Warframe

There was a massive oopsie where warframe auto banned a bunch of PC players for no reason on the 24/25 th. Really making those diversity hires known there.

I put 20-something hours into this a few years ago and dropped it. For whatever reason I decided to run it again with a fresh account and I'm having a blast.

Maybe I'm not remembering it from the first time, but there's a new gauntlet of player onboarding missions right at the start that get you acquainted with some of the basic systems by unlocking them one by one. It's not that overwhelming IMO, but I did pop into a few Twitch streams and watch a couple of videos of people way further along and I understood nothing. Not like "oh, I kind of see what's happening here but I don't understand X, Y, and Z," but "am I playing the same game?" Bringing this up because the game could dump all these crazy systems on you at once but instead introduces things bit by bit in a way that feels organic. It seems early on you can get away with not interacting with things that don't make a ton of sense yet because you can get incredibly powerful just by paying attention to mods and upgrading them according to your warframe and play style.

I know the trick with a lot of these F2P games is introducing some concept out of nowhere that makes certain content impossible without a specific build that you might need to spend a chunk of time farming (or paying) for, so I'm curious if things like that will pop up and be grating to deal with. I've been turned off another F2P game I was getting into for that very reason. I don't mind the grind, I just want it to be accessible and also respect my time.

If you're playing solo, absolutely. There's a few later bits of content that if you go for solo you need to have a very specialized build for it or you're going to get your teeth kicked in. If you're in a squad (even one that's matchmade) it's not so bad.

That said, unlike other F2P games Warframe only locks a few (mostly end-game) things and faction reputation behind timegates that you can't infinitely farm whenever you please. So not paying and playing more is always an option, including farming specific items you can sell to other players for in-game currency that you can spend on loadout/warframe/weapon slots or items/skins.

What I like about Warframe is that you can pick a loadout that you want to use and get it within at most a week, as long as it's within your progression stage, isn't vaulted, and isn't locked behind some insane RNG like the braton/lato vandal. Once you find your groove you can basically make an endgame loadout using almost any frame and weapons, as long as they have potatoes and the right mods.

If you want something, you can get it and as the drop tables are public info you know what you're getting into and roughly how long it'll take. Though, I do wish DE walked back from the "make certain boss enemies immune to many Warframe abilities" stance as I like my Mesa.

The game is fundamentally imbalanced tbh, I wish instead of making Generic Open Plains With Interspersed Structures and Caves IV: This Time It's Personal they'd devote some dev time to fixing enemy scaling and the utterly broken modding system.

They still doing the whole open world nonsense then I take it? That was the part that completely ruined it, and I hoped they realized it too and moved away from it, but I guess that was too much to hope for.

Nope, they tripled down on it and are now planning to release a 4th, which appears to contain mostly non-warframe content.

I'll never understand why the designers keep looking at their successful fast-paced-giant-parkour-space-ninja game and then deciding what they need to add is the literal opposite of all those things.

All the non-Warframe stuff they keep throwing in put me off the game. I had a really bad feeling after finishing The Second Dream that was reinforced after the War Within that the space kids were going to become The Big Focus and not the techno-organic war machines that players actually like using. I kind of liked playing as The Drifter during The New War, but all this stuff for a mode I just use for energy makes me think DE's lost the plot and replacing Steve with Rebecca isn't going to fix anything.

How do you guys decide which weapons are worth catalyzing and forma'ing?

Mostly I go with weapons I enjoy using or see myself getting lots of use out of. As I've gathered up enough forma via playing to use them on whatever I want without fear of running out, it boils down to "do I have no issue with leveling up this thing again to get a bit more damage out of it". Same really for catalysts. There's tons of weapons I've leveled up, never bothered to install a single forma or put a catalyst in it and likely will never use it again.

What are some of your favorite non-Kuva/Tenet primaries, secondaries, and melees? I'm trying to find some to try and see if they're worth catalyzing.

Primaries: Dex Sybaris, Ignis Wraith, Rubico Prime, Tigris Prime, Arca Plasmor, Tonkor
Secondaries: Kitguns, Akstiletto Prime, Mara Dentron, Pandero
Melee: Orthos Prime

I mostly carry a melee weapon to passively gain mastery, and if I'm actually planning to fight in melee I'm using a Warframe like Valkyr.

Primaries: Corinth (Prime), Zhuge Prime, Lenz, Ignis Wraith, Daikyu, Dread, Aeolak, Tiberon (Prime), Soma (Prime), Stahlta, Javlok
Secondaries: Pyrana (Prime), Lex (Prime), Knell (Prime), Vasto (Prime), Magnus Prime, Sonicor, Athodai, Akstiletto (Prime), Twin Rogga
Melees: Just pick whatever has decent numbers, it really doesn't matter, they're basically all the same, but you can't go wrong with either Dragon Nikana or Nikana Prime

Valkyr Prime is still my second favourite frame to play. So much anger. So much rage. Pop Hysteria and nearly endlessly rip and tear. If only I could have that much fun with the game again, probably not.

Valkyr was the first Warframe that I actually took the time to develop a specific build for, long before her hysteria rework and before Exalted Weapons were a thing. While I can understand why a rework was needed (essentially permanent invincibility so long as you avoided disruptors) I do kind of miss the old Valkyr.

Now I just use Mesa and fight at range while being essentially immune to any ranged attack that isn't explosive.

Heh, Mesa is the only frame that took the crown from Valkyr. I haven't played the game in years so I don't know what was rebuild en reworked during those years but activating Peacemaker while being surrounded only to clear the entire playing field within seconds... what lovely memories.

Yareli is the best frame.
No I will not elaborate.
Yareli's story is basically Sonic the Hedgehog with Sonic on a skateboard except Eggman outruns Sonic and beats the shit out of him.

The short explanation is that energy usage ramps up over time and energy can't be restored by abilities or items while in use. Also, a portion of damage ignored is stored, and if you are close enough to enemies that have line of sight to you when you deactive hysteria you take a portion of that portion of damage. Yes, said damage bypasses shield gating and can instantly kill you.
