Forgotten Copy of Super Mario Bros. Sets Record at Auction

The game was bought as a Christmas gift in 1986 but was left in a desk drawer for 35 years. It sold for $660,000 at an auction on Friday.

An unopened copy of Nintendo’s Super Mario Bros. that had been bought in 1986 as a Christmas gift but sat forgotten in a desk drawer until recently was sold on Friday for $660,000, according to an auction house in Dallas.

The price was a record for a video game, the auction house, Heritage Auctions, said in a statement. That distinction was previously held by another copy of the same game, which sold for $114,000 in July.

The game that sold on Friday was purchased as a Christmas gift in 1986 but it had been placed in a desk drawer, where it remained undisturbed for 35 years, the statement said.
“It stayed in the bottom of my office desk this whole time since the day I bought it,” the seller, who asked not to be identified, told Heritage Auctions. “I never thought anything about it.”

Valarie McLeckie, who oversees video game sales at Heritage Auctions, said that the game was produced in late 1986 during a brief period when the games were sealed with plastic shrink wrap, rather than sticker seal, and before another packaging variation was introduced in 1987.

“Since the production window for this copy and others like it was so short, finding another copy from this same production run in similar condition would be akin to looking for a single drop of water in an ocean,” Ms. McLeckie said in the statement. “Never say never, but there’s a good chance it can’t be done.”

Details about the winning bidder were not immediately available on Saturday. The auction website allows bidders to make offers to the new owner, starting at $990,000 or more.
Heritage Auctions called it the “finest known copy” of the game, with even the perforated cardboard hangtab intact. The opening bid at the auction was $310,000.

In the past year, interest in factory-sealed video games has greatly expanded, and games for the Nintendo Entertainment System are often the hottest investments. Collectors have been able to quickly flip titles for thousands of dollars in profits.

Super Mario Bros., an iconic, fan-favorite video game that has since spawned multiple variations, was first produced in 1986.

It features two brothers, Mario and Luigi, who live in the Mushroom Kingdom and are charged with rescuing Princess Toadstool, who has been kidnapped by Bowser, the king of the Koopa. Complete with a recognizable theme song, Mario has remained a popular character among fans for decades.

According to the narrative from the original instruction booklet, the kingdom of the peaceful Mushroom People had been invaded by the Koopa, a tribe of turtles who turned the “quiet, peace-loving” Mushroom People into stones, bricks and plants. The only person who can reverse the magic spell is Princess Toadstool, the daughter of the Mushroom King.

In the game, players guide Mario on a quest to free the princess and save the kingdom of the Mushroom People. He navigates eight levels filled with giant mushrooms, menacing turtles and other strange obstacles.

“You are Mario! It’s up to you to save the Mushroom People from the black magic of the Koopa!” the original instructions tell players.

Since Super Mario Bros. debuted, the brothers have been featured in numerous games, saving new lands and rescuing more princesses, including Super Mario Sunshine, Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Odyssey. The most recent, Super Mario 3D World, was released in February for the Nintendo Switch system.

Mario’s presence expands beyond the video game world, too.
In March, Super Nintendo World opened at Universal Studios Japan in Osaka. Visitors can walk through the familiar green pipe at the park’s entrance, explore Princess Peach’s castle and eat burgers inside a giant mushroom, all with the Mario theme song playing in the background.

Super Nintendo World parks also have been planned for Singapore and the United States.
Given Mario’s popularity and the successful sale of the similarly rare copy of Super Mario Bros. for more than $100,000, Heritage Auctions had expected to draw a high price for the copy on Friday, Ms. McLeckie said.

“Even so, the degree to which this game was embraced outside the market has been nothing short of exceptional, and that aspect of this sale has certainly exceeded our expectations,” Ms. McLeckie said. “Though, I suppose we can’t be too shocked: Who doesn’t love Mario?”

Possibly somebody hoping to cash in on the "greater fool" theory. But a million dollars for a video game cartridge is kind of a stretch.
This is money laundering. You can find Super Mario Bros. AND Duck hunt combo cart for like 2-4 dollars. The original print run of Super Mario bros. is also very common. The most expensive are OG Mario bros. where it's just the arcade game(not the platformer) and Super Mario Bros. 3 (because it's one of the legendary games for the system).

The Atari Version of mario bros. isn't even expensive and that's just gotten because it's a real oddity.

If you want to be a bitch about the instruction paperwork, that's not hard or that expensive to get either.

I'm kind of looking forward to Maneater:Truth Quest.

Like it's Shark Week: Ancient Aliens but they're covering a wide range of conspiracy theories including transgender bigfoot who can turn invisible.

They're also changing up the shark species, I think you play as a hammerhead. I just hope they fix the actual scale of the creatures. Sperm whales in the original game were tiny as hell compared to the shark.

Is it me or metroid vanias really don't be long in a 2d game that's 3d what I mean is that the camera perspective is 2d but the graphics are obviously "realistic" also doesn't help matter s that there isn't that many good 3d-2d Metroid vanias sperging aside really excited for the game

Is it me or I vastly prefer shadow warrior and blood over duke 3d just I am not a big fan of it
For me Duke 3D was the best game of the old build engine trilogy. I haven't played the old Shadow Warrior that much and Blood is just a touch too difficult on any worthwhile difficulty setting for me to get into it.

Last years summer shows were unbearable with them scattered all over the place. Rather have the cringe and announcements all in one weekend.

Checking a reddit AMA about a Sony employee that was involved with the Vita and the guy throwed some pearls about that dumpster fire

  1. The console came gimped since day 1, Sony was so paranoiac that literally blocked parts of the console even for developers for no reason, when they decide to unlock all the potential with patches to the firmware it was to late
  2. The retarded proprietary memory stick was to annoy hackers , Sony became uber paranoid since that super hacking they suffered ages ago, they also blame them for the death of the console and the shop because for a while Sony did not care that it was selling jackshit but getting a tiny but constant revenue, hack as released they decided "fuck them in the ass" and dropped any pretense of caring and give it a slow death
  3. The Vita was going to have a HDMI addon but it was dropped because it had software issues, streamers groan in pain
  4. Vita 2 is not happening, the guy doesnt elaborate further but is obviously that no one will give a shit about it because everyone and their grandmother has a Switch
  5. Sony consider the Vita a failure (lol), did not fulfill any of the sale milestones they have proposed for it and the hack was just the excuse to finally kill it mafia style
  6. There is a inside war in Sony for the PlayStation brand, the guy imply that we can see the winner already that the Americans got hold of the branch because USA is the biggest vidya market, this also explain all the fuckery they have been doing recently and failing spectacularly in Japan where Xbox is going balls deep to get that second spot (and if you believe the numbers they are getting there thanks to Game pass)

Sony killing cult following IPs is pretty normal, the guy throw a example of Metroid that even when is culturally important, Nintendo keep throwing games (or pretending to be) about it, he pull numbers that Metroid has sold like 20 million copies between all the series but it you compare it with Animal crossing that did that with the switch game is simply not viable for Sony to keep IP that dont print shitload of money, aka if it doesnt pull God of war numbers is uber shit

A man of culture! Bought it for 2 friends, but they're Diablo snobs and won't play anything else as far as ARPGs go. What a shame.
I mean, if they're coming from a standpoint of "Diablo 2 is the greatest ARPG ever", ok, D2 was pretty damn good and D2 LoD was great until patches 1.10 and 1.11 made things REALLY weird (and it was still OK, just kind of made some things insanely powerful and others much less viable). But as far as anything else goes... Grim Dawn absolutely humiliates Diablo 3 and beats Path of Exile. As GD currently stands with Ashes of Malmouth and Forgotten Gods, the game is fucking fantastic.

My only complaints are probably the miserable drop rates on certain items and the state of certain mastery combinations (Saboteur is rough at the moment) and skills (Dreeg's Evil Eye is honestly kind of weak, Blade Trap is borderline pointless against bosses even with the Rimetongue set, Aegis of Menhir could use a reduction on its cooldown, and Drain Essence feels pretty weak).

I got recommended Grim Dawn here on the Farms. Bought it, and I am loving it! I absolutely love the setting and the gameplay is super fun.
