The Imperium of Man is a theocratic empire.
There is no active emperor. Sure there is an emperor by name, but there is no central figure that completely ruled the imperium. The Imperium is almost completely decentralized outside of the sol system. Making them feudal.

It's an abhorrent monstrosity in the eyes of Gulliman, that's all I need to know.
It's ironic that the state of the Imperium is essentially what Lorgar originally strived for and now wants to destroy.
Now both have the feeling of "I won but at what cost?"

May have found a way to get my wife to get into role playing. Just needs to use Games Workshop rules. Took her to the one GW store here to check out models and she's picked out a few models then went to a few other gaming stores to see if they had anything else she wanted. Went to the Hairy Tarantula and picked up a few kids board games while we've been looking around. Good store, highly recommend it.

Currently she's going through my list of 3d printing sites to find anything she wants to use for kitbashing her characters further. In the two years we've been playing together this is the first time she'll ever put together her own models really as I usually did everything for us. She's taken some of the sprue's too to cut and check on colours to use for me use for paint it.

That was taken from the Tau ending for Dawn of War: Dark Crusade.

The Tau believe that everyone has a place in the Greater Good. Defying your position, rebelling against the Tau will bring death upon you because it was the lack of order that led to Mont’au, the dark time before the Etherals.
Yeah, Kronus was a nasty problem world and the Imperium would have done a lot worse than merely sterilize the populace as punishment for their constant sedition. Not like the population of Armageddon was rounded up, sterilized, and worked to death in labor camps elsewhere just because they had the bad luck to be on a planet Angron ravaged.

Finished my Infernal Master. Just needs a coat of varnish in the morning. The scarab medallion was a real chore to get looking even half decent. I still suck at tabards, but I found a new method when I did the backside, will try it on future models.

I see T'au as golden age humanity part deux. They have insane tech, little knowledge of how bad things really are and are basically living on borrowed time until one of their subordinate races/tech betray them. The problem is that until then they come off as massive mary sues who can do everything that the Imperium bleeds to pull off.
There’s a big difference between DAoT humanity and the Tau. Humanity spread across the galaxy independently. The STC was designed to allow human colonists to operate on their own. The Tau expand at the behest of the Etherals, each wave of expansion is planned. It allows them to bring together an incredible amount of resources to expand and control each planet in the Empire at the cost of slower expansion.

The problem for the Tau are the inevitable breakaways and lost colonies. The Etherals have tried to unperson the Farsight Enclaves but it hasn’t worked to the extent that they would like. And I don’t think that they have plans to deal with the possibility of losing contact with their new colonies on the other side of the galaxy. What would happen if they reestablish contact after 100 years and find Tau with an entirely different and hostile culture?

I don’t think that the Tau have to worry about suffering from a betrayal from one of their auxiliaries. New lore from the 9th edition codex says that trillions of Tau live on Sa’cea Prime. A controlled society will led to efficient breeding and population organization. I can’t imagine how many Tau live on their homeworld if other worlds can support trillions. There’s no population loss forms betraying species and there won’t be any important figures going rogue. The Tau are always on top in their empire and they above all creatures, will follow the Greater Good.

New Warhammer Legends update for CSM:
All of the good options got moved there.
Why is GW like this?
Can't sell you new shit if the cool shit is still around.

But in all honesty expect more of this going forward. The CSM and SM lineups are the size of the other factions combined. It's literally only a matter of time before they start compressing that shit down, like how various flavors of Terminator armor became "Relic Terminator Armor." Expect that to be compressed further in future editions, with it just being "Terminator Armor" with "Relic Terminator Armor" being an upgrade option.

We don't really know that. Humanity back then might have been controlled by AI, similar to the Leagues. But the trope that GW loves to use is how cyclic events are, empires rise and fall due to betrayals rather than internal threats: The Necron and eldar betrayed their gods, humanity is betrayed by Men of Iron and the traitor primarchs. The Tau are no different.

Plus they already have the farsight enclave, the high dependence on AI and probably some servant races that can do massive damage if they betray at the right time and the right place (I think it was hinted one of the reasons for the Imperium being Xenophobic is due to past betrayals by xenos).

Are there any BL books that cover the Iron Hands? I find myself in the mood to consume their fluff. Cyborg hate machines are suddenly surprisingly attractive.

For Heresy-era stuff there's not a lot, since they got their shit kicked in at Istvaan V, but there's Ferrus's entry in the Primarchs series, Veritas Ferrum, Damnation of Pythos, and the Shattered Legions anthology. In the "modern" era, you have Iron Hands, Wrath of Iron, Medusan Wings, The Eye of Medusa, and The Voice of Mars, along with sundry short stories and audio dramas.

I know that this thread is TECHNICLLY just 40k now, but there is no dedicated Warhammer fantasy chat(Unless I'm more retarded than I thought and missed it) so I figure I'll post it here:
Having a good time running a Second edition Fantasy roleplay game. It's a fun system that really lets you flesh our the char's journey's through their careers. The game itself is a Warriors of Chaos Game, Pc's members of a Warband led by an up-and-coming Chaos Champion on a quest for the God's attention. So far they've Burned down a Kislevite Fort, fought hordes of darksouls and spawn, fought khornate Orcs, raided villages, got their asses handed to them when they challenged a Chaos Lord, fought a troll and skaven at the same time and even crushed a Brayherd lead by a Tzanbull. The funny thing is, they've handled most of the challenges pretty well. Even through all I've thrown at them they've done well and adapted.
What I thrown at them now though I believe will be their greatest challenge, which already has nearly claimed the life of one of the more tenacious players:

Not a full story, but the first omnibus of Hammer and Bolter has one of my favourite 40K short stories and it features the Iron Hands. It's not anything especially unique, but it really embodies the setting without going full grimderp.

Oh god, I'm dumb. If I can't decide what Space Marine Chapter I wanna go with, there's a stupidly easy solution.

Just go with all of them, of course.

If I was forced to pick marines as my army I'd run iron hands because they seem to focus a lot on vehicles and tanks so maybe I could run them like guard but that just shows I really would just want guard

Aside from price of entry I think painting is genuinely the 2nd biggest hurdle to actually getting into 40k for me

You're in luck. They sell ready-to-slap paint that pools in recesses and glazes over flat surfaces, drastically reducing painting time per miniature.
Also you are surrounded by people who can give you advice and pointers on what to do and how to do it.
