Warhammer: 40,000 - Rogue Trader - CRPG by Owlcat games

I’m doing a pretty soulful run as an Arbites, dogmatic of course but because of the new portrait I’m playing as if he’s a bit older than the companions. He’s got a Batman and Catwoman thing with Jae and I’m trying to like Solomorne, the arbites origin dialogue makes him a lot more bro-tier, where it’s more mutual respect. Bullying the fuck out of the fish and I’m killing that knife-eared whore.

you fucking monster

who doesn't?

Okay, now that's hilarious.

I considered re-playing some of this with the new DLC but apparently the big update that was supposed to bring more balance and fine-tuning to the game got put back to some 1.5 patch later in the year. It's a great game but it's such a long game that I'm not going to restart a second time. Maybe I'll just play it in 2026 when the Trazyn DLC comes out.

Trazyn would appreciate wanting to have the complete set, after all.

This is my strategy. I'm waiting for it to pretty much be wrapped up for a "mega playthrough"

I didn’t do a full-dogma run and I admittedly got inspired by the new portrait looking like Valkorion. So I charged in, knowing there’s more to come and it’s glitchy.

Sure everyday is a new patch and some things are broke but I’m enjoying all the additions of Lex, especially a shotgun/shield build, letting my guy fight on the front with Abelard, Argenta and Kibbles while not stealing any of their spotlight.

I also am really enjoying playing my RT as an Imperium-enforcer rather than a merchant lord. He’s still supercop, just now with the Warrant as his badge, that he’s killing all rivals (I iced the gay Winterscale) and going scorched-earth wherever he goes. It’s very Renegade Shepard and I’m all for it.

Though the downside of that is unless they do something about the levelling, you'll just even more overpowered. I haven't completed the game I got part way and then decided to put it on hold. I'm not actually that much of a gamer. But I got my party to Level 26 and haven't reached either Dargonus or Kieva Gamma yet. How many levels are there because I'm half-way through the second archetype just some way into Act II.

Without spoilers, how is the setting and story side of the game? I'm actually more interested in this than the new mechanics (though I do enjoy that side too)

Are you asking for the full game or just Lex?

Lex Imperialis doesn’t as drastically change Act 1 as Void Shadows does, but Solomorne is in Act 1, you’re meant to get him mid-Act 2. I just got him and am clearing my two fucked up planets and like Void Shadows, the game reasserts itself and the plot continues. I like him, he’s not our “Jacob” or “Wyll,” he’s literally meant to be the stoic one in a buddy-cop movie and I think some people are missing that.

You actually get some soulful dialogue if you are an Arbites, where it’s very clear that the respect can be mutual. Though the romance dialogue option comes in wayyyyyy too soon.

For the full game, Act 1 and 2 are the meat and the high of the game, Act 3 is narrative-wise good but gameplay-wise a slog depending on your builds, Act 4 is where there’s obviously too many “big bads” and depending on your alignment, a choppy mess, but still better than the later acts of other RPGs of his genre (BG3) that’s a given for RPGs though, the later act usually struggles under the ambition and volume of variables.

I like the frontier setting and thankfully there isn’t any “modern” 40k nonsense, like those Primaris abominations or the ridiculous new units they’re shitting out. Just know that heretic is the least-developed path and you lose a lot of content.

55, but it does slow down, and Act 2 is the biggest part of the game anyway. I think I got my last couple levels either shortly before or shortly after the point of no return. But the DLC will probably push it even earlier.

The main story is "I'm trying to run a trading empire, but shit keeps happening and I have to clean it up" more or less (until the endgame), which works pretty well IMO, as it provides a backdrop for side/character/errand quests that you're doing most of the time. For setting, I'm not very familiar with 40k outside of general geek zeitgeist, so I mostly enjoyed the parts that go deeper into faction dynamics. I liked Void Shadows more than the main story, because of more limited scope.

My understanding is that the big warp storm is the cut-off line for new stuff and DH will be post that.

Ah, I just meant Lex. Sorry to both of you I wasn't clear enough.

I actually got further into the game but didn't complete it, choosing to restart when the DLC came out. I didn't finish that either, choosing to weight until the next DLC came out. And now I'm maybe choosing to wait until the big 1.5 patch comes out. But haven't decided. I've read that the Lex DLC begins on Dargonus and I haven't reached their yet (though got past it in my previous go). So I probably could still buy the DLC and play with it on my current run if I'd like. Apparently you just miss a couple of dialogues with the new character on Rykad in Act 1?

Also, I hear you about the silly Primaris stuff. Modern stuff and nonsense.

It’s a whole cinematic and slight change to Rykad. You know that gay fight right before Aurora with the minefield? That’s gone, they also add a Mechanicus merchant rep to the Rykad bunker who conveniently sells some of the new items and lets you have an alternative Act 1 faction rep other than the dirty pirates.

So it’s more than just dialogue, more like a soft-rewrite to Act 1

Ah, that's very good to know. Well then it sounds like enough to tip the scales on my completionist tendencies. It'll have to be a restart. And as I don't want to spend too much time on this game then I think it'll have to be a wait until the big 1.5 patch later in the year. Who knows.

Thanks again.

I can say, the feudal world level in Lex is baaaaaad.

The betrayal is so obvious, the “on-rails” storytelling is particularly insufferable and it’s high-level too, even if shouldn’t be……… it’s a feudal world.

The only upside was being able to make the planet (and everyone involved) suffer.

the mechanicus merchant was always there (assuming you talking about Quartz-Krame) He did get 1-2 new items in Lex to fit the new archetypes. All the other merchant also got a few items in their progression, and there a completely new merchant for the new advanced class in your throne room. There's a fair amount peppered about elsewhere too. I decided not to do an Arbites run first to not upstage Solomorne, but still using the new class (overseer). it brings some solid new options.

The quest to ''get'' solomorne in act 2 should NOT be rushed on higher difficulties. The final fight there is very frustating and close to unbeatable if you are fresh of Footfall. I did multiple runs on Unfair so I estimate i got a solid know-how and it's been quite a slog. Solomorne joined at lvl 24 while I was lvl 20, so now he seems to be permanently 4 levels up on me since he levels when I do. Currently cleaning up the other planets a bit to level before doing the next Lex quest. Like Void Shadows, they upped the difficulty a large amount compared to the main game content.

I kinda feel like you could replace half of Trazyn's dialogue from anywhere with some of Grievous' quips and it would be entirely in-character for him. Many things would make a fine addition to his collection, after all.

Just because you known you'll be betrayed doesn't stop you from being surprised by how.

Just think of the knights as diabolically empowered chaos warriors if it makes the challenge make sense.

I did everything in Act 4, so I was ridiculously overpowered for Act 2 content. One thing I did love about the feudal world was how tech priests are like oxygen, you only realise the importance when they're no longer around keeping things going.

The final post-Caligos missions in the DLC are great, especially the space battle. The late Aunt Theodora was pretty much a supervillain.

One thing I do like is how often you fight murderhobo chaos-types and how in-character it is for them to still hate you even if you’re drenched in corruption.

Just a shame we can’t properly KOTOR II our companions, unless they’re Kibbles, funny drunk nig or the two “companions” you get for being enlightened.

I just wish we got proper Iconoclast companion that aligns with views Iconoclast von Valancius can express.
I rather enjoyed everyone looking at you like you're crazy for suggesting treating people with basic human decency. Very fitting for 40K.

I wish we hadn't got a Space Wolf as a companion. Fucking hate those guys, they read like cringe OCs. Give me a unique space marine like an Iron Hands or something.

bad enough he's voiced by a tranny

Saw this thread bump so I'll say the game is still too easy. I had a little time last week and played a bit more. Got to the point just before the Aurora fight (no spoilers) and was pleased to suddenly see far more enemies than last time I played the game. They've rebalanced it, I thought! But no - second round, a bunch of Arbites show up from the other side to help and turn my first actually challenging battle into a cakewalk.

*sigh*

Stopped again waiting for the promised 1.5 patch.
