Pretty much. Nipponese unironically crave freedom. Notice some of their most popular works. Its always someone who finds a way to build themselves up or bend over the system. As reality is a little too happy with keeping them down, shackled to their stations. And if they were to even deviate, there goes their living. Its not a secret that stress is part of the reason why they party extra hard. Because they know that they have yet another shitty day waiting for them. Neetdom has alot to do with this reality. So in other words, anime, game, and manga are more or less how people in Japan wish reality was, whereas real life there is more conformist and workaholic?
There is great irony in a place known for its creative works but the people within could not really express themselves lest they lose their standing.
When I say freedom, I don't mean discharging a gun in air and being able to jack off in public. Just a little more slack for their personal lives just within their sensibilities as what a Nipponese views as freedom is vastly different from how a Burger views freedom.
