Death by Degrees is a pretty interesting game, though it’s disappointing it received mixed reviews upon release

I might just play it on the PS2 emulator tonight for old times sake, even though I know the physical copy for this is selling for cheap right now.
Hell yes.

Death By Degrees is a guilty pleasure of mine. I will admit it's a bad game though. What's fascinating about it to me is that it's Arkham Asylum before Arkham Asylum was a thing. If the controls were not shit, and the annoying elements were removed, it would be remembered as a classic.

A couple of other "ahead of their time" PS2 games. Ratchet Gladiator and Urban Chaos Riot Response by Rocksteady. (another Arkham connection). Urban Chaos is particular gets confused with a bad PS1 game with the same name. The one I'm talking about has you playing as a riot cop shooting masked thugs in the face and tazing them till they catch fire. Both games are a lot of fun, but it's the progression of the that's interesting.

Ratchet would feel right at home with late era 360 games like Destiny, though these days there would be micro transactions. Urban Chaos I haven't really seen copied in theme and progression, which is shocking to me.

id say Steam has the biggest issue with this, Gaben is literally ok with anyone publishing a slop 2 hour asset-flip for 10 dollars because he pockets a cut, Consoles rightfully get a lot of shit for being a closed eco-system but at least most of the indie games being published on Xbox and PlayStation arent complete and utter scams

Ever since optical discs could be pressed, it only increased the amount of shovelware to go on consoles. Between Europe, Japan, and USA, the original PlayStation had over 4000 licensed titles, more Genesis, SNES, and NES combined. A large amount of that, is, in fact, shovelware.

One of the things that made Arkham Asylum fun (Arkham City didn't have this) was using your Bat-gadgets to traverse through Arkham Asylum easier, like a bit of a Metroidvania (especially rethinking things once Ivy made a mess of things, as some pathways were cut off and alternate passages had to be used).

Any good coop games out there for old guys who don't have as much time for games anymore? Buddy and I finished Broforce and loved it. Could use some more games like that.

Are you after online or offline?

Co-op is a topic I could talk at length about. I loved co-op games back in the day, but nobody will play them now.

UFO 50 has a few offline co-op game if you want psudo retro stuff, though you might be better off downloading an emulator and roms. Streets of Rage 2 is a classic.

Online. Orcs Must Die 2 and 3 have co-op and are short. Earth Defense Force 4.1 and 5 are long games, but short missions you can blaze through on low difficulties.

There is a bunch I want to recommend. Like Resident Evil 5, Saints Row 3, Renegade Ops, and Titanfall 2, but having not played them in years I don't know if they still work.

And of course, there's the no-brainers. Vermintide. Left 4 Dead 2. Payday 2. Just stick to the core content and lower difficulties and you'll avoid most of the autism that ruins the games for the obsessed.

I can go into more obscure stuff too.

Thanks @Judge Dredd , I'll give some of these a look. Definitely online games only. We had such a blast playing the o.g. coop gears of war games back when they first came out, just stupid action movie shit not too taxing.

The Xbox 360 was the golden age of online and couch co-op. Gears of War, Halo 3, Modern Warfare 2, even games people hate like Army of Two and Fear 3 were good for me.

Obscure 1 and 2 are also co-op horror games and very campy. They are on steam and you can get both for less than $7 on there last time I checked, or you can emulate the PS2 versions if you want.
Never got to play those. Love Resident Evil 5 and Resident Evil Revelations 2 Raid Mode. The problem with Revelations 2 is you have to play the shitty campaign to unlock all the raid levels. I think the campaign is co-op, but good luck finding anyone to play it. It's best played on easy though, and for half the game one player is stuck playing a little girl who can point at items and see enemies through walls. She can't do anything else.

Picked up two copies of both the left 4 dead games. On paper this is perfect. Now the arduous task of making time.
I'd say you wasted money, because all the worthwhile Left 4 Dead 1 content is in Left 4 Dead 2. But Left 4 Dead 1 is more grimdark, and I think both games are super cheap anyway?

Battlefield 3 has a good coop campaign it's separate from the main campaign and shorter. Each mission is completely different. I remember it fondly.

Lost planet 2 and dead space 3. RE6 is insanely fun more of an action game. short missions.

Space Marine 2 has a coop campaign.

Both games lean more in the Resident Evil 1-3 gameplay wise, and you have two characters at all times on the screen, it could be a buddy or the AI. The first Obscure is interesting but flawed, the characters can get perma killed and affect how puzzles are solved since each one has a special skill. You can swap them in safe zones around the hub world. The sequel is more lineal to its detriment but well worth a play since it suffered an identity crisis mid development, and it switches from different types of horror in a not so subtle way.

I've played Revelations 2 and broke it once I discovered that Moira and the little girl can get stunned instead of killed by most of the enemies in single player, so I sent them first to explore the area and to scout for the invisible bugs. You can still play it in couch co-op in PS3 and X360, I'm not so sure if the later ports can do that.

Remnant 2. If you're really in a hurry it even has a boss rush mode so you can have extra-condensed fun.

As for what I've been playing lately, Arkane's Prey is better than I initially gave it credit for. I'm playing it on Nightmare with all the survival modifiers engaged and it's making me slow down and engage the game on its own terms. A worthy challenge.

Dynasty Warriors Origin plays really well and looks really good, but maaaan does it spam you with cutscenes, and pretty much all of the optional bond cutscenes are completely samey and pointless. I definitely think I prefer a traditional mission based musou game to this new style, though I would at least like to see them do a sequel to this one since it ends at Chi Bi.

The only gaming event that matters is coming:

The 2024 Vidya Gaem Awards, in 2 days, March 15th.

I'm yet again in gamer purgatory. I lack the energy to sit down and play a demanding game, so I sub to an mmorpg, realize I won't do endgame content, quit, cycle repeats.

I wish I had a Sims kind of gane to just play endlessly. Same doomscroll territory as an mmo but on my own terms. :(
