What I'm about to say is an unpopular opinion, but as a fan of old anime (80s-2000s) anime hit very different from western media and even modern anime. It's just so weird and foreign to me to base what media you like on whether or not you have yellow fever. Literally can't imagine it.
It's hard to explain. So much modern anime is slice-of-life moe-blob bullshit dragged out to a million episodes. Modern western entertainment is either wokeshit revivals of 80s IP, or more capeshit than even the most die hard super hero fan can stomach. Then on the other hand you have stuff like this.
There's a simple problem you run into. Eventually you know horror games inside out. Some horror becomes extremely dated, others you get used to. A great example is how the Exorcist used to be the scariest film ever made, and now is considered a comedy.I was asking for suggestions, not aiming to discuss my opinion on goofy games. I get it, people love Resident Evil. They're solid games, but they don't make me feel fear/tension/make my palms sweat and the god awful voice acting and bizarre dialog all the way up to RE:Village, is comedic to me. Like B-Movie so bad it's good stuff.
I vaguely remember people talking about The Flood in Halo as the scariest thing ever. The whole "scary japanese girl" cliche was scary at one time, but is now also a joke. This might be why I don't mind Fear 2 and 3 as much as others, because they hit the same beats as the first game, it's just the first game launched when the scary japanese girl thing was still scary to most.
I can go on to recommend individual games like Condemned or Cold Fear, but it's hard to judge. I've not played Tormented Souls or Choo Choo Charles, but they might be up your street. The latter is obviously a horror comedy.
