Valve monetizes mods (With Bethseda Launcher and Open Beta for Modding Released, Possible Return?)

You know I thought payed mods were the worst valve could do. Apparently I have little imagination

As much as I don't play much multiplayer games, even those into a single player game can see how flawed that sort of system is. Unless there are consequences for devs that abuse the ban system, things aren't going to be good for players that aren't actually breaking the rules. Sure it is to crack down on abusive users but there are users that will try to put a spin on those they want banned just to justify banning the guilty party that actually didn't do anything wrong.

Monetizing mods has to be the dumbest thing Valve has done to Steam. It defeats the purpose of modding IMO.

I was actually pretty impressed, though, that they realized it was stupid and backed off on it for the moment.

I don't think monetizing mods is the problem if they're actually worth buying and can be supported. But it shouldn't be the default model. Part of the reason mods have been free is because they're inherently derivative of the intellectual property of others. If someone is actually making a profit off these derivative products, it should only be with the consent of the original IP holder, who should get a reasonable cut.

The 75% to Valve shit was clearly not that.

And this was also a good reason you don't just dump a gigantic change like this on your customers without even airing it beforehand, because if anyone outside the room who wasn't smoking whatever crack they were on when they made this decision heard about it, they'd have said basically what the public said when this was unveiled, which was are you out of your fucking mind?

The Valve snack bar doesn't pay for itself.
FIFY. Seriously though, be it Valve or Bethesda, the snacks aren't free and for the former, Lord Gaben and his team will want more giant pink frosting cookies.

I don't see it being an issue as long as it isn't abused.
oh you know it's going to be abused.
trolls will get random people banned for lulz
random people will lose to other people and get them banned

Regardless of your stance on paid mods, can we all agree Arthmoor is kind of a dick?

TB made a video interview with the guy that runs the Nexus and a veteran modder:

Its an interesting listen, although they all agree that Valve and Bethesda royally fucked up with how they went about this.

I liked the interview and I thought everyone brought good points except when the modder insisted that the community that was "bitching" was a mob that doesn't even play the game and there is a "true" modder community that actually works in mods while the others only reap the benefits. It looked that he really wanted a implementation of paid mods but regardless of his feelings of Valve screw job, but feels desingenious to say that everybody in the "working" mod community was in wait and see mod or that there is no legit anger by PCgamers.

It will be abuse if it's not well managed. i.e. bans shouldn't be based on a bunch of people voting to have someone banned. I used to be a role-player in World of Warcraft, so I encountered my fair share of griefing. I think some minor bans were handed out, but it was never taken that seriously. In the end we found some ways to make those bans longer, and in some cases permanent. My favourite was to casually let slip that I was in some kind of minority, such as making them think I was black or gay. Idiot trolls would think I had just given them ammunition. In reality their use of those slurs would mean the ticket got a bit more attention. I'd only bother using that approach on dicks that really needed to go. It's the difference between someone who misses the urinal and the twat who takes a shit in it.

Yeah, it'll be abused, but for some games it's really necessary. I'd be wary of bans for allegations of botting, unless the evidence is irrefutable. e.g. someone just spent the past 27 hours repeating the same moves with inhuman precision. For abuse of other players it's more straight forward. There's no mistaking a line like "ffs die faget!"

Well it worked so well the first time they just had to put it back in.
Yeah, it worked so well especially among the userbase. No sort of anger whatsoever, nope. In all seriousness, one has to wonder why they'd think this is a good idea outside of trying to make a profit.
