Video Game Recommendation Thread

Yakuza 0

This franchise is an enigma. At one moment, you're watching a serious crime drama. The next, you're in the sega arcade playing the crane game. You're fighting multiple enemies at once and kicking ass... and then you're dancing in the local disco. This is the essence of Yakuza; completely opposing tones come together and somehow just work.

This video basically sums it all up:

...oh, and the story and gameplay are both pretty good. I recommend Yakuza 0 specifically since it's a prequel to the other games and most people agree that it's the best Yakuza game.

also, @Rumpled Foreskin:

don't you EVER say "Fall Out" instead of "Fallout" again or i will personally come to your home and rape you
Fall Out

I've been playing the new DOOM lately and while it's sort of light on plot/lore, there is some there if you're interested. Also shooting Hell Knights in the face with a super shotty never gets old.

I'm fairly confident that I've got both, but may not have given them a full chance. I seem to remember Transistor having a rather smug talking sword?

I'll give it a look, thanks.
If you haven't got it already get shadowrun drwgonfall it's like the original but the story is way more engaging and emotional the setting is also great

Ten Games from the Jaimas "I Found This Enjoyable" collection:

1. The Surge
Sci-Fi Souls. Starts really well with a very interesting concept and a unique setup, its plot then proceeds to spiral out into crazytown as you figure out what exactly happened and why your crippled protagonist, Warren, went through probably the most brutal scene in vidya history since the Stroggification sequence from Quake 4. While it's fucking Nioh levels of ridiculously difficult for no reason and the combat system is retardedly unforgiving the game is genuinely enjoyable, if mildly frustrating, if you stick with it.

2. Iron Brigade
Formerly known as Trenched, this was the single best Arcade game on Xbox 360. Now it's on PC via Steam and arguably even better. One of the best mech games to come out in the last decade, it has a fantastic sense of humor and effectively blends mech combat with Tower Defense and solid co-op. Grab some friends and fuck up the Monovision menace. When people speak wistfully of the glory days of Double Fine, games like this are the fucking reason.

3. Slime Rancher
Adorable and more fun than probably should be allowed. Corral slimes, build up your farm, sell off their poop, and make your fortune in this combination exploration/farm-em-up game. It's like Harvest Moon fucked Pokemon. Bonuses if you wind up creating something that should not exist, such as a slime that even getting near risks injury or death and yet reliably tries to hug you, or which spreads radiation in its wake and then explodes.

4. Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon
Retro Game in the vein of Castlevania III. It plays fantastically and looks great. A great preview of what we're going to get when Ritual of the Night hits. If this game is too weeby for you, then you are a faggot and should hang your head in shame. This is the kind of game my generation cut our teeth on, albeit modernized. Enjoy it.

5. Salt and Sanctuary
2D Soulslike with fantastic lore if you go looking and a really creepy atmosphere. I could write fucking thesis statements about this game. It's a fucking fantastic game in its own right, too, with its own unique aesthetic. Definitely worth looking into, though sadly there basically is no multiplayer beyond local or console linking.

6. Another Metroid 2 Remake
It's free, it's fucking awesome, and it's a delight to play. Go try it if you haven't already.
Arguably better than Samus Returns, Nintendo's real Metroid II remake, and Samus Returns is really fucking good.

7. Darkest Dungeon
Trouble yourself not with the implications of this suggestion. Its noble end affords you broad tolerance in your choice of means.

8. Momodora: Reverie Under the Moonlight
I'm including this despite its obvious weebery because your answer to @Vrakks' question on Katawa Shoujo was something other than "fuck off." This game is fucking great, with fantastic music and animation, solid characterization, and enough moral ambiguity to shake an indestructable leaf wielded as a weapon at. This game scratched the Castlevania itch for many prior to the #4 entry on this list, and it's easy to see why. Absolutely worth your time.

9. Mercenary Kings
Metal Slug meets Monster Hunter. You can play with up to four friends. Make your own guns and knives. The animation and graphics are done by the legendary Paul Laurence Robertson of Kings of Power 4 Billion % and Pirate Baby's Cabana Battle Street Fight 2006 fame. Fuck the hell yes.

10. Axiom Verge
Another Metroid-style game with a particularly awesome design ethos and some outstanding setups all its own. Really feels like its own beast which is something to be appreciated, and a legitimately fucked-up plot keeps you guessing. Some of the big reveals are especially terrifying in their own right, considering that the game is about questioning the nature of reality itself and how that reality can be fucked with.

The anti-weeb thing is because I have a really low capacity for cringe, and most weeb franchises that I've seen have it by the metric ton. I'm not overly interested in playing an effete boything that's saving the world through the power of prancing around in ridiculous clothes around a comically oversized boss that just comes off as ridiculously camp. I know that's a sweeping generalisation, but meh.
How about a different kind of weeb? I am talking about the Yakuza games, which are gradually getting remade/remastered from scratch now, they have the perfect blend between a serious, and extremely well-written and acted crime-story tone and a totally insane and weird vibe for the sidequests/minigames:

Games are on the PS4/PS3 already, but there the PC versions of the 1st two games in the series' chronology (more accurately, a prequel and a remake of the 1st game) will be out soon (Y0 will be out on Aug 1st, Kiwami will be a bit later).

The games have an incredible amount of content and have been highly praised.

If you liked the Witcher 3 I'm surprised it didn't occur to you to play the other two Witcher games.

OK, I'll try to answer these as comprehensively as I can, but I'm posting from my phone, so forgive me if I miss you.

I played the first three halo games, but no longer have an xbox, so sort of fell out of the franchise. They were fun, although the story sort of lost its way. I am tempted to give marathon a try, just for sheer old school contrariness' sake. I do have a powerpc mac somewhere too, so can do it properly.

I've got wolfenstein, and it was OK at best - I was expecting to be blown away thanks to the hype, but only really got as far as "yeah, this is all right".

Lotta people are recommending yakuza - it certainly sounds interesting enough. When I say no weeb stuff, I don't mean a blanket ban on Japanese media, just the kind of shit that generates narutards or body pillow fuckers. My main issue with weebery is that it typically swings between edgelord and fetishism with nothing much in between.

I've heard the name shin megami tensei a few times before. Wasn't expecting quite such an interesting-sounding premise, to be honest. I'll give it a look.

Digimon. Really? I mean, if the game is really worth it, sure, but I'm too old to have grown up with the franchise, so don't really have any investment in it, much like the whole Pokemon craze.

New Doom is fun - I've already got it, but have played it to death.

As for the witcher series - number 3 had the only competently-implemented control system of all of them. I did get part way into 2 back on the xbox 360 (which has since died), but fucking about with the alchemy and crafting system was so clunky that I lost interest. Witcher 1 was like trying to assemble a fusion reactor with chopsticks - you know there's a worthy payoff, but God damn they don't make it accessible.

@Jaimas - I appreciate the wall of sperg, it is precisely what I was hoping for.

Thanks everyone for your input. Definitely given me a lot to think about and try out.

I'm bored, and I want to download some vidya. Do you know of any websites/particular games that you like and recommend? Steam and Gamejolt are the ones I browse, but if you have any suggestions, I'm open

Emperor: Battle for Dune - a classic yet under appreciated Westwood game. Getting physical copies will be a pain so you'll have to more than likely download it from somewhere.

Get some emulators/roms?

Also I PMed you with a Steam key for Space Marine I got for free on Humble Bundle.

I just finished playing the crap out of the latest Monster Hunter, and I am getting bored of Yu GI Oh. Gimme something fun NOW!

Necroing this thread, I want three types of game recs

1. Games which are similar to survival horror ie have a ton of exploration, combat and puzzles. The game has to be old, pre 2005 cause I really want the PS1 PS2 era graphical look.

2. Games which have a small but complex map, think Ocarina of Time, Majoras Mask, Dark Souls, FF7, Earthbound, Links Awakening etc. The kind of stuff which gets posted in cozy video game scenery compilations. These also have to be pre 2005, I want some stuff from 93-2000 somewhere between SNES and PS1. Not exactly open world but not disconnected levels.

3. Sim/Strategy games which are old and complex. Something like Dune 2000, Pharaoh, Cultures, Settlers, AOE, The Nations, Dungeon Keeper things like that. Pre 2010, can be niche if required.

I want them to be old cause I can run them and I think old games look good. Not too old like 80s old, mid 2000s should be okay. I cant stop playing such kinda shit, I want more, a ton more.
