If you're playing solo, absolutely. There's a few later bits of content that if you go for solo you need to have a very specialized build for it or you're going to get your teeth kicked in. If you're in a squad (even one that's matchmade) it's not so bad.I know the trick with a lot of these F2P games is introducing some concept out of nowhere that makes certain content impossible without a specific build that you might need to spend a chunk of time farming (or paying) for, so I'm curious if things like that will pop up and be grating to deal with. I've been turned off another F2P game I was getting into for that very reason. I don't mind the grind, I just want it to be accessible and also respect my time.
What I like about Warframe is that you can pick a loadout that you want to use and get it within at most a week, as long as it's within your progression stage, isn't vaulted, and isn't locked behind some insane RNG like the braton/lato vandal. Once you find your groove you can basically make an endgame loadout using almost any frame and weapons, as long as they have potatoes and the right mods.I put 20-something hours into this a few years ago and dropped it. For whatever reason I decided to run it again with a fresh account and I'm having a blast.
Maybe I'm not remembering it from the first time, but there's a new gauntlet of player onboarding missions right at the start that get you acquainted with some of the basic systems by unlocking them one by one. It's not that overwhelming IMO, but I did pop into a few Twitch streams and watch a couple of videos of people way further along and I understood nothing. Not like "oh, I kind of see what's happening here but I don't understand X, Y, and Z," but "am I playing the same game?" Bringing this up because the game could dump all these crazy systems on you at once but instead introduces things bit by bit in a way that feels organic. It seems early on you can get away with not interacting with things that don't make a ton of sense yet because you can get incredibly powerful just by paying attention to mods and upgrading them according to your warframe and play style.

Mostly I go with weapons I enjoy using or see myself getting lots of use out of. As I've gathered up enough forma via playing to use them on whatever I want without fear of running out, it boils down to "do I have no issue with leveling up this thing again to get a bit more damage out of it". Same really for catalysts. There's tons of weapons I've leveled up, never bothered to install a single forma or put a catalyst in it and likely will never use it again.How do you guys decide which weapons are worth catalyzing and forma'ing?

I mostly carry a melee weapon to passively gain mastery, and if I'm actually planning to fight in melee I'm using a Warframe like Valkyr.
Valkyr was the first Warframe that I actually took the time to develop a specific build for, long before her hysteria rework and before Exalted Weapons were a thing. While I can understand why a rework was needed (essentially permanent invincibility so long as you avoided disruptors) I do kind of miss the old Valkyr.Valkyr Prime is still my second favourite frame to play. Heh, Mesa is the only frame that took the crown from Valkyr. The short explanation is that energy usage ramps up over time and energy can't be restored by abilities or items while in use. Also, a portion of damage ignored is stored, and if you are close enough to enemies that have line of sight to you when you deactive hysteria you take a portion of that portion of damage.
