Yesterday never did any historical revisionism (troon kids, diabeetus patch before its time, twerking, etc.) and told a hell of a better story.

I dunno, I thought it was a wholesome film for teenage girls about family values and friendships. Didn't see any pedo shit or trans characters everyone is upset about.

There is backlash around a review which said this movie was made only for Domee Shi and her friends. That review got pulled down but it's essentially correct. This is a woman who has only story boarded for Pixar on Inside Out, Incredibles 2 and Toy Story 4. She had help writing the script but this is her black tank top movie, to quote RLM. She designed it from her childhood memories, AKA an Asian-Canadaian growing up in Toronto, added some bullshit mysticism that any mainland Chinese person was call her Gweilo because she uses her panda form to attract the actual Gweilo to the shrine.

Was the review pulled from Rotten Tomatoes? Because there is no point for the backlash, the flick was indeed made for the Director herself, and the movie doesn't try to shy away from that, even if you don't know a thing about the background of this show, anyone can tell what the movie is about the filmaker, it is the animated version of that "Ladybird" movie.

And again, nothing wrong with a self-indulgent project, but you know, you gotta be interesting for the rest of us to get into it as well, otherwise it is hard to get past the obvious "Yes, we know this is about you" barrier.

And also there is a issue with 2nd gen immigrants in the west, or even people who came as infants, more so with asians one, there is this obnoxious overcompensation about their heritage. They grow up in the west, they consume the same shit as everybody else, they want to fit in, but at the same time they seem terrified to be seen as one of "the whities", so they can get really on the nose and abnoxious about their "culture", and how magical and great and proud it is, even if they barely speak chinese/korean/etc, and have been back to their "motherland" a couple of times top.

And the sad thing is, the people who give these guys most shit ain't them whities, but also other Asians that call them Gweilo, because they ain't "authentic" enough, hence we have try-hard movies like this.

If anyone can speak chinese, is it possible to check how the reception of this movies is getting over there, I'm curious to see how are taking it.

I really fucking hate that the film low-key associates popularity with puberty.

I don't know about you but I can safely say that puberty is easily one of the hardest, frustrating, most socially devoid parts of a young girl's life. Your childhood friends suddenly start acting bitchy, your body is being weird, boys either make a fuss over you or call you a slut, etc. And you're super focused on being like the "popular girls" with perfect bodies and into all the latest trends. It's absolutely miserable. Even worse if you find yourself only slightly socially behind other people.

But no. Mei's a panda and she LIKES it! Everyone loves her. She's the most popular kid in school! Isn't that fun? Isn't it great, kids!

There's a reason why girls are trooning out so much these days. The physical and social pressure of puberty really takes a toll on them. Many feel lonely and isolated among their peers. The last thing they need is some try-hard pedo-bait film telling them that the most important thing about puberty is monetizing their body and image for fame and recognition amongst their peers. And to tell their parents to fuck off while they're at it (yes the mom is smothering but what do you want to bet dumb kids will think that about their ordinary normie mom regardless) That's a really shallow, harmful sentiment when I really think about it.

Well, the movie ain't "bad" per si, it does everything a movie has to do, and it also does get some points by playing some of the "NPCs" favorite points, so a lot of the "critics" go with the safe "it's okay" rate, and since that is all that it takes to get the fresh tomatoe, them you have a fresh ratting with a bunch of "c+".

That is pretty much how the mainstream critics are operating right now, not that "Turning Red" is "woke" or anything (it is very Burbank animation tough), but any heavier criticism of their themes or the people involved with the production can indeed bring a backlash a whole lot of headache (heck, a guy just said here that one of the reviews was taken down), so they slap a "C+" as a "please leave me alone".

The audiences don't have much of this burden, and so the issue with self-indulgent film making, a heavy handed metaphor and a forced emotional apeal that just doesn't manifest makes it's way to the public's perception, this sort of thing is hard to pull it off and you can't fake it like "Turning Red" does because people, even if they can't elaborate it, they can pick on what's genuine and what is fake.

Case in point:

You know what the biggest thing separating old Pixar from nu-Pixar? Teenage human (or humanoid) protagonists that are meant to be “relatable” to the target audience.

Not to suggest that it’s a hard rule or anything, but the earlier Pixar movies all either feature non-human protagonists, or adults as the main characters. Post-2010 though, all of their human MC’s with the exception of Soul have been kids or teenagers, and there have been a LOT more movies with human MC’s - the only non-sequels to star non-human main characters are The Good Dinosaur (which co-stars a human child) and Inside Out (whose “human” side of the story occupies like half the movie).

Like, if you’re telling a good story, your characters don’t NEED to look like you and live the same lives as you to be relatable. Ratatouille manages to have relatable characters despite the vast majority of the audience being neither a rat nor a French chef.

I agree, but I enjoyed the movie despite not being a tiny Chinese girl with a boy band obsession. Or a red panda for that matter. As far as you know

I’m not a fan of the ending for the mom she should have accepted her red panda side! Same for the rest of her family Pixar has put out better movies but I think this new film is a change of pace so hopefully that means better future ones.

Yeah I was fully expecting the mum to be on board. Not really a dealbreaker just feels a bit odd considering her and Mei both seemed to see eye to eye at the end.

A friend of mine that saw it really liked it and wants to show me it sometime. He was like "the animation's actually really expressive and it's one of the better pixar movies of the last 10 years" more or less. I don't think it's gonna be THAT good but the fact that he actually liked it despite the grubhub-esque people and horny clickbait shit surrounding this movie it kinda gives me a bit of hope. He somehow didn't know about the early 2000s time setting or the fact it took place in canada till seeing it though which is interesting to me considering that's like one of the first things I found out other than the grubhub ass art.

I don't remember pixar doing existentialism with kids constantly? Did these people fucking forget the kid from monsters Inc., the one from UP or like literally any kid character from the other pixar movies? Even the kids from the original Toy story?

Like quality of the recent 2 pixar movies aside, the grubhub looking artstyle they've been doing for their human characters clearly invokes apex predator hunter killer level reactions in people and I can see why looking at this image.

Well, I would say to not take these twitter stuff to much into consideration, I don't think even the people who claim to "ship" or want characters to be gay actually want it, all feels performative for internet likes, more so when kids do it.

Even so, it also shows that people who want these characters to be gay didn't even pay attention to the story, one of the main aspects of these girls is that they are the typical "boy crazy" early teens, and not just to the pretty boys in the boy bands, but older boys working on the local market and even doing some cat calling on their school's baskeball team.

Like I said, the best thing about this movie it is how it depicts puberty, something that I don't quite recall Disney movies doing it, and it ain't just about the metaphorical panda, but it shows that these girls hormones are going overdrive and they are noticing, and wanting to know more about boys.

And in the case of the protagonist, this behaviour is one of the many things that put her into conflict with her mother, the main drive of the story, and during the climax she even shouts "I like boys" to afront her mother.

Really, the protagonist being heterosexual is one of the main things about the movie.

But like I said, people saying they want more "gays" and "trans" characters don't even like or pay attention to the shows they claim to love, they just want to say that they want their "ships".

And even that I doubt it is genuine, if you want gay characters in animation, you do have quite a bit of shows that are already doing that, and yet when you take a look at these people favorite shows, it is always some anime where pretty boy stays with pretty girl.

For what it's worth, there's as much pushback on the "they should've been gay" side of things as there is for the reverse. Mei and Miriam weren't the intended gay couple imo, it's the Indian girl and that one chick at the party.
