I have considered in the past 'why didn't anyone look into Judge Chupp before this?' but hindsight is 20/20 and you can always make Nostradamus look right. If anyone looked into Chupp's history, they'd see that he is generally rated as 'excellent' and that he had a few appeals in his past. People would then respond to those appeals with 'we don't know the details of why Chupp ruled that way' and 'most judges have some appeals'. It's confirmation bias to look at the information now and see that it aligns with how he behaved in this case and say "Oh, we should have known."
According to everything I've heard, the only lawyer who had experience with Chupp in the past is Vic's new lawyer, who was advising Ty on how to behave with Chupp and could be argued as the person who helped Ty turn things around by the end of the hearing. The other lawyers didn't 'know how to behave', they just got lucky in that his sloppy courtroom behavior ended up in their favor. As Nick said, he ignored the law and screwed them over, too. It was just a net positive for them that he did, so they're not talking about it. Expecting Ty to be prepared for Chupp's behavior is just dumb. Even if he did the research up to and including knowing that Chupp's previous decision was overturned that week and so Chupp would likely be in a bad mood, no one would be able to know that Chupp's bad mood would turn against Ty. The defense had a bunch of crap they wanted to run that they weren't allowed to, as well. He could just have easily slapped them down instead and levied sanctions or something against them without letting them defend themselves from it.
I don't think Ty currently needs an appreciation or a criticism thread. It's too early in the case, and pretending it's 'lost' or anywhere near over is stupid. At best, it's heading toward a lull. Assuming that the defendants don't get bored and then go insane in the lull just to prevent it from going slower. But even had Ty been successful on all counts, it still would have gone into a lull period.
