Are videogames for children?

Not sure where to put this.

Ofcom (the UK government) has decided to go after steam to ... ... ...protect the children somehow?

But yeah, Steam now needs a credit card to view any "mature" game. This includes on accounts that are more than 18 years old, and for games you already own.

There was some viral tweets by a guy showing his 19 year account requiring verification to prove he's own 18, but can't find it short notice.
As far as I know that's only in the UK and Steam's reasoning is this: Only 18+ people in the UK can have credit cards, ergo if you put your credit card on file then you're over 18. At that point it's a fraud/bank/family issue instead of a Steam one if kids can see adult content.

I'm not saying I'm into it or agree with OFCOM but Steam seems to have complied as I'm sure the alternative would've been having to pay whatever fines (and comply anyway) in order to keep selling games in the UK.

Except what doesn't make sense is that if you have a steam account you're gonna have a credit card. I guess you can be playing F2P games, otherwise unless you're buying all your keys on third party sites nothing actually changed. Also who the fuck wants to see the 18+ games? Like the steam filter doesn't turn off games like Baldurs gate 3 with sex scenes, it just filters out futa dine and fuck.

Would using gift cards be considered as passing the 18+ age requirement for OFCOM?

You guys thoughts on Aim Down Sights?

While I disagree with some of his takes, particularly his doomerisn as it relates to modern Halo multiplayer, I do appreciate how he breaks down his argument’s logically instead of relying solely on ragebait and getting overly emotional about how the industry has le fallen

Man you niggas ever miss handhelds ? I'm not talking about stuff like the Steam Deck, ROG Ally or even the Switch. Which are all great but are just home consoles or gaming PCs that happen to be portable. I'm talking about small handhelds that you can throw in your pocket. I hope nintendo or sony or whoever makes a pocketable handheld with their own games like the DS or PSP soon.

Your options are going to be Chinesium ARM handhelds like "Anbernic". There's lots of scalability in price and performance. Examples:

RG405V (~$90):

4.0" 640x480 4:3 IPS touchscreen display | UNISOC Tiger T618 chipset | 4GB RAM | 128GB Internal Storage | Android 12 | Wi-Fi | Bluetooth
Plays most retro systems up to and including Nintendo DS, Dreamcast, N64, and PSP very well.

RG Arc-S (~$50):

4.0" 640x480 4:3 IPS display (non-touchscreen) | RK3566 chipset | 1GB RAM | Wi-Fi | Bluetooth | HDMI
Plays most retro systems up to and including Genesis, SNES, PS1, and Game Boy Advance, very well; some Nintendo DS; and a limited amount of Dreamcast / N64 / PSP possible (note: no joysticks)

At the higher end, there are ARM chips more comparable to older flagship smartphones, or even AMD x86 APUs, which should be capable of running mostly everything, while still being smaller than a Steam Deck or ROG Ally. One thing of note lately are these dual-screen handhelds:

ONEXPlayer Introduces ONEXSUGAR: World’s First Dual-Screen Android Handheld, Starting At $599 With Early Bird Discount (Snapdragon G3 Gen 3)
AYANEO Flip 1S DS dual-screen handheld announced: Ryzen AI HX 370 and OLED

Nintendo just released something called the Switch 2, so the chance of them delivering the pocketable handheld you crave is zero. Their strategy replaces the pocketable handheld and the stationary console with the dockable luggable handheld. They are more likely to start releasing more of their games for smartphones, while they continue their war on emulators.

Sony is rumored to be working on a handheld (not the Portal) capable of playing PS5 and even PS6 games. It could end up slightly smaller than the Steam Deck 1 but should also be seen as a portable gaming PC that won't be pocketable.

Wasn't aware of those threads thank you. I'm aware of the chinese made emulation handhelds, they're pretty cool. I even considered getting them at some point.

And yeah the possibility of a new handheld from either is slim to none. Nintendo hit it out of the park with the switch formula by satisfying both portable and home console needs. And the new Sony thing will probably be the PS version of the ROG Xbox Ally X. A handheld PC that can play digital Playstation games locally. Unfortunately it makes complete sense from a business standpoint. Why waste money and R&D developing a handheld when we already have the technology to play AAA games on the go.

Anyone got suggestions for a fun open-world game? Preferably one with a modern/urban setting; was considering picking Watch Dogs 1 back up again. Any other suggestions?
I really, really liked playing the Division 2 as a single player game exploring DC. Now it helps that I am familiar with the DC area but honestly its total possible to play it as a single player game. You can set it up that the only time you see other people is basically in the hub and that is it.

This as much as Nintendo has been making extremely anti-consumer moves as of late the Switch formula for them as worked extremely well and I don’t see any competitor taking a massive share of their market space in that department.

The "appeal" of a handheld to many is to replace their PC cause they're sane enough to realize how consuming that place is. I get a completely different reaction to movie if I don't sit by my pc and watch them, but that's also the trap that leads people to think "nah dawg ill buy a $2500 steamdeck and then ill game totally different" only to throw it on facebook a year later.

It'd take some dumbphone tier emotional investment to "just" play a gameboy on the go, but it'd also likely be the only way to reasonably play handhelds. I mean shit, pokemon is less autistic than candy crush.

They have no competition is the issue. Overpriced console, overpriced game, monthly sub fee, only a handful of first-party games each generation, partial cloud storage despite PAYING for it. Imagine if Nintendo and Switch 2 appeared right now on the market, in a world where Nintendo didn't exist. A subpar steamdeck with an outdated model.

Im convinced a lot of Gaming YouTubers don’t actually like Video Games, I mean you have people like Asmongold who only complains about everything whenever he covers a game, while I would agree with a small amount of his takes 99% of YouTube videos now are just whine about products
It’s funny because some smaller YouTube with minimal subscribers (mainly 10k-50k at best) that cover video games or do video essays on some rare and obscure games seem to actually like the game and the lore. Bonus points if they’re playing the game for the first time and actually doing research while playing a platformer that they never played in the PS2/XBOX/GameCube era in real time while making the video.

Then again, in relation to what you posted, it’s getting rare and rarer to see that.

Polish gamedev recreated the first level (up to and including the first funkyboard stage) of Rayman 3 using custom sculpted 3d assets, new lighting and shaders all in unreal engine. The result is an absolutely insane looking recreation of the original game. I know (fanmade) remakes/remasters are a dime a dozen but this I feel is truly special. Everything is custom, done by hand, from scratch. I loved Rayman 3 growing up and this remake manages to capture that magical enchanting atmosphere the original had. Highly recommend giving it a look if you've played Rayman 3 back in the day.

Why isn't there any good multiplayer police games?

It's irritating. There are a couple but they're usually dogshit unity slop. How hasn't someone made something decent where a couple friends can patrol about and enforce the flabby arm of the law?
This is the police (the first one) was decent but it was top down and a POV from the chief. Was still kinda cool but I'd like something first person and it'd be cool if it had the grittyness of things like swat4/ready or not.
I think the closest thing I can find is LCPDFR for GTA4 lol, the gta5 version is single player only unless I join an RP server and i'm just not that autistic.

Is there something I'm missing or?

Someone supposedly leaked some beta footage of the cancelled Prey 2.

Looks like the usual early 2010's cover shooter, no wonder it got canned.

"AA Games Are the New AAA" is a very bold but believable claim. Do note that as an example, Australia still has a thriving gaming industry despite not making anything AAA-related since L.A. Noire.

WakaStudio announces Cut That Wire, a multiplayer social deduction game set to blow up on Windows later this year via Steam. This is a romp featuring bondage (well, yeah), betrayal, and the prospect of being blown to pieces. This is seen in the Official Trailer, which shows anthropomorphic characters (yep), so animal cruelty can be added to the feature list. We've all been there; you're strapped to a bomb that your friends are trying to deactivate, but one of them is a suicidal imposter rooting for an explosion (some men just want to watch the world burn). Here's the scheme:
In Cut That Wire, you’re a hostage, strapped to a ticking bomb, trapped in a room with three others and one of them is an imposter working against you. Every ally could be your friend… or your undoing. As a victim, you must uncover the imposter before it’s too late, or fight to be the last one standing. One lucky victim plays the Engineer, who sees one safe wire that can be cut without detonation. As the imposter, deceive, manipulate and outwit everyone to survive but one wrong move could blow everything apart.

What the fuck did he do?

Anyone else keeping track of the time until GTA 6 releases? 260 days remain. I'm actually hyped for the game to come out.

I don't like the Bonnie and Clyde story they're going with though seems too generic and unimaginative.
