Undertale

Watching eagerly. Apparently it's going to be able to talk (which knowing Toby, will probably just be the sound he makes when he's talking in game). Let's hope I get to buy one of these before all the scalpers/horny fangirls get to it first.

Warning: this post is mildly autistic, typed it in a bit of a rambling fashion, but I had some thoughts about Toby's games I wanted to articulate.

The easiest way I've been able to convey why I like Toby's work (and also Mario RPG) is that they understand comedy (specifically timing and the role of surprise) and put it before everything else while always fully comitting to the bit, even if said comittment requires a ton of new art assets. Most other 'funny' rpgs won't take the time to draw the conveniently shaped lamp or dangling dog sprite but Toby always does, usually in a completely unpredictable way.

The only thing I hate more than Undertale fanboys are the people that hate the game because of said annoying fanboys and/or because the game is/was popular (Me? Suggesting someone hating a game for the sake of clout? Never...)

Both extremes annoy the hell out of me. To both I say "Its just a harmless indie game, son, relax."

This is all very interesting, but how does this relate to the thread?
Toby is a badass man.

Found this wacky drawing on DA, so decided to post it here because it was probably not bad enough for the Deviantart Horrors thread.

Pure, distilled autism. You could bottle the stuff and sell it as a bioweapon material.

I'm not going to be all misery guts but adding more cooks to the kitchen is a potentially dangerous move.
One of the best parts of UNDERTALE was that it was a very clear vision. I'm not accusing Toby Fox of being unable to assert his vision to a large team but what I AM saying is that DELTARUNE is a lot more "off model" than UNDERTALE.
And yes I know perfectly well that the art in UNDERTALE was all over the place with parts of Mother 3 and Greeny Phatom awkwardly mashed together but it had a consistent STYLE which DELTARUNE is really pushing against

tl;dr
If they fuck up the scene where Mike goes to the dark world carnival and faces his fears at the ring toss I will personally kill every single one of them and that's a promise.

When I say "off model" I specifically mean that a lot of the guest art clashes.
Kanotyne's original designs look kind-of off but since UNDERTALE was directly inspired by them (and the designs are consistent over a full area) it mostly fits in well. Mallus looks pretty out of place though.
gigi's art blends in REALLY fucking well but she was a direct inspiration too.
Nelnal's art both clashes and doesn't. He has this funky style which is actually quite close to Temmie's (and I vastly prefer) but Sweet Cap'n Cakes totally stand out. Cap'n looks like Numbuh 1 from KND, Sweet looks like a binome from Reboot and K_K reminds me of this apple character from a disturbing marketing campaign for the UK equivalent of Fruit Roll-Ups. I'm wondering if Nelnal actually referenced a bunch of western cartoons for inspiration (Although K_K was almost certainly based on something else).
Brotoad's art sticks out a lot. It really doesn't look UNDERTALE-y and is pretty much just his regular drawing style verbatim. The faces in particular are a dead giveaway and are very different to the rest of the characters, even the other guest designs.

There's also a few pieces of dialogue that make me think "Did Toby write this?".
Can't find a screenshot and all the LPers on youtube seem to miss this but one of the people in the City Hall has a very suspect line about what's in his briefcase.

Honestly I just rolled with it for E2 because it's supposed to be the internet so throwing a blatant reference to binomes and clashing styles all mashed together is perfectly fine because that's how the internet is a lot of the time. It'll be a much tougher sell if that continues into 3.

IMO the best thing that could be done is applying some of the kingdom hearts production guide rules. If there's going to be a variant style, writing or otherwise, fence it entirely into its own zone, and let Toby and Temmie handle everything in the real world part so it can be coherent and sensible to contrast with the unpredictability of the other worlds. The real word needs to stay sensible and coherent to build up the narrative for the inevitable boundary break in the third act when we get all the info on what's really going on with Kris and things really go bad.

New update just dropped:

Will upload screenies later when the site isn't having a wobbly.

Krusie is seemingly confirmed in a very high profile way but I'm wary of that naughty dog.
Also note that all the Krusie screenshots are from Chapter 4 as listed in the filenames.
