Anyone tried Animal Well the flagship game of bigmode (dunkey's publishing company)? It came out today. I just pirated it, it's tiny 34MB.

It's good, is it 23€ good? I don't know. My only complaint is, it does not look good on a big display. Pretty fun so far otherwise.
I'm playing it on steam. It's like if halo 2 met halo 3.
 
I just played through Little Kitty, Big City on gamepass, and it was fun.

It’s like Untitled Goose Game but with an actual game component and a cute kitty cat instead of a soulless cobra-chicken. :3

I decided to have a nostalgia trip tonight and watched some old RPG Maker horror game playthroughs that I enjoyed from when I was younger. Most of the games held up great, and it was a lot of fun to remember all these stories again.
This made me curious about modern RPG Maker horror games. So I looked at some recent playthroughs and found one from ManlyBadassHero on a game titled "My Neighbor Enide".
The game was disappointing with an underdeveloped plot and the only saving grace being some nice art. However, what did stand out to me was one of the characters with his bizarre characterization. A young boy named Pincer, whose design is inspired by a type of crab, acts as this stereotypical bully character in the story with a soft spot for the female protagonist, it's also implied with his design that he's going through puberty.
Nothing interesting so far, right? It gets weird quickly! Later in the story Pincer ends up getting into a fight with the protagonist over a video game he had borrowed from her that he had not returned. The two later make up by bonding over that same video game and the protagonist during this exchange comments on that Pincer decided to play as as a female character, he is then shown blushing and responds by saying she just "looked cooler" along with that he named her "Clawdi".
Jumping ahead, there's a timeskip in the game, 3 years after the events of the main story. In this ending, we see the protagonist talking to a female crab character named Clawdi. If it hasn't hit you already, then the entire reason why this character exists in the plot is to be creepy trans kid representation. The developer made made Pincer a crab because some species of crab can change their biological sex. I don't think I need to go into detail about how disgusting it is that an "egg" character was written into the game for no other reason than the dev could. It's a shame, too, since despite being a wholly mediocre game, seeing that character development really soured any enjoyment I had up until that point. If this is any indication of the kinds of people who are making RPG Maker horror games today, then it's sad to see how the medium has fallen.
 
Leisure Suit Larry is on sale for both GOG and Steam until the end of the upcoming week. I still stand by the fact that it is the most fun and sophisticated adult game to ever exist. Nowadays, it just seems like today’s adult games just make it way too much about sex with no real substance.

I'm getting back into Destiny since I have a lot more free time now. I'm reading up on the story past the bits I stopped played and I am laughing my ass off. These writers are grown adults and they seem to be incapable of telling a story more mature than Marvel slop for elementary schoolers. One of the new main characters is a They/Them Cyborg (who is clearly a man by the way) and all the comms are just characters bitching at each other like teenage girls.

I was mostly into a lot of the big games that you probably know about. Though one game that I absolutely love is called "Skinwalker".
Something about the monster and overall atmosphere really stuck with me all these years later.
 
I've been playing Animal Well, it's pretty great. The movement mechanics are good and it's really wrinkling my brain with the puzzles upon puzzles upon puzzles. If you like games with heaps of secrets and no hand holding, like Tunic or Void Stranger or Fez, you'll probably like it too.

The big problem with LSL as a series is it's a Sierra game with bullshit deaths and dead-end scenarios that required you do something far earlier in the game, often without telling you where you goofed.

Reminds me of the decline of Star Trek. Writers used to be familiar enough with military and professional protocol to at least make it sound plausible, but in nu-Trek all these supposed engineers, scientists, and military crewmen talk like a bunch of arrested development Millennials who, like, so totally can't even right now because that's the only mode of existence modern writers are aware of.

Look at this shit and realize that it regularly hitches and drops frames when you pan the camera. Everybody craps on EA and Ubisoft and Activision, but Square is indisputably the laziest publisher in the industry.
Played it a year ago on the Switch, got to around the halfway mark before giving up. Feels like it was so finetuned to be balanced that there was no enjoyment left. Unless I missed something every class did very similar damage and you're usually better off just having more tools.

Quick Update on my return to Destiny: Not going well. I started with a replay of 1, and I forgot how shitty the base game is for new players, and I had to delete one of my OGs to free up a slot. But that's just basic progression. No the worst thing is that I feel...empty. I can make new characters, run some strikes, possibly get into Crucible if I can ever find an actual game with 12 people. But I can't recapture the feeling I had back in 2015. All my friends have moved on, the game isn't really being supported, you know. I'm considering just quitting but installing that damn thing took 12 hours so I want to get some joy out of it.

As for the second game, well if you've ever played a soulless looter shooter with a battlepass you'll understand why I was trying to avoid it. Sorry for blogposting but just had to vent.

still beats destiny 2 buy a fucking mile, simply for not having literally removed the content that explains everything. it might be more grindy by having to start from scratch, but even that is a better new player experience than getting thrown into the game without a clue just getting told "grind higher numbers durr"
 
Has anyone here played The Witch's House before? It's one of those typical Japanese horror RPG maker games. I remember playing it years back, and I was just reminded of it now because I saw someone talk about it on YouTube. The game is very sadistic and gory, each death scene is like a scene from Saw. What I loved (and hated) about the game is the story, most specifically the endings and the massive plot twist. All I can say is, it's one of those horror games where it scares you by playing with you emotionally. Once you get the true ending, you'd be begging to have never played the game not because of its quality, but just how sadistic and depressing it is.

Yeah, it's one of the RPG Maker classics. The kind of twists that only work in gaming.

I finished replaying Knights of the Old Republic 1 recently.
- It has a nice simplistic, earnest charm to it, both in terms of gameplay and storytelling.
- I remember it being longer. I clocked in about 38 hours and did at least 95% of the content. I think the only significant content I passed on was the Genoharadan quest line, since it makes no sense as a light side character.
- Korriban was my favorite world; it has a ton of different ways to make your way through it. Manaan, the water world, was my least favorite. Needlessly gigantic maps and tons of puzzles, without any really interesting content to make it worthwhile.
- Visually the game still holds up today. I didn't even use any graphics mods, mostly because the vast majority of them are either hideous retextures or bland upscales that look overly smooth and less detailed than the regular textures. Around 75% of the regular textures still look fine at 2k resolution but there are a handful of really ugly ones. The textures on the blasters in particular look like they're 4 pixels stretched out over the model.

- Unlike a lot of modern games, KotOR feels largely complete. Sure, with infinite time and money they could've obviously made a much bigger game but as for what we got, there's very few places that feel like they need expanded.
- That said, I do wish the companions had more dialogue. Your party is largely mute 90% of the time.
- The ending portion is a slog. The Unknown World feels like filler and the Star Forge is essentially you running in a straight line while fighting hordes of respawning enemies until you reach the boss battle. I do appreciate that the final boss battle against Malak is essentially just a regular, although tough, fight with him able to regenerate, rather than some super gimmicky boss battle.
- A lot of the dialogue is a little too simplistic and dry. I often found myself reading the subtitles and skipping the VO so that conversations would get over faster.

Already got KotOR 2: The Sith Lords modded and running. Completed Peragus already. I've played it a couple times in the past, it's one of my favorite games. I think the last time I played it was when Team Gizka's content restoration mod got leaked (iirc, it was taking years and was largely abandoned despite constant promises that it was totally coming out soon, leading to one of the team members to finally just leak it, causing much drama). This is my first time trying out the newer and much more polished content restoration mod.
